This research identifies a critical molecular connection between BMP7 deficiency and the development of preeclampsia (PE), a dangerous hypertensive disorder during pregnancy. Scientists discovered that BMP7, a growth factor usually abundant in the placenta, is significantly reduced in patients with PE, leading to an abnormal increase in TGM2 protein levels. Under normal conditions, BMP7 promotes healthy trophoblast invasion and placental formation by suppressing TGM2 through a specific intracellular signaling pathway. When this balance is disrupted, elevated TGM2 restricts the ability of placental cells to migrate and remodel maternal blood vessels, a hallmark of the disease. Experimental treatments using recombinant BMP7 in animal models successfully reduced PE-like symptoms and improved placental health.
