120 ~ Diagnosed With Leukaemia Straight After Giving Birth: Emma Godfrey’s Story of Survival

I sit down with Emma Godfrey to share her extraordinary story of motherhood, survival, and resilience.Emma was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APML) the day after giving birth to her second daughter, a moment that should have been filled with newborn bliss, but instead became a fight for her life. As Emma navigated intensive cancer treatment while adjusting to life as a new mum, her journey took another devastating turn when she went into kidney failure. While she is now thankfully in remission from her leukaemia, Emma is living with chronic kidney disease and facing the reality of needing a kidney transplant once she reaches a certain remission milestone.In this episode, Emma speaks honestly about the shock of diagnosis, and the physical and emotional toll of treatment. She opens up about the heartbreak of being separated from her newborn, the guilt and grief that can come with being unwell as a mother, and the darkest moments that tested her strength. We explore how kidney failure changed her day to day life, her relationships, and her sense of self and what it looks like to rebuild hope after everything you thought your life would be is turned upside down.Emma also shares the coping strategies that carried her through the unbearable days, the role her partner, family, and friends played in her survival, and what she wishes more people understood about cancer and chronic illness when you’re raising young children.
