Hey there from CNN, I'm Chris Aboe with five things you need to know for Wednesday, August 21st. The U.S. job market isn't as strong as we initially thought. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a new annual revision of jobs data this morning, and the report says there were 818,000 fewer jobs in March of this year than were initially reported.
Today's revision is preliminary, so it won't change the existing employment data for now, but it's another critical gauge for the overall health of the U.S. labor market. Job growth has dropped off in recent months, making it more likely than not for the Federal Reserve to start cutting interest rates next month. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will make it official tonight and accept the nomination for vice president on the Democratic ticket at the Democratic National Convention.
CNN's Eva McKend breaks down what else to expect on day three from Chicago. Several high profile Democrats set to address the convention tonight, representing different generations of Democratic leadership, including rising star transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg in his early 40s. He's known for his ability to rip apart Republican messaging, and he ran for president himself in 2020. We'll also hear from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former President Bill Clinton, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Vice President Harris is finally, who has faced ceaseless attacks from Republicans. He will have a chance to introduce himself to America. Republican Vice Presidential Candidate J.D. Vance told Fox News he has some feedback for Democrats after day two of the DNC.
When you have Barack Obama, the former Democratic President of the United States, sitting there and making his big speech, and Kamala Harris is 90 miles away, I think it suggests that their party's not especially unified. A campaign official told CNN that Harris watched part of the speeches from Marine 2 while traveling back to Chicago from a campaign rally in Milwaukee. Vance also argued Democrats have been focused more on tearing into former President Donald Trump than laying out their plans for America. They talked about Trump more than they talked about inflation, more than they talked about their foreign policy achievements, more than they talked about the economy.
Trump and Vance will be campaigning together in North Carolina this afternoon, with a focus on national security. The joint rally is part of a series of events this week in battleground states. Moscow's mayor says Keith's military forces launched one of their largest drone attacks on Russia's capital overnight. As Ukraine's incursion into Russia's Kursk region intensifies, Moscow says its air defense systems destroyed 11 drones over the capital, which is about 280 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Russian authorities said they destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones in all. Authorities in the border regions are urging residents to refrain from using dating apps and limit their social media activity to prevent Ukrainian forces from gathering intelligence. Meanwhile, Russia's trying to project a business-as-usual posture, with its ally China's No. 2 leader visiting Moscow today, to hold talks on cooperation between the two countries, according to Russian state media.
Coming up, hurricane season could take a breather after Ernesto, but not for long. The Climate Prediction Center is setting forth its forecast for the rest of the hurricane season after Ernesto. CNN's Eric Zirko breaks it down. So Krista, the next week or so should be storm-free in the Atlantic Ocean, but we're actually just getting started.
We're just now entering the historically most active few weeks of the season, and forecasters think that it could get busy again the last week of August into the start of September. They say storms are most likely in a vast area from Puerto Rico east to the Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of western Africa. This area's where most consequential storms usually form during hurricane season. All right, that's all for now.
