The idea behind this is related to the literal meaning of dawn. Dawn begins when the first Light begins to show over the horizon from the sunrise. Therefore, there is the least Light before dawn begins, because there is no sunlight at that point. That is also the longest point since last seeing Light. One beautiful aspect to be learned from the millennials is their belief in their entitlement to always question every previously accepted truth with, “Says who?!” I would suggest that the answer to this question concerning the quote about it always being darkest before dawn is G-d, in his answer to Moses on why it got worse for the Jewish people in Egypt, just before their redemption from Egypt began. The modern-day issue of this lecture is to understand this Universal Truth, its reason, and what we are to do when it gets darkest. This lecture is based primarily on a maamor the Rebbe delivered on this Shabbat, in 1969, exploring G-d’s answer to Moses, when Moses asked G-d (-Exodus 5:22-23), “O Lord! Why have You harmed this people? Why have You sent me? Since I have come to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has harmed this people, and You have not saved Your people."
