Research published in Nature Cell Biology reveals that cellular senescence occurs much faster than previously understood, appearing within minutes to hours of a skin injury. This rapid-onset senescence is a transcription-independent process that utilizes pre-existing Cdkn1a mRNA to quickly produce p21 protein, leading to immediate cell-cycle arrest. These specialized cells promote tissue repair and re-epithelialization by secreting pro-inflammatory and pro-migratory factors, such as epigen (EPGN). Located at the leading edge of a wound, these senescent cells are essential for efficient regeneration and healing. Experimental suppression of this early response significantly impairs the body's ability to close wounds, highlighting its functional importance.
