13. Cheryl Keller Capone- A Researcher's Perspective

from The Healthcare Education Transformation Podcast

On today's episode we welcome Dr. Cheryl Keller Capone Ph. D. on the show for a discussion regarding the path of the researcher. Cheryl discusses what's she's studying, her academic/research future, what tenure is, pros and cons of being a researcher, an insight into the day in the life of a researcher from her point of view, her tips for teaching in a classroom vs in a lab setting, and what she has found helpful from the patient perspective with education.    As a Research Associate and Project Manager in Dr. Ross Hardison’s lab at Penn State, Cheryl has been involved in numerous projects with an overall research goal of understanding molecular mechanisms and gene regulation in mammals using hematopoiesis in mouse as a model system. Research questions are addressed using a variety of epigenomic assays and analyses to examine different genomic features. These include transcribed regions (RNA-seq), nuclease-accessible regions (DNase-seq, ATAC-seq), DNA bound by sequence-specific transcription factors (ChIP-seq), histone modifications (ChIP-seq), and chromatin interactions in three-dimensional space (HiC and CaptureC).  She has extensive technical experience in genomic technologies, methodologies and instrumentation, including massively parallel short read sequencing on Illumina platforms. Since 2010, she has been involved in generating and sequencing of over 1200 samples, and have performed over 120 sequencing runs on the GAIIX, HiSeq2000, MiSeq and NextSeq500. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She works with individuals on a part-time basis to help them meet their personal health and fitness goals & she enjoys helping people learn to move well and get strong!
