Designed to arm English Catholics against the influence of the Geneva Bible, this controversial translation of the Latin Vulgate shaped English Catholic life for centuries. Yet, its story highlights a fundamental tension: does the Church stand over Scripture to define its meaning, or does Scripture stand over the Church to judge all tradition?
