from Radio Pulpit · host Rocky Stevenson

: The Douay-Rheims Bible: Translation, Tradition, and the Sufficiency of Scripture In 1582, the Rheims New Testament emerged from exile, born out of a desperate need to counter the growing influence of the Protestant Reformation. Designed to arm English Catholics against the influence of the Geneva Bible, this controversial translation of the Latin Vulgate shaped English Catholic life for centuries. Yet, its story highlights a fundamental tension: does the Church stand over Scripture to define its meaning, or does Scripture stand over the Church to judge all tradition? In this episode of Memorable Monday with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we examine the fascinating history behind the Douay-Rheims project. From the "priest holes" of Elizabethan England to the smuggling routes used to transport this contraband, we trace the human cost of these competing visions for the Word of God. We look specifically at the linguistic battles over clarity and authority, contrasting the Latinized density of the Rheims text with the plain-English commitment of the Reformers. Using 2 Timothy | 3:16–17 and Acts | 17:11 as our guide, we explore why the sufficiency of Scripture remains the bedrock of a healthy church. Do we go back to the original languages to let God speak, or do we rely on filtered intermediaries? Join us as we weigh the Reformation's call for believers to examine the Scriptures daily for themselves. Reflect with us on the importance of holding to a complete, sufficient Word that equips the man of God for every good work. #ChurchHistory #Reformation #DouayRheims #SolaScriptura #BibleTranslation #Theology #2Timothy #Acts17 #ProtestantReformation #ScriptureAlone #BiblicalStudies #ChristianHistory #ChurchGovernance
