141 Why "Gaba/Traz" is not always the best option
from Veterinary Behaviour Chat
Episode 141 – Why "Gaba/Traz" is not always the best option This episode was inspired by a lecture I gave at BVA Live 2026 and the ensuing questions and discussion about the use of Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals. The truth is that while gabapentin and trazodone can be a good PVP combination for some canine patients, it should not be used as a "one size fits all" approach for all dogs requiring anxiolytic support at the veterinary clinic and we should, instead, consider each patient as an individual and tailor their medication regime accordingly. In this episode I chat about: · Cats versus dogs when it comes to PVPs. · Why anxiolytic doses of gabapentin can cause vulnerability in canine patients with musculoskeletal disease. · Why trial doses at home are imperative. · Other options for PVP combinations. If you are a vet who often reaches for "Gaba/Traz", then this episode is a good nudge to think about patient choices and other PVP options.
