134. God Wants You To Stop Feeling So Bad About Yourself (Nehemiah 8)
from The Bible Uncut and Unfiltered · host Colin Connor
Nehemiah 8 might be the most misused chapter in the whole book. Old school Baptists I knew in college pointed to it to explain why you need a big wooden pulpit in church. (It doesn't say that.) Others use it to prove everyone has to stand for scripture reading. (Also not what it says.) It even contains one of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible, but almost nobody realizes it's from here. But here's why I actually love this chapter: it's the birth of sola scriptura... and also the proof that it's a myth. And then there's the real gut punch. The people felt so guilty over not knowing the Torah that they started sobbing, and the spiritual leaders had to tell them to stop crying.Turns out God's plan for revival isn't more guilt. It's a party. A big, inclusive, everyone's invited party. And the Bible scholars of Nehemiah's day said if you read the first five books of the Bible and walk away with anything less than that, you missed the point. That's definitely not the sermon you'll hear in church this week, but that is what's in the text. Let's talk about it!Website: TheBibleUncut.com (show notes available in the blog section)Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-usDiscord: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEmail: [email protected]: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredInstagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredTikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfilteredYouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEditor: Janna Connor
