Nell'Ottocento il grande storico francese Michelet, e in Italia il nostro Carducci, descrissero in pagine straordinarie l'angoscia della folla nell'attesa della fine del mondo, e i pianti di gioia quando si scoprì che dopo tutto la vita continuava. Quando gli storici si accorsero che proprio a cavallo del Mille l'Europa medievale aveva conosciuto una svolta decisiva, uscendo dalla stagnazione dell'epoca barbarica per creare la straordinaria civiltà del basso Medioevo, parve ovvio collegare questa ripresa al benefico shock psicologico provocato dalla mancata fine del mondo. Ma davvero la gente dell'anno 999 sapeva in che anno viveva?
