On December 24, 1914, during the first Christmas of World War I, an extraordinary and unprecedented event unfolded along the Western Front: the Christmas Truce. In the muddy, desolate trenches stretching across Belgium, British and German soldiers spontaneously ceased hostilities and engaged in a remarkable display of humanity that would become legendary. As darkness fell on Christmas Eve, German troops began decorating their trenches with candles and Christmas trees. Soon, they started singing "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night), which British soldiers recognized and responded to by singing "Silent Night" in English. Subsequent Christmases during the war saw strict orders preventing such fraternization.
