139 Looking Back on Bulgarian Awakening, Part 2

from The Bulgarian History Podcast · host Eric Halsey

This episode completes the recap of Season 6 by covering the years 1862-1878. In that time, reforms brought some greater prosperity to Bulgaria but ultimately failed to do nearly enough. Bulgarian revolutionaries organized and began sending armed bands into the territory, culminating in the disastrous April Uprising. Heroes like Vasil Levski and Hristo Botev rose to prominence before dying in their struggles. In the rest of Europe, the Prussian wars with Austria and then France created the German Empire and reshaped the geopolitical map. All of this culminated in the Russo-Turkish War which finally earned Bulgaria some independence. Supporters like you make this podcast happen!
