Frankl, founder of Logotherapy, is most notable for his book, Man’s search for Meaning. The premise of Logotherapy and of his bestseller is, that the primary motivational force of an individual is to find a meaning in life. Without meaning the challenges of life become unbearable, and the good moments in life become fleetingly meaningless. When looking for one’s purpose and meaning in life, I would like to suggest taking a holistic approach, in which we do not isolate ourselves and our purpose from the greater meaning and purpose of the entire world and universe. The question of one’s individual purpose should therefore begin with the question of why did G-d create the universe. Once we understand the holistic meaning of all existence, we can then better ask about our specific individual piece of the greater holistic purpose. This approach leads us to having a relationship with everyone and everything, and therefore, applies to every incidence in our lives, regardless of its pleasantry or pain. This also develops within us an inner-peace of oneness, rather than being fragmented by all the responsibilities and relationships that we have in all the different areas of our lives. In this lecture we will delve into this holistic approach to man’s search for meaning, first getting into the mysticism of the meaning of creation, and then getting into the practical application of meaning and purpose within our own life. This lecture is based primarily on a maamor the Rebbe delivered on the 10th of the Jewish calendar month Shevat, in 1960, exploring what lies behind G-d’s name, Tzva’oit.
