Today, Bishop Rodgers teaches from Matthew 15:1-9 on the topic "The Truth About Traditions." The Pharisees and false teachers were guilty of legalism. They substituted outward acts, words or rules as a sign of their belief. Legalism is restating what they believe are righteous regulations without the proper motives. Righteousness without relationship with God leads to religious ritual. Willing obedience leads us to an intimate relationship with Christ. Many times people are quick to obey traditions in order to please people and to gain status. However, our goal should be to please God. Tradition deals with ritual, while God's truth deals with reality. It is very dangerous to revere man-made traditions above the Word of God. Traditions should help us understand God's laws better, not become laws themselves.
