This research analyzes how long-term vitamin C supplementation can slow the biological aging of primate bone marrow. By utilizing single-cell transcriptomic mapping of cynomolgus monkeys, scientists discovered that aging causes a depletion of immune-related progenitor cells and a shift toward inflammation. Vitamin C administration partially reversed these effects, restoring lymphoid cell populations and reducing the molecular age of the tissue by approximately four years. The study identifies progranulin as a key protein that mediates these protective benefits against age-related decline. Furthermore, the findings reveal that different skeletal sites, such as the rib and femur, exhibit unique molecular vulnerabilities to the aging process.
