12.1 Making care better for women and families

This week we are looking at two important reports: the new MBRRACE-UK Perinatal Confidential Enquiry, and the Sands Listening Project. Both reports focus on the experiences of Black and Asian women and their parents of loss after a stillbirth or neonatal death. Benash Nazmeen, Assistant Professor in Midwifery, Bradford University, and member of the Enquiry stakeholder group, will explore the MBRRACE report and its implication for midwifery practice. The report compares care reviews for Black and Asian women who have experienced a still birth or neonatal death in comparison to their white counterparts (Draper et al 2023). Dr Julia Clark, Research Officer from Sands, will share findings from The Sands Listening project, which focusses on the experiences of Black and Asian bereaved parents. This key report, released at the same time as the MBRRACE confidential enquiry, has crucial messages for midwives and the multidisciplinary team. It identifies care that works well, as well as highlighting barriers, biases, and poor care, which might be contributing to ethnicity-related inequalities in baby deaths in the UK.
