12-Year-Old Engineer Finds Fires Faster

from News For Kids · host ICRT

12-Year-Old Engineer Finds Fires Faster Engineering is about inventing things. Thanks to engineers, we have all kinds of inventions: trains, computers, ovens, radios, light bulbs…! There's a contest in the USA. It's for middle school students who love science, technology, engineering, and math. This year's winner is Shanya Gill. She's a 12-year-old engineer! Shanya won 25,000 US dollars. That's about 800,000 Taiwan dollars! A restaurant by Shanya's house had a big fire. Nobody was hurt. But it gave Shanya a great idea… Most fire alarms find smoke in the air. Then these smoke alarms make a very loud sound. People know there's danger after a fire starts. Shanya's fire alarm has a special camera. The camera sees heat. People know there's danger before a fire starts. Shanya says her fire alarm is faster, cheaper, and better than smoke alarms. And she's making it better! Shanya's invention can save lives, houses, and more. Bravo, Engineer Shanya! ________________________________________ Vocabulary 12歲的女孩,發明了可以拯救性命的預防火災裝置。 1. invent 發明 I wish a robot could do grocery shopping for me. It's already been invented. It's called "delivery service". I wish the robot could cook for me. For that you can call a restaurant. I also wish I had talking glasses. Now why do you want your glasses to talk? To tell me where they are. Your glasses are right there by the alarm clock. What would I do without you? invent發明 restaurant餐廳 why為什麼 alarm警報 ________________________________________ Quiz 1. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
