132: How We Homeschool Through a Pandemic, Part 3

from Homeschool Unrefined · host Maren Goerss, Angela Sizer

We're back with another conversation covering our two pandemic check-in topics: The State of the Family (what's going on with everyone at home) and The Nitty Gritty (what we're ACTUALLY doing for homeschool). We talk about heightened emotions, anxiety, deschooling, struggling to get adequate self-care, and feeling like we're living in Groundhog Day. "Okay campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties cause its cold out there...its cold out there every day."   Highlights from this episode -It feels like Groundhog Day: Rhythms and routines are so helpful, but also every day is starting to feel the same. How can we try to make certain days distinct or special?   -Living with intensified emotions: We're living with immediate and long-term uncertainty, which is creating BIG feelings for all of us.   -Finding balance takes trial and error—and TIME: Some kids have too much to do, some kids don't have enough. We're still figuring out that "sweet spot" for everyone.   -Deschooling: With some of our kids being off schools and co-ops, we find ourselves doing some unexpected deschooling. More pjs, movies, and slow days as we adjust to life at home again.   -Self-care is not easy right now: Introverts are home, but with people all the time. Extroverts are with people all the time, but stuck at home. It's hard for EVERYONE right now.   -This doesn't have to be the time for your biggest personal growth. It's ok to do what's comfortable for you instead of trying new things, accomplishing big tasks, and pushing personal development.   -Easing up on expectations and being ADAPTABLE: Kids don't want to sit for read aloud this week? Ok. Need a later start to the day? Ok. Pairing read aloud with tv shows at night? Ok. We're making adjustments to accommodate the emotions and space we all need.   Mentions Groundhog Day Glennon Doyle's Family Meeting on Instagram Melissa Urban on Instagram The Popcast Dreambox Hopscotch Mark Rober on YouTube CNN 10 Calm   Life in the Pandemic: Marriage, Food, and Self-Care We're doing another LIVE recording of one of our monthly episodes for our $5 Squad!
