200 000 Soldaten standen sich am 18. Juni 1815 in der Nähe des belgischen Dörfchens Waterloo waffenstarrend gegenüber. Nur einen Nachmittag dauerte die Schlacht, doch sie entschied über das Schicksal des Kontinents und machte einen Hamburger zum Helden: Denn ohne Dr. Georg Hartog Gerson und seine 378 deutschen Kameraden von der "King's German Legion" hätte Napoleon den Sieg davongetragen. Beerdigt ist Gerson auf dem Jüdischen Friedhof in Ohlsdorf. Auf seinem Grabstein, der die Form eines Obelisken hat, steht dieser lateinische Spruch: "Mitissimus Aggressor - Acerrimus Defensor"- ein milder Angreifer, ein scharfer Verteidiger. Eine Aussage, die zum Verhalten des Mannes in der Schlacht von Waterloo passt. Denn obwohl fünf Mal so viele Franzosen anstürmten, hielten er und seine Getreuen Stunde um Stunde stand.
