These prayers and melodies were offered to the deities to wish for bountiful harvests, safe voyages, and overall protection. The Ryukyu Kingdom collected and compiled these sacred chants into the *Omoro Soshi*, which is recognized as the oldest collection of songs from the Ryukyu archipelago. While the music nurtured as court performing arts during the Ryukyu Kingdom era is now known as Ryukyuan Classical Music (*Ryukyu Koten Ongaku*), it was the everyday people who brought these melodies outside Shuri Castle, evolving them into vibrant folk songs (*Min'yo*) used for social gatherings and play.
