Dr David Banner, searching for a way to tackle the dead and shrimps the whole universe and then an accidental overdose of counter radiation and direct to the mighty council. Hello and welcome to Retrospection and in this episode we're smashing our way through the TV movie The Incredible Hulk Returns from 1988, the final episode in our TV Reunion Trick Tick. This brought back the green months after the series ended in 1982 and for this episode I'm not wearing any jewelry because you won't like me when I'm jangly. Oh, here we go.
My name's Colin and this time you're going to stay and wipe away the milk you've spilled. It is milk, right? I hope it's milk. Hey, if I make a mess I'll clean it up Colin, you know.
You should. Yeah, I will. A manne is Paul and you smell delicious. He tastes very good too.
That's right, I do. Confectionary sugar. I'm glad that's where you went. I'm James and you may not be much of a man but you have a good brain and a white heart.
That's right, as part of his need to get his healthy aged scalp badge, Jay has brought his grandfather along so no loud noises, it could be the end of him. I'm not going to happen. Not like I'd say. TVDB says Dr.
David Banner meets a farmer student who has a magical hammer that summons for a Norse god who is prevented from entering Valhalla when the two superheroes stop fooding one gun off to breathe. They are a team unmatched by any of their enemies like us three. He's how are we? We are super team.
We're a team. Let's not go over again. I think we're more like, you know when they get a super group, you know they take elements from different bands and... Traveling Wilbur is...
Yeah. Which one? Can I be Roy Orbison? Yeah, you can be if you want.
I'll be Roy Orbison. Who are the other two? What's the other reason you chose Roy Orbison, right? George Harrison.
You want to be in? Yeah, I'll be John. At least Tom Petty for you then, right? Castan Incredible Hulk returns.
Features. Bill Bixby is David Banner. Lou Frigano is a Hulk. Jack Colvin is Jack McGee.
Mm-hmm. Really went special with his character name there. Lee Passel is Maggie Shaw. Charles Depeus, Mike Fosch.
John Gabriel is Joshua Lambert. I'm going to do all the people. Jay Baker is Zack Lambert. Steve Levitt is Donald Blake and Eric Allen Kramer as far.
Go on to thunder. I'm glad I'm glad you explain that. It's not really got a thunder. It's just a Viking warrior that's named far, right?
Really? Let's be honest. It's not the real one. So this is why we brought James on board because he is our resident expert in all things like Marvel, right?
More than me. And this is not a pretty true representation of the character. Not in a slightest, right? So he's the god of thunder in a comic, but not in it.
He's more of a genie in a way that you get summoned by a hammer to do something. He'd do something to do whatever they're... Oh, he usually hit people. Pretty much.
As long as you wish for this genie is that you smack somebody upside the hell out. You're pretty much okay. He drinks a lot as well. You know, you're a kind of superhero, to be honest.
Yeah, yeah. Can it be a reunion movie if there's only one character that comes back? No, no, no, no, no, no, it's two. You've got Jack McGee who's from the original series as well.
Who cares? Who cares about Jack McGee? It could be Jack McGee fans like that. Jack McGee cares about Jack McGee.
So did you watch the show? The original? Well, I didn't watch the series that much. I did catch the occasional episodes here and there.
It seemed to follow the farmer that a lot of American shows, like A Team, Little Less Hobo, Highway to Heaven, where a person or a dog comes to a place, solves the problem of somebody and then has to move on. Yeah, pretty much the same. It was pretty much the same every week, really. Right.
They just changed whatever the problem is. I think so. Like you as well. I mean, I probably watched it probably a little bit more than you, but I wasn't what I would call a fan of it.
I caught it when it was on. But I was never really a fan of the show, but you really got into it. Yeah, I'm working my way through them as I go. Currently on, I think, halfway through the second season.
How many seasons were there? I think. Yeah, it was fine. And you're considering your, I won't do you now?
14. 100,000 years old. It just feels that way. Yeah.
There's not many 14 year olds that would watch a show from, what is it, 1975, 1976, something like that? 78. So they go, even knows that. We don't know that.
I did all year ago. So what is it about the original show that you like? I don't know. I think Bill Bixby's David Banner is, I think he's the best person who's played version of that character.
Yeah. Because obviously his name isn't David Banner in the comics. That's right. They changed it, didn't they, for the series.
In the comics, his name's Bruce Banner, but they changed it to David Banner because they were already Mike Sange. Although they put Bruce as his middle name, because in the first episode you can see it on the tombstone. But they never refer to it in case it's too gay. All right.
We'll just, we'll just fly over. For the best, yeah. All right. So this was first broadcast in the UK on the 21st of April, 1991 on Sky movies.
Sky movies? Oh, my God. Okay. So I think, was it the Man from Uncle when we did that one?
You said that was on Sky as well? That was on BSB, which was like the far run of Sky really. Oh, right. Okay.
It's the first actual superhero from Marvel that's turned up in the Hulk series. Yeah. Okay. Because the original producer, Kenneth Johnson, he decided that he wanted it to be grounded in reality and didn't want any other superheroes.
He didn't want any of that superhero nonsense in his Hulk TV show. About a guy who turned into a giant green thing. Yeah. Yeah.
Right. It was more science based, right? You know, a faux science. Yeah.
Pretty much. It was more of the Hulk fighting like, you know, gangsters and just regular people. Did you do an episode refactors? Oh, they must have.
I don't like it. I'm not a big guy with a beard. Yeah. The guy is everything in the eighties.
Yeah. It's always a biker. Yeah. I'm sure that they also did the episode where someone's trying to be run off the land.
Oh, yes. Yes. They're always confirmed it. There is an episode of it.
Excellent. I mean, I guess like the A team and all those shells, they kind of just borrowed the stories from each other. It seems that way. It seems that way.
It seems that way. It seems that way. Yeah. Yeah.
But this was a rating success. It was. I mean, I think they were hoping to use this as a pilot for a 4 TV show. Oh, that's obvious.
We'll talk about that. Yeah. But they didn't consider it how well it did. Yeah, it's really strange.
And they try it again with the second one, which I think is called Trial Is It? Trial Is It Incredible Hulk? And they have Durdevil in that one. And that really is a pilot for a Durdevil show because the Hulk's ugly in it.
Okay. All right. But again, they didn't, they didn't move forward with that one either. Did you know that Lou Ferrign, I'm going to get told off of this because I can never say his name right.
Okay. You say Lou Ferrigno. I said Lou Ferrigno. That's right.
I don't know. I'm going to continue doing it. So Lou Ferrigno. I might start doing it now.
I should have come on now. You should have done. Lou Ferrigno is wig. Apparently he was designed to hide his hearing aid because he did.
Sorry. The classics are going out. Jack Colvin who played Jack McGee in the original show. He actually suffered a stroke soon after he made this.
And that's why the character doesn't appear in the other two movies. I thought he didn't appear in the other two movies because there's a bug or all else you could do with him. Or they make use of him in the original series. He's literally, he was a fugitive that had a guy that was chasing him all the way through the, he was like a digital series.
Yeah, yeah. That's why it's called the fugitive. No, no, no. I mean, there was like a, okay, okay.
He's not a fugitive. He's not a fugitive. He's not a fugitive. It's just called Mounted a lot of Roody.
But they have like a recurring character that was following him. It wasn't there all the time, trying to track him down. Yeah. It's the same principle with Jack McGee that they use it to track David Banner.
Yeah. The littleist hobo had a dog catcher that was always after him. Was it the same dog catcher? No, I'll make it that way.
You could have run with that. I would have believed him. Apparently Bill Bixby hadn't worked in four years prior to making this. Bill Bixby is interesting because he's an actor who I, I mean, I only know him from the show, but he always comes across as one of those actors.
So you can imagine going, I'd like to do an episode that doesn't feature the Hulk. It's just me noting. I think so. Yeah.
Yeah. But he's good in that show. He's the best thing in it, I think. If it wasn't for him, the show wouldn't really work.
Because let's be honest, the Hulk's not that interesting. The Hulk turns up, goes, Grease breaks a few things and then leaves. Look at him see then right next to you. I know, honestly, James, go on, tell me, it's the Hulk.
What Bill Bixby is more important than the Hulk. Yes. But I still think the Hulk is a key character because otherwise why not just call the show David Banner? They should have done.
You're right. Thank you. He's bigger. How did that happen?
It's mind games. This is what he does. I warned you before he started. I mean, it is fair because the Hulk does only appear about two times every episode.
We did get four in this though. Four Hulk Oates in this one. Yeah, but I guess that's just a bit of the run time because obviously it's not a 14 in episode. Yeah.
So four would be right if it was a split to a two part. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
Kenneth Johnson, the original show is produced. He didn't even know that this movie existed until he saw ads appear for it. Probably for the better. Oh, no, no, don't, don't.
Don't pick too early, James. This might be an interesting episode after that. So this story, this whole David Banner incredible Hulk TV show thing apparently takes place on Earth 4000005. Do you want to explain that one, Jay?
Okay. Basically, there's a whole for the people who are not inclined into the comic book universe. Like any name. Yeah.
There is a thing called a multiverse. Okay. And each, each in a multiverse has a different set of numbers assigned to it. Sorry.
Go on, carry up. And so this one must have been labeled as 4000005. But there's the main comic universe. Hang on, you've got to reel them all off.
No. Okay. We'll have like five hours. Stop it.
No. So, and then there's a bunch of other universes that run off that. Is that good nothing? Look him.
No, you know what, if you, if you were here, he'd just go, bolex. Isn't it just a different actor playing the same part? Yes. This is like this is like someone waking up on morning and going, you know, these Shakespeare plays, they're all in different universes.
Um, all these actors that play like a fellow and King Richard and all these other parts, you know, the aunties, they're just in different universes. It's a multiverse that shakes people to hold on. I've got to go to the BBC quickly. I've just thought to something.
I'm amazing that no one's done it. So you should get on that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah everything's multiverse these days the birdie verse you're in the retrospection multiverse like there as well. Yeah, it's successful That would be amazing like infinite number of universes and none of them the retrospection podcast is successful Consider me listening to by the same 25 loyal people exactly it's arranged but loyal Well, yeah, it's true.
Maybe we're in one universe. We don't look like us. Yeah, I could be I could just be like an amorphous Blob sitting on a on a chair. It's interesting that you went for something uglier You didn't go like you didn't go like oh in a some universe.
I could look like Rob Lowe you went for a morphous blob Well, I might do I could have yeah, you know dream a little part doing that in fact dreaming it doesn't dream it create that universe Oh, that's that's that's a dr. Strange thing, isn't it? Confirm this yes you dream old dreams are just glimpses into other universes isn't that in that movie? James we try not to upset our Marvel fans I'm sorry.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Don't matter. I could say whatever I like You bring the guest on and he strikes the place.
I know it's like a leper making fun of another leper, isn't it? No, you've got no nose. I don't know if you've got too fair. Don't make you fall of leper say Maybe planned a few years before this one that would have featured Nicholas Hammond's Spider-Man now that I would have loved Yeah, Spider-Man series I used to watch all the time.
Yeah, I'm going through them now actually It's it hold up because I'm thinking I'm thinking I'm thinking of doing it. Oh, but it's good. It's a good watch It's only 13 of them as well. So music to my ears.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, the movie the pilot movies great. Oh, well I'm gonna dig them out.
Yeah, you should do the watch No, this film was apparently directed by Nicholas Korea Korea We'll go with that and build big speed but apparently it's been said in multiple times that Bill Bixby pretty much took over most of the directing duties Okay, I think he directed all three of them today. I think so because I think I know definitely for the trial of the Well, because I remember seeing his name in the directing I'm not sure about the third one that's interesting No, isn't it because it goes it fits with what you said about him the way you perceive him possibly being as an actor, you know, Mmm, I know best Yeah, but don't don't like of accessing long-running TV shows attempt to do some directing look at Star Trek the next generation pretty much Most of them are go with director true. I mean look at that in DJ Hooker. He did a few didn't he?
Yeah, yeah, yeah I'll start with five. Yeah, you know that one. Yeah, yeah Who doesn't? Podcast yeah, exactly previous out.
Yeah, yeah, I just thought that with it supposed to be this other guy directed it and Bill Bixby obviously Took over and then moved on to directing the next one himself completely himself, you know, that's interesting We'll be shot in Los Angeles apparently the only time they ever shot in Los Angeles for any of the Hulk shows What did they normally shoot? Oh? Come on, so let me let me get this straight poll you got this bit of information, but there's no research You were the act even intrigued you as to where the normally shoots it wasn't Los Angeles So it was it was the rest of somewhere in the rest of the world. Yes And I know for a fact they come to New York.
Yeah, cuz there's a shot of him running down time squirt. Yeah, at least they shot that bit Yeah, he's a little green pumps that he was that you're not supposed to notice In America on NBC on the 22nd of May 1988 Okay, so a few years to get to the UK usually did yeah, yeah, all right. Oh smash. Let's get into the episode So we are with the back so let's just talk about something else because we've complained about the music in our other Reudian TV movies this one pretty good, right?
They don't really do much with the original well, they don't mean credits Just look they are the same credits from the TV show with the same music and everything and it just looks like they've written returns underneath the incredible Hulk probably exactly what they did do but it is exactly the same credit Okay, and the music exactly the same or exactly the same now It's interesting you mentioned that you like the the opening music because it's the original music How do you feel about the score in it though? Pretty forgettable that's the thing isn't it the why why are all three of these these reunion movies are from the 80s the music's pretty terrible Jonathan cuz was was TV show music Instadental music not the theme shooters It usually was just a rework either the theme tune They didn't like write specifically for the scene that no, but I think it was also recorded with proper orchestras Whereas all this stuff seems to be like keyboard stuff doesn't it? I think that's probably what makes a change sheet and it's also we're talking what year are we talking because of my brains gone We're talking 1988 yeah, so we'd already had a few years of Miami Vax. Yeah, there's no excuse really Yeah, yeah, so we all put it back today.
David banner is dead apparently I really guess it is having a nightmare and his girlfriend Maggie wakes up why she's stirring I'm confused she never seen him have a nightmare before and what's more scary to wake up and find the woman just standing The stirring at you you do get the impression that he probably does this every night So she just stands upstairs in every night. Yeah, but he seems to have settled down a bit doesn't he? It does go nice beach house She wants him to move in but he's kind of ready sent about it and apparently it's been two years since he turned into the incredible Hulk How on earth as he managed to not get angry two years? I get angry just getting out of bed I mean, I guess it's easier in the pre-internet age Yeah, yeah angry.
Yeah. Oh, can you imagine now? Every time you went on Instagram or whatever The Martin you for doing every time Disney plus but a new Star Wars series Fergal's the TV again, so James quick question David banner doesn't get full angry. He just gets slightly annoyed.
Does he turn a light shade of green like a pews or something or turquoise? Oh, is it on or not just all I think it doesn't matter even if he's a little bit angry I think that's enough to turn him into the pog alright, okay Just wanted to know so if he's stopped his toe in the morning, then you know No, if he's stuck his toe in the morning, he's probably you can say goodbye to the house I'm just keeping moving on wrecking all these bases. There's always a minion. How where he goes?
He always finds a new woman Summer's a guy, yeah David is employed at the Joshua Lambert research Institute, so is his girlfriend H. R. issue I'll talk about that he's working on a device called the gamma transponder the intends to use to cure himself, but There's a guy watching him Watching him very better it is yeah, and he's posing as his name David Banyan I first I had an issue with this right because he's been doing this for like 11 years and 11 years his alias is David Banyan, which is what I thought It's not a great cover name is it no I mean like after 11 years you'd be like on to weird names now you'd be like hi I'm for treacle pounds. Hi.
I'm a Charlie Turnpike here original crab apple thought I noticed that in every episode of the TV series His name is always David Bergman David Binyan it's always a B. It's always a DB name, so I kind of got to give it credit for coming up with those kind of names It's clearly a joke at this point. Yeah, it must be it must be because in reality He wouldn't even use the name David would it because you just know now you know You'd be looking around the room and trying to do a car so they are you're my name's Stephen Lampshade or something like that Wait, you looked around the room for a first day, but what's around your room that gave you the David Steven part? Just pictures of Steven which Steven Steven Spielberg Stephen Collins Yeah, he's um he doesn't want to he doesn't want any of the limelight for taking this for creating this gamma machine Does he either?
No, he doesn't want the press. How does he keep getting jobs? Who are his references? I was gonna ask her.
How is he doing this? How's he explain the giant gaps in his CV or his resume? They're I's like oh I see I see you've like don't know I mean let's be honest this field that he works. It's pretty small like my field is a archivist everyone knows each other We all got the same conferences and so on so his work in gamma radiation.
They must all know each other So they look at his CV in the car. That's very very impressive. You know there used to be another scientist called David David David Oh David Banna very very similar to your name David Binyan He was very very like he had a very similar CV and you all this stuff He's dead now that's that's really probably someone at some point has got to recognize it because if he's working in the same field And he's got a relatively similar name surely someone there would know of him and have seen him before yeah, David. Oh, I'm not David Oh wait, yeah, yeah, David Yeah, I'm a novel David.
He hasn't changed a lot in 11 years. He still looks insane Yeah, why has he grown a moustache or or longer? I'll show this her off or where I have a strange hat or something You know I did exactly yeah, yeah something He does grow a bit in the second one. Yeah for two seconds and then he shakes it off again Could I use her green?
Oh wait, no So David is gonna use a scabbard device to cure himself at night alone in his lap But he's leaving his notes on a tape recorder. Someone is breaking in it's Blake. It's pretty easy to break into this yeah Place right it's like other no cameras. He's pretty handy with that grappling hook as well.
It's true. It's true. Maybe he's have Something that happens. Okay, excellent.
We always like an explanation even if it's bollocks Just point that out now. We'd still like it. It's just a theory. Oh, you've got a theory.
All right Okay, now it's moves from an explanation to theory. Yeah, yeah, getting good Yeah, well, no, it's getting worse. It'll be just a donation It's getting less tangible just a guess I gotta say one of the reasons I have problem with the show was I always felt bad for Banner like at the end of his movie gun they played that music It was too much like the little solo for me Leave the park guy alone, aren't you? Let's just have an episode where he doesn't get angry.
Nobody picks on him He just sits at home watches TV. Did you feel like it's a doctor at the end of every episode? I did. Yeah, do you want it?
Yeah, I don't really want to know you do that guy Two fingers pop whoa always do fingers Do you think you think he would have learned that you're not to test this stuff on himself alone at night after you know? He's got prior with this going wrong. Yes. Yeah, he's a Victorian scientist.
They were always doing that Yeah, they seem to be although there are there are lots of elements in this and obviously in the original comics of Dr. And there are a lot of elements in gamma radiation very good. We're doing science now I think a lot of the budget for this went on that lab set don't you lots of flashing lights and things. Yeah It's pretty good pretty stands up.
I think yeah, I didn't have a problem with the lab But I'm you know lots of people running around switching stuff on enough. Yeah, good. Yeah. Yeah before David could use the transponder Blake stops the experiment This is the guy who's broken in his Donald Blake He's he's not concerned that David is using a different name or anything You know, it's quite an easy reveal and then Blake reveals that on an expedition He found a cave of a tomb containing a body or far and the symbol saying hey don't wake this guy up No, no seriously don't wake the guy.
No, don't don't wake the guy up Wait a month. Yeah. Yeah, this whole expression bit is where my theory comes in. Oh, do you want to do it now?
So basically you're I my thought was that because he goes out in the snow a lot and yes They got mountains and stuff he would have used something similar to a cracklewood You know what I like it. I like it. But but looks but I like That's that's how this this is how this episode works. Excellent.
This is how we play. Yeah, I like Blake Blake's like beard is great I'm impressed that this expedition flashback actually did some location work. He's not just on a set with like loads of star I mean it's later. Yeah, but there is a couple of shots of actors walking in the snow.
Yeah, yeah So the stories that far has been condemned to never enter Valhalla unless you perform a certain number of good deeds Blake finds a hammer and holding it and far appears now Blake is a part of far badder doesn't believe it This is the 80s. I don't know what a good car is anymore. They'll stick around mates gonna get a lot worse As well, yeah, let me chuckle so Donald Blake and Thor two separate people in this Well in the comics they're the same person. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, I knew that Wow, so to prove his point Blake summons far and he summons far the way I used to try some and Leah Thompson Still doing it who'd you get instead Derek Thompson from casualty I could come in handy. You never know why if I need to want to do the same job for Yeah, I'm sorry. You need some medical advice from a fake medical practitioner. Yeah, yeah Far appears why does for this warrior from Viking types look like you bought his costume from a neighborhood joke shop Even like he's going to a renfer or something.
Yeah, yeah I think it does what it needs to do. I mean, it's not anything like the comic, but it says Viking. Yeah, yeah Right across the chest Got four Can you imagine if this door stuff was just in Blake's head and we see we see it all transformed everything and we cut to what what David Banners actually see it. It's just blakes down in there.
Yeah for a second I thought you were talking about a character called Justin Blake and I was like who the heck is Justin Blake? Sorry, let me just give you a yeah Don't do that so far picks on David because he's worried that David's getting away of the connection between him and Blake and stop him from getting into Valhalla No, David into some machines who then turns it to the Hulk and they have a good old fistfight I thought you want these transformations on they never get any worse. Well, you talk about the whole transformation You like them. I think they look good for the time.
Mm-hmm. Yeah, I don't have a problem. I like that the practical. Yeah I remember reading them what they did was they just put new for ingoing really tight shirts and then get into flex That's what you do in it.
Well, I don't I don't have to flex if it's like, you know, it's an all t-shirts a tight, right? Talking about it's a good job that after the series was canceled for a nod And just let himself go he gets a call we need you again blue and he's like fat sitting in his pants surrounded by chicken wings and beer Oh shit. He puts the phone down. Eiffel Eiffel dust off the weights.
I have to bulk the Hulk Bulk the Hulk sound like a game show tonight on bulk the Hulk he's good testing tests to see how many objects they could bounce on the Hulk's pecs before he's over book the Hulk Let's inspect the pecs it's back the pecs Yeah, no you Lower it spoon on those nipples with you That's what you have to do book the Hulk you have to put cutlery on his pecs Yeah, and then if you put too many falls over you lose it's like it's like a donkey game What you put the thing Bronco That's right Do you like those first priority when he's resurrected is to get hammered? Yeah, he has a hammer don't you? Is that the joke part? Yeah, you don't get it.
No, let's do it again. It's moment science for the death of false. You're okay. Move on Well when um before he appears though I do like how even though David Banner turns into the Hulk he still kind of trying to explain what's happened to Donald Blake Scientifically yes, yeah, like you you're a not yeah, exactly because because this is the first time this character's ever seen any kind of a magical character So because I mean the Hulk even though it's a superhero character It is like we say before pseudo scientifically based in Yeah, it's like it's like Star Trek it has its own bubble of scientific Yes, which is not a word I just made that up go with it It's on it's on bubble and as long as you stay within that in fact every film and every show has a bubble of reality And as long as you stay within that bubble then you can believe in it It's the moment that you burst that bubble that believability stops happen to static discovery looking at you I thought you were gonna go a different To so many to choose from now Yeah, we don't do it all the way down to be No, all right, okay, it's the show that shall not be named Oh, well you've named it I have I'll send Thor after you Oh, no, I've got beer, it's okay Why does Thor just start pushing Banner around for no reason?
Yeah, he's kind of like well I assumed that I did mention if you've been listening that it was because he thought Banner because he'd been told that Banner was a scientist So he thought Banner was gonna break the connection between him and Blake I'll try to and then for good not get to Valhalla Right, so his reaction because all he knows is to fight was to fight against David And you explained that earlier? Yeah, I did really really coherently and quite concise. I'll tell you what for it. Oh, you heard it Yeah, see James James.
That was bar looks see that's how it works Although it's not exactly like the best pals because I mean throughout the whole film They might argue a lot we talk about Blake and Thor Yeah, they have an arc don't they they start off they don't really like each other and by the end of it They are best pals it's like us working for these pockers Yeah, who's the love each other now we just now we're like we're like chips Well, you know, no the TV show. Yeah, yeah, we're Come on we go hey, Paul. How you doing great? Oh, it's great to see you then it goes carton.
I got fucking I was gonna say you know love the very strong word Well, you love me. I tolerate you. That's that's how I was right. All right, I I am glad though that the Green Pain doesn't rub off anymore in the original series.
It used to rub off on this There's a famous one where he's fighting a real bird isn't there and the birds covered in green by it? Yeah, well, maybe the bird was turning to a Hulk the Hulk's gamma the Hulk's gamma radiation Does that hurt? It was gamma radiation rubs off on people. It does it does.
Yeah, my toes are green Oh, you're not gonna hold car on me. No. No, no, no Just just gets like the irritated So Blake makes for vanish after there's a big fight people see the fight from outside a Hulk runs off right next morning Bana take some clothes from a line leaving somebody and I guess that's in there because there was always that joke about the show where his clothes Would rip when he changes and then the next day he'd be back to wearing clothes again But nobody know where he got the clothes from. Yeah, yeah, it's good.
They keep money in his pocket as well for that very same Situation man and the back pocket doesn't rip also what would he do now? Don't be carries cash. He'd have to fend though Funny how when he transforms into the Hulk his jeans get shorter and they become like ripped and shorts But then when he transforms back into the van at the light normal size game, but with a little rip at the bottom Magic Supergirl magic What if the line is full of just women's clothes? Then he's got I mean hold on hold on not there's anything wrong with wearing women's underwear parmader healthy living in the late 80s doing that No, it's true James.
They used to call him the underwork over bouncing here bouncing there the other worker It's everywhere. What's he seeking? Why is he peeking from the work? Yeah Strange So I want to help him fix up the lab as payment for causing all the trouble doesn't he does Yeah, and the fight is just in the press it's passed off as a publicity stop He also says he put him up at his apartment as well It seems like a good plan to make me what could possibly go wrong there.
Yeah Blake is an archaeologist, right? Yes How's he gonna help in this lab? That is true. I didn't think about that.
Yeah Got a lot of gamma radiation knowledge after you mr. archaeologists And apparently it's not even a good archaeologist because he says that he slept through the classes or something at the beginning of the Yeah, that's why he recognizes him and remembers it wasn't it because he was the guy that didn't do very well. Yeah, but he's helping him in Yes, yeah, he's clicking those blinky lights So we cut to Jack McGee phoning his old newspaper boss trying to get a job again as he sees the headline about the monster and giant fighting He's convinced it's the hook. How has this guy been making a living after 11 years?
You think he's given up after this one story. Hey Jack We need you to cover the story about the housewife that went crazy a colorful husband. Oh, sorry. I am chasing the green monster Well, he's even got deep savings that he's been burning through for the last 11 years.
Well deep savings good album No, technically it's stated in the film. He hasn't transformed in the house in two years So he's only he's only been chasing him up to about two years ago. It's not 11 years No, so alright, so he's chasing for nine. Oh, I'm a master's company's nine years and then for two years Jack was just He's not Jack was a Out though that Zack Lambert one of the people who works for this company is making a deal of a criminal to steal the transpond They're good to see Tim Thomas and turn up in this always like he was bring something special to everything I think I don't you like him.
Yeah, James. Did you like him? He's in a movie. Great.
He's in a movie called near dark James To watch it he was confusing why'd you keep refusing to watch near dad because Something about vampires with guns just doesn't It's boring James. Let's be honest Yeah, you know I like fun pose with guns But if you were a fan player what you want to go on What was the other person's got a gun? Wooden bullets Is that movie with Bruce Campbell sundown where he plays Van Helsing and it's like a Western. It's got David Carradine in it I think I've seen that you're watching great.
It's a good fun little silly horror movie But but done don't jokingly suck a what might be like a Western time and all the time of vampires and Bruce Campbell plays I'm like the great great great great round son of Van Helsing and he goes to this time and he's they've all got wooden bullets Okay, so I will check it out James. We'll check it out, right? Yeah, just watch it. We'll watch it just after we watch near dark So the lab is being rebuilt and then there's a conversation between David and Blake and they're trying to figure out why for Selective like a white Blake was chosen by Odin.
I guess really yeah Meanwhile Jack McGee turns up the lab fishing for information David sees him and hides actually I've suddenly remembered Paul Your wife wants actually why you couldn't be tall and slim like you used to be and you replied you won't like me when I'm gangly We've got many more of these you got a few more of these stick around yeah I'd say it's always convenient that Jack never Seeds or like finds David is that what happens in the show? Yeah, there's all there's even a scene in the first episode of the second season Where he rings the doorbell of the place that David staying in and he just so happens to turn around just as David opens the door And then David quickly shuts the door before he turns back around Worst during the list in the world. It is similar to the military police in the 18 That is true. That is true.
They're always slightly not 10 minutes at the end. Yeah, it's just a TV believe it Back of banners place Blake calls for up because they're gonna have a conversation right now This scene actually does a good job of humanizing for I think yeah, definitely Do you know what it's like to be without flesh Blake without flesh that you could feel without blood pumping for your limbs We know hurt and no chest hold it and still at the same time to be awake not sleeping not dead not anything a place of mist Smoke darkness alone is it seems some terrible dream and then then Blake to hear the call It's like a war-hard in battle and then to awaken as you were when men and women ate life with shining teeth I know them are left now, but I am what I always will be and I need to drink eat life with a woman fight with a man Just a taste Blake now you used to say that in front of the mirror every Friday night. Didn't you pal? We know the whole world could hear you I was gonna say to you call it, you know, yeah, we like what you've done, you know, but we're gonna go in a different direction for this one Alright, so I keep coming.
I could do it. I could do it. I could do it. Communically.
Do you know what I'd like to be without flesh Blake? Well, I feel hold on. I thought the comedic version was the version of it. No, no, no, no, I can also do it in semaphore Come on, then.
Oh God Hold the flags for the audience Turn in Moscow Could you please just leave we'll call you I mean we won't but I did all that just for the joke though, you know that right? I know that it was very good. I think it was impressive it was something It was so it yeah Blake takes far to a bike a bear. I think when I'm 60 that's what I'm going to do I'm gonna grow my hair long what's left of it.
We'll ever get a big ride and just drive Although there was a period where I had long heard that no no big hog though although although we did call Paul big hulk for a while Yeah Oh yeah, when you said that this is what you're gonna do when you're 60 I thought you meant you're gonna take thought of a back about I'll take far to a back about I know you would I know what you said about this this portrayal of thought I'll take this any day over the silly moronic version that we get in the MC you know Yeah, I thought it was I actually genuinely not making fun of it. I thought it was not the back of me But that seemed really stark. I thought that was a good scene. Yeah, it was wasn't it?
Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, it's not just a really iron for you know, it's not just that is it. I didn't know for us from like this year Oh Doesn't sound like the kind of music you'd have in a breaker, but does it? No, it's got that sort of generic But like the kind of music they all used to play night ride or whenever you use to go for bar To clear to questions one it sounds like the only music you could get clearance for me too Is it the original music from the it was first shown or did they have trouble clearing it for the DVD etc? No, no idea.
No no no, it says it sounds dodgy Yeah, and this this this bike has seen it It's been done a million times, but it's okay farm and wrestles he dances he fights he's happy Yeah, I've seen it before it's whenever you bring a fish out of water character Wherever it's like a caveman from the past into modern times you take him to a bear, right? That's what you do I think they even do the same a similar kind of scene in the first MCU thought movie don't they really take him somewhere like this Then he's after you know not to eat his name. They take him to a coffee shop. Yeah, it's a coffee shop Cusses and Terminator goes to the bike of a bear.
That's true. That's true. I appreciate one of these bikers are in turn Probably yeah, yeah, so you know, but it's okay He does end in a lot of manly hand clapping and flexing doesn't it not so that going on even though armrests Yeah, yeah, don't you like a bit manly hand clapping depends on his hand and clapping I can ask James as well James like a bit manly hand clapping He doesn't like to be touched he's agrophobic Are you sure agrophobic means what you think? I don't know what it means.
I just I just Yeah, well, at least it's a clean word. Yes Back at the lab David's working late. He sees a suspicious truck and a guard knocked out and the phones are also disconnected When he and the security guy go down to see what happens They are stopped by Mike Fosch a guy working for Jack and his cronies and they fight and banner turns into the Hulk Now when they're running out in a building, you notice that one guy trips over absolutely nothing Yeah, he does a weird forward roll for no reason I stopped it played it back. It's a lot of motion does nothing though that he trips over.
He just does a trip Yeah, I noticed that it's good to see Charles Napier though Yes, yeah, he's a the space hippie in a real soundtrack with me See what happens James is pulled as a tiniest bit of research then gets a smug look on his face when he says it like He's got this passing of knowledge. It's interesting. He's got one. He's got a look.
He's gonna look even smoke What I know what I'm saying. I want is also the voice of the Hulk in this what in this? Oh He is really I did that I did not know he is the voice of the Hulk from season three to five and in the three TV Ah, see Paul. That's how you do information because that's what everything Oh, well, let's help you know it's more than that the first and second season was take Cassidy It also does the narration at the beginning of every episode.
Does he do the narration at the beginning of this? Oh all the narration is the same as each episode in the oh, okay. There you go. See Paul Fascinalism it's amazing to me that the narration is by Lurch from young's family See see some of what case face again.
I didn't do any research for that. I actually didn't do research for the Charles Napier thing I just remember him being the space hippie in Star Trek. Yeah Hulk returns to Maggie's Beach House and he turns back to David and she finds him laying there topless with a dog David How could you he's a pedigree? Can I just say in the scene where he is the whole can the whole fight scene, but when he when he runs away You can see the shoes that he wears as he runs.
Yeah, there's a few scenes like that They paid to green right why can't he just be birth for because he's not really the whole Well, he's taking clean the ground I mean, he's not running the whole distance. He's supposed to be just really a bit and then they go He also does run like a cartoon character where he kicks his feet behind. He does not be a bit of a high-kick when he runs Oh, yeah, never first of all, I guess he does. Yeah, yeah So like you said she finds him half naked and confused outside in a bush doesn't she?
Oh, you've been there a few times? At this point she's probably thinking alcoholic, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Mike gets sold off by Jack for not getting the transponder and telling the story about a green monster There's a weird line where they call each other apparently they're supposed to be cajun. Did you get that from these accents?
I'd get that No, I've seen the big easy Occasionally Tim Thomas is not even bothering Well, maybe they've moved when they were young. Yeah, maybe I like it Tim Thomas doesn't have to because he's Tim Thomas and you know how that is to say that I really love this guy. All right, fair enough next morning David tells Mike He needs a couple of days to figure things out and he can't tell what it is suddenly helicopter appears on a van with men pretending to be cops Arise tranquilizer dirty spider Maggie Blake arrives and sees what's going on as someone's far bad guys starmed the house So I beat some bad guys up bad guys grab Maggie. He'll just be hit by trunks like that now You would think any dosage that slows down the whole without you kill Maggie Yeah, it's a huge tranquilizer They should well it must be a difference in dosage.
You don't give a horse Does he go to a sexy Like a real area get like an 80 So I wonder where you going when you said sexy dogs, I thought we're moving into confessions territory again I just my dream world. Yeah, I know I do like this action sequence though. It's interesting that even though the superpower they aren't leaping around in like a CG cartoonish way because they couldn't do that So it kind of looks and feels plausible. Yeah, they're not too super powered.
It's not completely ridiculous No, it's not they're not throwing people through six-story building who are then testing themselves off. Yeah, yeah You go that guy's not a superhero. Why's he getting off? He's dead.
Yeah, yeah Hulk and far try to stop the helicopter, but it gets away. Yeah, that's again They can't even stop a helicopter when they team up. That's fair enough How would you stop a helicopter once it's taken off? Well, I mean in in the modern versions of the Hulk He just literally smashed it to the ground with one hand, wouldn't he?
Yeah, I was a though when Refereno tries to hold on to the helicopter here He doesn't look they amount of muscle in makes him not look real like it's me like the upper chest area kind of like six inches It makes his head like sinking doesn't look real. Does he look real to you, Paul? He's real. He's really he's really the Hulk is me.
All right I was always told yeah, and you know me. I believe I'm told that's true. Yeah Later in traffic reporter Jack turns up at the beach house just a little bit too late ask questions about the green monster running away with a Viking Yes, he gets the home address of Bunyan. Yeah, and Seems to enjoy pose in around banners apartment.
It's gonna be towel drinking beer It's on the afternoon for you Colin. It is I just put this t-shirt on because of you two guys. I'm only I'm just Picked out we can we can be thankful for that. We really can yes I don't really don't want to see it come back, you know, thanks.
You know, so you're welcome anytime David sees Jack arriving Yeah, so Jack knocks at the door at the top of slower answers with a beer kind of scurs Jack, right? It's a bit homo erotic isn't it says I'm looking for a man You Well he means like, you know, I'm the ultimate man. He's always a bit sexual tension going on. Oh, he means he's the ultimate man because he's far He's the manly man.
Yeah, I was a Jack and I just saw this big muscle man come out of this room Supposedly meant to be the room of scientists. Are you suggested that scientists can't be bossily? No, but I mean James James James. I have a science degree Not saying it not like it.
No, no, it's playing So to get a call from the bad guy saying they want the transponder diluted them and I'll let Maggie go, right? Yeah, we cut to the bad guys and Zack is having second thoughts about kidnapping Maggie That wasn't part of the original plan and we know that since Thomas in his character is evil because he's sitting with his goons sipping whiskey Yeah, sorry sitting with his goons To hold well Sipping whiskey is a bad guy absolutely does that make you the ultimate woman? Well, you know, I don't like to brag What ultimate villain because you have to be good at it. I don't see it Well only for the first few six and then it's a thin line between good villainy and drunk villainy And I think I know where that line is you know where it is you just don't pull over it.
You do you do you just ride that line Like it's the buffalo from hell Yeah So bad as sabotage is the machine doesn't he? Oh, I've just remembered you know Paul used to be in a band they wanted him to play drums, but he wanted to play guitar He refused he said you won't like me with a twaggy No, that's my favorite that's my favorite one No, no, no, no technically I'd only done to making these up off the go along now Oh So pano sabotage is the machine by frat taking a bit over any sticks in a microwave. Why can't you rebuild this? Yeah, but he's just spent we just move on doesn't he I suppose but it's not his little bit the microwave Why doesn't he destroy anyway?
Then I'll just put in his pocket. Yeah, also wouldn't that like to explode? It would explode just if you put metal in a microwave. Yeah, it's true.
They don't melt it. Yeah, yeah It looks like he's it looks like a cake the way it's melted. It doesn't look like it's made out of metal doesn't it looks like he's Oh, maybe David banner. It's just a fraud.
He knows absolutely nothing about gamma radiation That's why screwed up and turns the hook in the first place and so he's just going around going Oh, yeah, I know everything about gamma radiation, but then just before the experiment finishes he buggers up We don't know that this little chip thing did anything good. I don't know for all we know that's true He's like a Blake. I don't know anything pocket the check So thanks the Hulk and I leave great. It's a great scam to see walking off into the distance To Kicks a puppy and walks off Phone call Zach Lambert's been shot and at the hospital he spills the beans about his involvement and tells them were the bad guys are holding Maggie I don't Blake go to the warehouse and so far so first plan is he goes in the back and David and Blake take the front Did you see the big buddy summons him though because they're trying to sneak around there's all these bad guys everywhere And he does this huge loud thing which screaming oh did and there's lights and everywhere because leah Exactly and then went for a peter's thought speaks slightly louder than normal and he doesn't just Josh Yeah, sorry.
We didn't see all the lightning No, we didn't see that we didn't say Joshua lamp But turns up because he overheard the location in the hospital room and Joshua's got a shoot his way in But I tried to stop him but Joshua hits him and that turns banner into the hole of course they fight Everyone fights Blake machine guns one of the men isn't that murder? Well take it self-defense, isn't it? Is that how it works? Well, he's somebody shooting at you.
Isn't that why you know it's your country? This is how it works. Isn't it? Someone shoots at you a new machine gun And there's no proof of anything that's going on Just got the word of the person you've killed because you've killed everybody and you're like they kidnapped this guy And then the other guy bag I go no I didn't and it's not work.
Well. Yeah, it's not proof of any of this They do they do capture the main bag guy. Yeah, so he's got a yeah, who says no Yeah, he's just a machine gun in people Okay Alright, yeah Everyone's killing everyone. Oh, no, even the Hulk he must kill at least three people when he hits them with that massive iron girder Not so Considering Like hell bent on the whole not killing people David Banner that's not the Hulk Does David just established?
Sorry. Go on. It's established in the first episode But if David Banner won't kill the Hulk won't kill. Well, he seems to have gotten over that last 11 years Doesn't he?
Yeah, yeah, and there's a question for James. Does David Banner remember the stuff that the Hulk does? Doesn't? Ah, so David Banner doesn't remember the Hulk killing these people so it's very easy so the Hulk can just kill it Once you do a banner's not gonna know about it.
So it doesn't matter. Alright, fair enough. I'll go with that Yeah, it's a good explanation is any yeah far frozen time Right and the car well it doesn't slow down for no reason just jumps into the old turns over which kind of strange laws of physics going on But I'm doing that hammer so small as well. It doesn't look like it would like It has the power of They do say that though about big body built the time so you know big body small hammer I thought he said isn't it right?
That's why I got a massive And a tiny body Exactly can't get up. Um, it's a decent enough Solid enough Yeah, okay, she's a little cheap. I can you know, where's a bag I gonna go anyway? It's gonna go to a warehouse.
It's a truck is not run down factory where I stroke and I say the calf lip, you know, that's a good old 80s trope as well as now 18 logic that is yeah It is but here's a tip so the bag guy has got a gun you study for the Hulk He says like you can still die if you got to shoot the Hulk step away from him So he can grab you gone because you know what guns can work from a distance You see that in so many things as well, don't yeah, yeah, yeah step back a bit Then he can't grab the gun because you know what well, it's gonna move Hulk and father after the police arrive Maggie will never know the full story Jack McEade turns up at the end after banner is gone Yeah, he's laughing stop now. It's a period isn't he again. Yeah, yeah, yeah So we cut to far really topless with Maggie's dog. Well, won't they leave this dog alone?
Hey, the dogs get an exercise. The always get an exercise Everyone's happy everyone's happy especially the dog and Blake realizes his farce partner ready for that spinoff Yeah, they go off for more adventures in their own long-running hit TV show that I like to think must exist somewhere in the multiverse of Marvel, right? What would it have been called just foreign Blake just far? Farce Hammer just for just for by Odin Yes Foreign friends.
Yeah good. Yeah Uh banner at Maggie sit by far in the beach. He knows he has to leave even though they love each other. Yeah in the morning We see his silhouette slowly disappearing along I was gonna say I'll argue be quite fun before you're under for stock James came in he did he was the first one he would break and that's the end of So shall we count rather that's the end of the Incredible Hulk returns.
So James, what did you think of the Incredible Hulk returns? Well considering I've seen this twice I at first I thought it wasn't all great, but rewatching it for this podcast. I enjoyed it more than I did the first time Why um I think I didn't I'm sick of stuff Um, I don't know. I just don't think I really got it at first, but then rewatching it.
I think I took it in a bit more And ended up liking it what you mean the the complex plot of it went over your head slightly the first time I watched it. Oh, it's interesting Okay, and and I think I'm having watched the show before it kind of gave me a bit more of a Liking for it bit more backstory to lead into it. Yeah. Yeah I'm so nice Paul I'm kind of similar to him.
You know, I've only seen this twice and I didn't like it the first time I thought it was I thought it was Cheap looking but weirdly when I watched it again, I didn't think it looked as cheap a second time Right. Maybe because I took it in a little bit more because we were doing it for the podcast Right feels very 80s. Yeah, very 80s. Yeah, and like I said before at the start of the episode I wasn't a big fan of the original series.
It was never a must see for me But I have to say on this rewatch of this movie. I quite enjoyed it It feels like a live action 80s cartoon to me thought was fun. There's quite a few Hulk outs I think all the cast will watch especially Bill Bixby does make it. I think he makes it into something slightly above what it really is Yeah, he's a good actor.
Yeah, he's a good actor. He's a good actor. He didn't like the music apart from the incident of music But like we said, this seems to be a trend for these 80s reunion shows cheap music. Yeah, I liked it.
I thought it was a fun watch I'm gonna call it a hit as well. Oh interesting two hits So like Brianick showdown, this is another reunion movie that is used to spin off a new show that never happened Unlike showdown. I think they handled it in a superior way here Yeah, but I know the Hulk still get enough of her time And he don't feel like he being shot changed plus both Blake and Thor are likeable characters and while the Bursine isn't original It's fun. And you do feel like you want to spend more time with them The Hulk well, he's the Hulk.
He's never for me been the interesting one in the series He's big green and bash his things and that's pretty much it. Bill Bixby always makes fantasy unbelievable Even though the absurd parts of the story are unbelievable. Yeah Maggie's shot character is underwritten and feels like she's the just to be kidnapped to drive the third act I think that's an 80s thing as well, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, the villains they're okay They do the job, but they could have done with more quirky characters, but the action is solid and the movie moves along pretty quickly So before I give my judgment, let me rank it with the two other reunion movies we watched in third place Bionic showdown.
I'd agree with that. I'd agree with that in second place drum roll The man from uncle 15 years later first. So in first place. Yes, the incredible Hulk returns I thought it was entertaining and a hit and I would have watched the far spinoff.
Wow, okay I mean, I would have watched it as well. Um I have it slightly the other way around. I've still got uncle top and Hulk second. Okay.
All right, so yeah, I've been quite easily switching around You know, depending on how I feel. Yeah, they're both they're both good. Nice. So it's a hit for all three of us.
I'm shocked at that I know you were gonna absolutely hate this and I think you did too, isn't you? Yeah There you go. There you go. If something's okay.
I like it. I'm not mean about stuff for the sake of it. You got to watch the other two movies Oh, hell no, I might do actually. I might do.
I've never seen the third one. I might go back and watch the series first And then yeah, watch him in order. I think you'll find bits of it that you like it some like you said It's very much of that going to a different town every week and helping a mother who's lost a kid or something Well on that note, I always have to remember to zip up because you won't like me when I'm dangly And there's a lot of episode comes to a crush and cult. We thank James for joining us Thank you to our listeners and thank you to our patreon supporters for helping to keep our other episodes online and until next time Ta-ra.
Bye-bye
