13 - Self acceptance isn’t complacency

from Mindset Minutes · host Colm O'Reilly

Self acceptance isn’t complacency Self acceptance isn’t an excuse for not working on maximising your life and your potential. In fact it’s quite the opposite. When I left therapy after emergency suicide counselling, I found it hard to reconcile that I still needed to do work on myself even though I was no longer “code red”. I had to work on accepting that I wasn’t either broken and needed to fix myself or that was all okay and could go about my life. Accepting where you are, a perfectly imperfect being who is working on improving themselves while at the same time being worthy and valuable as you are, is empowering. The opposite is either blind denial of the areas you’d like to improve, or self loathing because you’re “flawed”, and therefore inadequate. Acceptance isn’t resignation to the fact that’s just who you are (and others have to deal with it!). It’s understanding all the parts that make up you and then consciously deciding which dials to turn up, turn down, or leave as they are.
