#120. If It Wasn't Sugar, It Was Butterscotch. w/ Shemita Chaney

from The Joey Licea Podcast · host Joey Licea

This week I conducted a podcast interview with Shemita Chaney, known by her stage name "Sweet Meat," to discuss her life journey from growing up in Compton, California to living in Bakersfield, and her career in comedy. Shemita shared her challenging experiences growing up in Compton during the 1980s, including witnessing police brutality and violence, which led to her family moving to Bakersfield when she was 19 years old to escape the drug and gang problems. She discussed her 26-year marriage and four children, her career at Sam's Club (where I met her) and her transition to working as a bus driver for Golden Empire Transit before eventually leaving due to an assault incident. Shemita also detailed her comedy career, which began in 2018, including performing at the Fox Theater and her experiences performing at various venues and events, while emphasizing how her experiences both professionally and personally provide rich material for her stand-up comedy.
