The study reveals that two distinct dopamine receptors in the OFC serve as independent functional gates: D1 receptors manage anxiety and depression, while D2 receptors control pain relief. Specifically, the OFC-LDTg circuit was found to mediate emotional stability, whereas the OFC-BLA circuit specifically modulates physical pain thresholds. These findings suggest that targeting receptor-specific pathways within the mesocortical system could lead to more precise treatments for patients suffering from comorbid pain and mental health conditions.
