128 Should Teachers Be Forced to Pay Union Dues? – David Schmus

Would you donate to a cause that you don’t believe in? What if you were forced to support a cause because you were part of a certain organization? If you are a teacher, you are likely a member of a union. Even if you’re not in a union, you generally still have to pay dues to a union. If you are a conservative and/or a Christian, your dues are likely being used for causes you do not support. But, there is a Supreme Court case that may soon change that. Today on Educate for Life, Kevin will speak with David Schmus. David has been involved in public schools for over 15 years, both as a high school AP US History/Government teacher and as a Christian Club adviser. He has been repeatedly honored as Most Inspirational Teacher. David and his wife Elizabeth have been married since 1992 and have 3 daughters. He holds an M.A. in Biblical Studies and Theology from Biola University, taught Biblical Worldview classes as an adjunct professor for 14 years, and was recently a featured speaker for the Talbot School of Theology Chapel Series. Now on staff full-time with CEAI as Executive Director, David is passionate about coming alongside Christian educators to provide them with resources and encouragement to enable them to walk out their calling. David will also talk about Janus v. AFSCME, a Supreme Court case concerned with freeing public school educators from forced unionism. Many expect the case will be resolved in favor of Mark Janus when the ruling is announced in June. If the court does rule favorably, public employees will have the option to join a union, another professional association like CEAI, or nothing at all. We encourage you to get the facts and pray about this important decision. It is important to note that CEAI is not anti-union, but are opposed to forced union membership. If you feel God is leading you to remain a member of your union, then do that. However, if you are a teacher and feel God is leading you to seek other options, then CEAI encourages you to allow them to serve you by becoming a member of their association.
