What's that? Get on with it? That's right. Whoa, I thought it was a voice, but it's but actual finger-tarking par.
What's that finger? Magic finger? Cracker-tower? I think that's how you pronounce it.
And I'm pretty sure that I'm out. What's that? No, I have no idea I was going to edit around this, but you know what? It's not my problem, but it's not yours, Magic finger.
Normal service has been resumed. LAUGHTER In this episode, we're whipping out our rhythm sticks with a musical, Voyage of the Rock Aliens, from 1984. My name's Colin. And come on, let's get wet.
I'm already wet, Colin. Are you? I am. Yeah, I live in a state of wetness, did you know how?
That's not good. That's how you get trench-fucked. Stay in wetness, is that any Florida? It is, it's just off the coast.
No, I don't know. My name's Colin. I don't want it to become a nun or a bomber pilot. Oh, what pilot?
A bomber pilot. Oh, right, I was just clarifying. OK. It's a bit fine.
Only if I had too many chilis. And, Paul, that's not a bomber. Yeah, hurricane, right? Nope, that's not a bomber either.
That's a fighter. You're doing all right. Come on, let's go for all the planes. Flying goose?
What's one of those, isn't it? It's not a bomber. Is it not? No, it's pretty squish.
No. The big carrot? I don't know. The big carrot?
Where are you getting your planes from? I can eat. No, no, I'm just thinking off the top of my head. Well, give me a bomber.
Wellington? Oh, OK. I'll take it. You could be lined to me.
You could be making it up. B-52. Oh, I knew that one. Yes.
I should have said that one. Lancaster? Yeah, I know that one as well, no. Manchester?
I wasn't familiar with that one. But the Lancaster and the B-52, I was aware of, yes. OK. D&DB, sorry.
I'm not. It's a solo show. I'm on my own. It's just me, what about a thing?
I miss a week. I miss an episode. And I'm just too much. You've got to do it all.
My name's Paul. I'll do it, Paul. I'll do it. I'll just go, shall I?
My name's Paul. I'm an asshole. Go on. My name's Paul.
And this could be a very lossful degenerative and dirty mission. I'm amazed you got the word degenerative. I can't say it. I couldn't even drink it.
I know you did. I'll practice it. I'm proud of myself. I'm proud of myself.
Good. D&DB says aliens land in a mythical town of Spielberg, USA, searching for the source of rock and roll, where they find the gang of teenagers led by Dee Dee and Frankie, along with Frankie's Posse, The Pack, the leader of the aliens, take a shine to Dee Dee, and all sorts of trouble breaks out. But why does it? Yeah.
Yeah. All sorts of trouble breaks out, so many of them are comedy and excuse. It usually doesn't though, does it? When you have to say that?
No, there are some funny lines here and there. There are some good moments. One or two. Cast includes Piazzadara as Dee Dee Dee, Craig, Shefa as Frankie, Tom Nolan as Absid, Ruth Gardener as Sheriff, Michael Berryman as Chinsor, Alison the Placker as Diane and Peter Colin as the voice of Robot 1, 3, 5, 9.
Is that VP to Colin? It is the voice of Audubots, Rolle! Yeah, I didn't realise that. Yeah, it is.
He's got a high pitched squeaky voice in this, doesn't he? I suppose he has. It's definitely not an optimist prime point. No, it's not a Samwick-Wickie voice, is it?
No, what were you doing then? Samwick-Wickie, that's what he says, isn't it? What does he say like that? What do you kind of say Samwick-Wickie?
Ooh, that's right, isn't it? Is that the voice you use on a telephone? Yes. So I answer the phone at work.
Is it? Yes. So in case you actually do something, you can turn Paul's out. Optum is Prime's name, Paul's out.
The director in this, James Fargo, he also directed every week but loose at the end for Sir, and he was Assistant Director on the Outlaw and Josie Wells. But I'm sure that this is his proudest moment. I'm sure that's quite a random selection of films, ignoring that Clint Eastwood is in a large number of them, but the actual genre and type is very different. Especially when you add this to the mix as well.
Yeah. It's a musical, technically. Which one? This.
I don't remember the Yurangutan in there. Which way will loose? First it out in song? Oh, that would be something, wouldn't it?
Well, instead of singing. I'm musical apes. When you might know? Not really.
I mean, okay, maybe because I like the monkeys. God, you do your info and I'll pick up the pieces afterwards. So this was originally conceived as a spoof of B-Movies. The idea was that it would be like you switching channels from one of those 60s beach movies to a sci-fi movie to a horror movie.
You know, you were just flipping through and keep flipping back. And that's what this film is supposed to represent, which explains a lot. I get it. And it's a neat idea.
It doesn't quite work in practice, though, does it? I can see what that is, what they're trying to do. Yeah. Outside scenes were shutting down for burn at Georgia.
And in the outside scenes, many of the extras were just local people from the town, including the volunteer fight department. No, that's nice. Is that in case, you know, Piyosadora kind of hot. Yeah.
Yeah. You want to say that? I mean, he's a good looking guy. Actually, a little side though, when I was watching this for the podcast, my wife came down the stairs and saw what I was watching and said, um, I cranked you.
I was watching this for the podcast. My wife came down the stairs and saw what I was watching and said, um, I cranked you for it. It was far too pretty to be a man. I don't know where to go with that.
Well, I thought maybe you might say, well, you know, people say that about me, don't they? Right? Um, they do say that they are amazed that you're a man. Yes.
I agree with that bit. I'll take it. I'm not sure it's because you're considered, I can't even say the word without the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the beautiful. I'm not sure that's the reason.
I thought you wanted to be a Riggs B then. I was going for Bruce Fossa. Oh, yeah. Very close.
Very close. Thanks. Yeah. I might be considered pretty in some circles.
Some planets. You know, those recent supposed aliens they found, those mummified, but they'd like you. Well, there's real little shriveled things that they found. Mm hmm.
Yeah. They probably think you're attractive. I'll take it. You know me.
Yeah. I do. No, no shriveled alien is saying, I don't know if I like that. I'm like a capsule for that.
Who's going to a council? You're aliens. Yeah. You never know these days.
Anything can happen. It's true. Carry on. Should we talk about the, I want, it's kind of information, but it also affects the opening because Piers de Dora and Jimin Jackson headed to Italy, aboard Sedera's private jet.
Okay. To shoot a music video for the duet when the rain begins to fall. And then this video has absolutely nothing to do with the film with a different cast and crew and everything. And then they were going to tack in on to the end of the film, but then they made it the opening of the film.
I think it fits better in the way that they do it. We'll talk about it one week, one week, one week, one week, one week into the movie, but I think it works better at the beginning than at the end. Because at least there's a reason for it. Yeah, we might be in a closing credits thing.
It's a bit involved for a closing credits thing, isn't it? Well, it wasn't originally intended to be in the film. Anyway, it was a pop video. I don't remember Piers de Dora being that huge to have a personal jet and be performing with Jeraine Jackson and doing music videos in different countries and stuff.
Like, she totally escaped my... Yeah. Maybe she wasn't in this, where we were, where we were in the UK at that time. Maybe she wasn't big and wiggin'.
Is that what you say? Possibly not. I mean, her last. Absolutely.
Yeah. It is a weird one. At least if you stick it at the beginning of the movie, it's... I mean, I'll get what you're saying.
You stick it over the end credits, but in a way, you stick it at the beginning of the movie. People might not leave. If you stick it at the beginning of the movie, people might not leave. Yeah, because it's the best looking bit of the movie, isn't it?
Oh, I see what you're saying. Okay. You stick it at the end. People might have already left.
I missed it. Yeah. All right. The bass player of the band in the movie.
Is he called Ray Mat? Is that him? I've got with that. I like it.
He was a Bobby Friedman, and he didn't appear in the movie in the end because apparently his screen tested really, really badly. Tom Nohlen was brought in as they wanted a real actor to play the role. How bad do you have to be to fail the screen test for this film? It must have been pretty bad, eh?
Maybe it was the opposite. Maybe it was just too good. You're too good for Voyager, the Rockavians. I suppose, yes.
I mean, you wouldn't get Larry Olivier, would you? No. You would be interested in it. It would be, yeah.
You almost appeared in a Doctor Who episode. I'm pretty sure he was an actor who did work for Cash. Yeah, definitely. Definitely.
very limited theatrical release in America and Europe and then it was released directly onto TV in Canada. Just Canada. Just Canada. What did they do to deserve it?
Yeah, they suffered enough. Pretty much. Craig, Sheffern, Tom Nolan had to lip-sync the musical numbers as they were the high-f Fader acting ability, not the singing ability. It must be said though, something must have taken for Nolan because he actually went on and started his own music career on the back of this.
Oh, so did he take singing lessons after this? I guess so, yeah. Thank you. Start a band.
Inspired by this film. Well, what were you inspired to do by this film? I took a dump. The bands, is it rhyme, rain, rain, rain, whatever they call it?
And the other band in it, Jimmy and the Mustangs. They had to have two months of acting classes to prefer for this film. I still think it would have been easy to get actors who could sing. I mean, it wouldn't be hard to find.
This is like teaching a aisle rig workers to be astronauts. It is. It is a little bit like that, isn't it? He must have done a good job though, this guy, because he ended up playing the role of the Deputy Sheriff.
So they gave him a part in the movie. Nice. Do you know what Ring was stands for? No, go on.
It stands for Rebel, Heretics, Electronic Music Alliance. Nice. I like it. But they don't ever mention it in the film.
No, no, it's back story. Back story, of course. Did you know that one of the songs in this movie let's dance tonight was covered by David Hasselhoff on his 1990 album Crazy for You? Oh, you know what?
I'm going to be doing after we've done this part. Taking a dump. Yeah, definitely going to listen to that. I'll put that on our Spotify playlist along with some of the other songs from this.
Yeah, you do that. That would be good. Yeah. Apparently it's a James Salfop for his first scene, Craig Shiffa went into the woods and repeatedly hit himself on the back with a large stick.
Um, trying to figure out how that would help. It's a bit much for this kind of role, don't you think? Well, it's not even connected to the role, because he wouldn't hit himself in the film. I think he's trying to make himself mean and moody, you know?
By smacking himself. Good try acting. Well, yeah, I don't think the crew were that impressed with it though, because they tried to get him replaced. But who were they going to replace him with?
Anyone that wasn't hit themselves with a big stick, I would imagine. And just leave a large number of people. Yeah, he does. We could have done it.
Yeah, good. All right. I am passionate of some stick bashing. He's like, I can imagine that if you're like, Oh, we're going to get rid of him.
Who we got now. Oh, look, this guy, Eric Stoltz, apparently easy to work with. The filming, this is this is quite a delicate subject. This little fact.
It's not about your cream again. It's not about my cream, no. It is about bodily fluids though. So during the segment of the nature of the beast, you know, that great moment in the movie.
Yeah. You talk about it. One of the dancers was having her period at the time. And she won't discuss this.
Yeah, it's fine. It's fine. And they had to postpone it because the cougar could smell the blood and was getting rather excited. And you're not talking about Pia Sudara, right?
When you know that's so she's not in that bit. No, no, no. When you say cougar, that's not what Pia Sudara, right? It's talking about 20s in this movie.
I know. Jock doesn't work at all. It's just nasty. She'll be ashamed of herself.
I am. I really am. I must have been dangerous. Surely ringing the dinner bell every day for the cougar.
Yeah, maybe. I don't know. Has it trained? Strained, I know.
Since I've right. It's probably on strike now. Well, it's dead now. If it wasn't there to be on strike.
Oh, could you imagine it? It's nothing I'm going to pick it on the placard. Yeah, next to the cat from human. You wouldn't create a fucking tree, don't you?
No, that's true. What's it going to be? I've all the shady ones. Exactly.
There was actually an idea to spin this alien band off into their own cartoon, Saturday morning series. Yeah, I can see that. So can I? The camera here is taking that.
We'll talk about it. Apparently the rise were constantly revising the script during shooting, really? I mean, there's two words in there that are just amazing. Writers and script.
Well, with our mind, shall we get on with it? Yes, let's go for it. We open with a guitar shaped spaceship and there's a robot 15159. It's 1359.
I promoted him slightly. It's a different one. You did a good job. Yeah.
Robot 1399 is in charge and is finding a planet for the source of rock and roll. And he's one of those sarcastic, know-it-all robots. It reminded me, for some reason, of the robots in Terahawks. Even though it doesn't really look like one, but there was an attitude about it.
Yeah, I get what you mean. I get what you mean. Yeah. He's kind of like if you melded it out to D2 and C3BO into one robot, isn't he?
Ah, he got the shape, but you've got the sarcasm. Yeah. Obviously, you're a guy. Right.
After this Ganton number of planets, the robot chooses one called Akiremma. And then- You say so. We get a pop video that has absolutely nothing to do with the film that we discussed earlier. Yeah.
So they've used some planets on a view screen, doesn't it? And this is the germane Jackson Piazzadora number, isn't it? Yes. And it's called- When the rain begins to fall.
What do you think of this? I think you can clearly see that the production value is better on this than the rest of the movie, aren't they? Yeah, I mean, it's okay. It's just a pop video.
Yeah, because it's got bikers wearing what looked like Nuns habits on their heads. I do. It does have a feeling of blue Peter about it. They've just put it all together with whatever items they found in the kitchen.
Which strangely, it still looks like it costs more than the rest of the movie. Yes. It's all right. It's a nice little ditty.
Yeah, it's a good track. To be honest with you, I mean, I would have preferred if the whole movie was this. Just Piazzadora dancing and singing. Well, we get that kind of anyway, don't we?
But I mean, like this kind of weird futuristic on a budget Mad Max 80s thing that's going on here. Right. Been a good movie. Yeah.
Yeah, I agree. And that was a big thing in the 80s, those kind of movies. That's true. And there's never been a musical version of it.
Ooh, that's a not really. No musical Mad Max. No, not yet. There we go.
Put it to the list. Oh, yeah. I've added this bit out. It's just and the whole whole thing's about seeking gasoline.
That's right. Yeah. Look at me and I'm kind of mean. Because I'm seeking gasoline.
Right itself. Well, my life is based on the turn of a curd. I pushed my pedal really hard. Yeah, we could do this part.
Really hard. Really hard. You have a whole number of sense. Dondedome.
You could? Yeah. Yeah. You're just overblown in the thunderdome.
In the thunderdome. I like it. Did he go? Come on.
Oh, he's got it. He's on it. Oh, he's on it. Yeah, yeah, we're done.
Do you think the production on this movie, they shot for Michael and then worked their way down the Jackson's until they got one that would do it? No, I think they started at the bottom and worked their way up on a surprise when they got Jermaine. Who's at the bottom there? That, that, that president.
Billy Jackson. What's his name? Billy Jackson. I don't know.
I'm glad I'm not only Jermamas. I'm very hazy on Jackson. No, Jermoy. Bombers.
Oh, I did that guy. I know. I'm doing it again. Never say we don't recycle.
We're good for the environment. And Paul, let's be honest. Was it a joke? Well, yeah, yeah, yeah.
We're loosely, you know, we, you know, we'd like to play fast and loose with the definition of joke, don't we? We do, yes. It's difficult for guys to look tough in like skin type white trousers and an unshabit on your head, isn't it? Don't be so hurting yourself.
I think you're pulling it off nicely. I'm going for it. You know, I'm doing my best. Oh, yeah.
And you look tough. Very cool. Thank you. Thank you.
I'm guessing that with the fight scene that they were aiming for a kind of West Side Story vibe. Yes. Yes. Romeo and Juliet, which is, you know, it's dance fighting, isn't it?
It is. Yes, which is the best kind of fighting. Is that the worst kind of dancing? Oddly.
So, so that bit ends. Just ends. That's the best way to describe it. That's just ends.
And the robot does a multi-piphon fingering, basically goes, nah, this is silly place. It does. It does. Yeah.
He's got the robot as well. I wish you'd say he's got kind of a kind of a dusty bin vibe to him, isn't he? You're going to have to explain what dusty bin is to our younger listeners. Dusty bin was a dust bin that had a face and arms and legs and was remote control and was the mascot on a TV show, game show in the 80s, called 321.
That's right. And that, well, he used to twiddle his fingers and pretend he was doing 321 really fast. Do you know when I was a kid, I used to think they got that bin. Like that.
Like, you know, because they used to, if they didn't win the main prizes or prizes, they would win dusty bin. Yeah. I used to think, and I was always like, well, I'd rather win dusty bin. It's cool.
Look at it's a bin with them, the legs and a face. Yeah. That on a Wednesday. That would be fun in the street.
You drive around the street going, where's all these dusty bins? People are winning. Well, they just gave them a bog-standard black bin, didn't they? Yep.
Yeah, apparently. Yeah. Disappointing. It just goes to show you Cantros TV game shows.
You can't, you can't. You can't. So we, as I said, we cut back to the ship and then the rest of the movie starts. Yes, finally, because it chooses Earth, right?
It chooses Earth. And apparently the robot keeps the crew as little freeze-dried action figures in a fridge. Yes, that's how they travel to Vastis that there's a space. Should have done that, I mean, shouldn't they?
Yeah, that would have been, well, it could manage a bit of the heads off. But let's not give you a lot more skydiers of space travel. No, no, no. These little action figures, they look better than they have any round to be, considering that they're in the movie for like three seconds.
They look better than if they've ever made action figures of these action figures of people in the film. They do. They do. The production value of the interior of the spaceship gives early Doctor Who a bit of a run for its money, doesn't it?
It looks like it's cobbled together from whatever bits they could find later on, doesn't it? Yeah, well, it doesn't help that it's got musical instruments and keyboards as part of the flight deck. And there's a battle zone game that wants playing at one point. Yeah, rock aliens, I've got them.
No, the human. No, the rock aliens, it's in the time. No, the human. They're not made from rock.
The rock. Oh. Hello, is this up? I don't know, is it?
Unfortunately. Should say as well that you kind of glossed over it, but it was a good nice shot at the opening of the, you kind of a star destroyer shot of the guitar shaped spaceship flying over the top of the camera. Were you watching for you to the rock aliens? Yeah, looks alright.
And then he smashed it through the tiles. Yeah, fantastic. It's a bit like seven. It dreams of being Blake seven.
You think? I know. And the songs come a bit thick and fast, don't they, in this film? Because we get another song, 21st Century, not one of my favourites.
No, no, not a banger. Not a banger. To be honest with you, any time the aliens are on screen singing, I kind of check out a bit. Wow, you don't like the, so it's interesting that the rock aliens who are obviously in body run are the worst ones that sing in rock.
They do it because the Jimmy and the Mustangs are more rocky than they are. Yeah. It's a paradox. Is it?
I don't know. I just say words. I said that. I said words Colin.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's just. So we cut to earth and it's a beach party going on and there's all sorts of things happening here. We've got toxic waste monster.
We've got singing. We've got snogging. Yeah. Everything you need for a good party.
Yeah, it looks a good place. I can go there. Would you? Well, you always like toxic waste.
It's your favourite environment, right? That's why I like doing a podcast. I don't know what that means. What do you mean?
You've seen this toxic waste? We're polluting the earth waves. Something like that. And we get another song, Real Love.
Do you like this one? Yeah? Do you want this? So it's a pewzer door at one.
Thoughts? I can't figure out, I'm assuming she wasn't singing live because it seems drugged. And it doesn't seem to be dubbed that well. But obviously she can sing.
She had a singing career. Acting wise, yeah, I'm not totally sold. She's a rare but nice lady. So do I.
I'd agree with all that. I do think that she gives you a nice appreciation of how good and amateur can be at something. Wait, look at me when you say that. Wait, the only one here?
Who was the lookout? No, I've got two. Dave. You know, she has a permanent residency in Vegas, I think.
There's so many people seem to have a permanent residency in Vegas. Is it just like an old folks home? I guess so. You know that old.
He's a little bit older. No, I'm just finding that everyone seems to have a permanent residency. I'll wait for you to do yours. Oh, that'd be amazing Colin.
I would just sing and dance and do magic as well. You disappear, hopefully. I'd be lying, Taimin. Yeah.
Would you? Oh yeah. I'd be the whole shebang as I say. The whole shebang, right?
Yeah. So do magic. Would you do a few songs? Do some songs, I'd do some dancing.
Dance? No, but I'd still do it. You still do? Yeah, game for anything, right?
Yeah, I'd get me magic box out. I hope that's not a euphemin. Most magicians would have a hat but I'd have a box. You could fit more rabbits in it, can't you?
Really? You'd be too busy playing the slots. The what? Slots?
All right. He's Vegas. I hear there's a lot of slots in Vegas. There is a lot of one-hand bandits.
That's right. Yeah. That's why they never filled the fugitive though. Too many one-hand bandits.
It was a big chase battle. But was it one-hand bandit? What? One-hand bandit?
Yeah, one-hand bandit. Yeah, I don't even use a bandit. No, I had to expect it was a Charles Wright. He didn't have a big hat on.
You know, handle that was. Oh, he did it. And then when you pull these points for like his mouth. His eyes rolled around.
So there's kind of a 50s mod going on with this. Yeah, that's what I mean. It's like, yeah, 56 days. You've got your sci-fi, you've got your beach party, movies because they were a big craze at one point.
Yeah. Yeah. Although it's kind of a mishmash of it, isn't it? Because you've got your 55 and it's also a lot of modern dress going on as well.
Because you couldn't really say that she's dressed in a 50-style-ish thing. What period was this film supposed to be set in? I think it's one of those made up periods. Like Street Sophia or something.
Yeah. That kind of thing that's indeterminable. You've also got the sheriff who witnesses, oh, well, we should explain how the aliens land on Earth. In a phone booth.
So they choose a phone booth because it's inconspicuous, right? Mm-hmm. Don't they make it slightly conspicuous by having roaring jet fire coming from the bottom of it as it lands? So you're looking for logic in a movie called Voyage of the Rock aliens, Colin?
Yeah. Shouldn't be doing that, should I? That way lies madness. Right.
Oh, favorite band. Your favorite band? Everyone's favorite band who's got a fun sense of themselves in enjoyment of life. All right.
Stay on. So the sheriff's season for her telescope, because she's like into space and looking at stuff. She's one of those season land. Is she spying on a man getting undressed?
I think that's just in your head. No, no, no, I'm pretty sure she was spying on a man. Yeah, yeah. I was trying to be nice to bathroom, so she was interested in astronomy.
I'm sure she was. Well, she was, because she liked to see a full moon. Craters? No, it's just the way I walk.
So Frankie shows up at the beach as well, and this is a play by Crater. And he's kind of like a leather clad douchebag, isn't he? Exactly, not just like he is. He is.
And we find out, I don't quite, this is one thing I don't understand. One thing, okay. He doesn't want, yeah, yeah, yeah, the two. I forgot this one.
He doesn't want Dee Dee to sing in his band, right? Why not? Is it ever explained why? I think it's because it's all men.
Men. Oh, it's just a male band? Men, men together. That's weird.
I mean, like, if you had, if you had, she said, oh, you want her to sing in your band, right? She's gorgeous. She's fun to be with, and she can sing. You want her in your band?
Yeah, I agree completely, but Frankie's kind of, he's very vain, isn't he? And he doesn't want anything to take the limelight away from him, I don't think. Ah, so that's why. That's what I'm going for.
Yeah. All right. So Dee Dee and Frankie are an item, right? But she's not happy because he spends most of his time with the pack, his guys.
Yeah. Yeah. I'm pretty sure he spends more time with his first ray than anyone else. Because he probably does.
He's not a problem. You are, right? I did have the problem. But who's just what killed it?
Is it her spray killed? You heard? Very bad. And the robot turns into a fire hydrant.
Yes, because the robot turns into different things, depending on what planet they're on apparently, and complains that he's the one who always has to change. It's, um, it looks better as a fire hydrant than it did as the robot in the spaceship. Oh, you're not attracted to it when it's a robot? No, no, but fire hydrant.
Fire hydrant, yeah. Yeah. And they steal some clothes from some teenagers. Yes, they do.
And then we get another song in the diner, Justine. I thought this was a fun 50s rock and roll number. Yeah, it's a lot of rock and billy going on. You like a bit of rock and billy, don't you?
Who doesn't? A bit of gel, a bit of real cream in your hair. That's good to say. I don't think I've ever used real cream.
You got, you... I do sometimes spot it quick. I don't see it. Okay, try to make it happen now.
No, it's just that. Can't help it. It just happens when you got long, luscious locks. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That was luscious, as it used to be covered. All right. I told you, I told you for stair-ground bath, I'm just having a transplant just doing no, yeah. You're going to go for a Leylton.
