En esta novela de Carlos Fuentes, Aura, un hombre llamado Felipe Montero acepta el trabajo de terminar de escribir un libro con los documentos y manuscritos del esposo de una mujer vieja que vive en una casa oscura y tenebrosa. La mujer, Consuelo, vive con su sobrina Aura, de quien se enamora (o parece que así es) nuestro protagonista y se obsesiona con la idea de "liberarla" de las garras de su tía para ofrecerle un amor romántico y lejos de ese encierro. Lo que no sabe Felipe es que no todo re real, y que su tránsito de los días empieza a oscurecerse sin entender muy bien quién lo persigue, cómo escapar, quiénes son los habitantes de esa casona misteriosa.
