from Retrospection · host Colin and Paul

In this episode we’re playing with our Halloweenies as we embrace all that is dark and sultry with Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988). Along the way Colin has an idea for a new podcast, Paul is dismayed by the treatment of comic book heroes, and they both get lost in an innuendo maze of their own making.

Hello and welcome to another episode of Retro's Spectrum and it's Paul's favourite time of year. October Fest where he gets drunk every day. Every day he's on top of a fest. Oh it is.

You have a t-shirt that says that? I do, several. Actually it's our annual celebration of all the dispine curdling as we prepare for Halloween by freaking out for the scuriest, most disgusting, blood spurting sights that have ever been committed to celluloid. El Vira, mistress of dirt from 1988.

Well the wussoms spurton. Yeah, well he's there, didn't he? Hey, you knew it was coming. Well, hey, hey.

You guys, not really a horror film though, is it? Well I don't know, I disagree with that. I think it's got horror elements. I mean, it's about, I mean, it's called El Vira, mistress of the dark, or a star.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You don't get to be a horror film just because your title has a word, dirk in it. I haven't finished. It's also got, it's got a wall lock in it.

It's about what she is. Is dirt crystal horror films got dirk in it, Paul? You didn't let me finish. I never do.

I know. Hey. That's going to be a long night. It is, it is.

Strap in. Anyway, a true horror film for you is 90 minutes of you watching me, No, why did you have to go there? That's going to give me nightmares. I know.

Yeah. I know it's Halloween, but come on. There's a line across the line. There is a line, you've crossed it.

You're very close to it. So I've stepped back. I thought I'd seen El Vira, mistress of darkness, before, but then the memories didn't come back. Oh, here we go.

And you're having to go with me. Yeah. Yeah. My name's Colin, and my appearance is a kind of shock to everybody.

I mean, I've known you for, I've known you for, I've known you for 35 years and you still shock me every time I see you. No, no, no, it must be only 15. I'm only 25. Oh, of course.

Yes, I've got, I've got, we have to keep this perpetual myth going. No, that's right. That's true. That's true.

And my name's Paul, and go on, try your intellect on me. I'll see you in hell first. Oh, you've already been once. What the hell?

Actually, didn't we grow up there? Okay, I think we did, yes. IMDB says, El Vira, mistress of the dark, is a 1988 comedy horror movie, upon arriving in a small town while a Vira has inherited a rundown mansion, the famous horror host must battle an evil uncle. Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Yeah. Right on the money. Phil Stair's Cassandra Peterson is El Vira. Phil Rubenstein is director.

Larry Flash Jenkins is technical director. I mean, they sound like production credits, but they're not. These are people in the, I know, it's weird the way that the credits go. It lists people who are on the end, the very beginning, for five seconds.

It does. It does. Yeah. And Edie McClurg has chasted the pariah, who included it because she's in every kind of comedy series in America.

Yeah, the one that, the movie that sticks in my mind is that she, isn't she the car rental person that Steve Martin tries to rent a car for the ones? Yeah. Yes. Yeah.

Classic scene. Classic scene, then. Yeah. So I have no knowledge of El Vira.

So this is new to me. And I didn't understand how big at one point she was. Yeah, she was, she was a horror host of a show called Moving the Carvera in the, in the United States. And it's a point of it's weird for us because we don't really have a history in the UK of horror hosts, do we?

We don't have a history of that kind of hosts full stop because they also have one here for murder mysteries as well, while they did do. Yeah. Yeah. We don't really have, I guess, no, Alex Cox, I guess would be for movie drama.

Remember that? Were he introduced to film? Yes, on BBC Two. Yes.

Yes. I think that's the first time I ever saw the term, are you? Really? Yeah, I think so.

Yeah. On my little black and white portable TV that I had in my bedroom, I was about 11. We did actually have a horror host in the 90s in the UK. This is the only one we've ever had.

Roland Bratz? You're close. It was a guy called Dr. Terra.

I don't know if you remember this. Was a gynecologist? He looked like one, actually. He was, it was kind of like a demon in a, I think he was wearing a smoking jacket at the time.

And he would introduce horror movies on BBC Two. And this, this went on for a couple of years, actually. Like, different seasons. No recollection of this whatsoever.

They weren't your kind of movies, though. I mean, it was all Hammer. No, they were rubbish. It was all Hammer and, you know, 70s horror movies and things like that.

Which is where I think I saw a lot of these, those kind of movies, really. Right. You know. Right.

You know. Yeah, but that's the only one that we have as a proper bonafide horror host in the UK. So, so Elvira to me, I don't think I'd heard of Elvira until this movie. Okay.

And that there's a whole shtick of this in Greville as well. There is, yes. With, it's a guy dressed as kind of like, he looks kind of like the vampire in the monster, doesn't he? Grandpa?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Um, so, so this movie made in 1988. First aired in the UK on the 17th of February, 1996. On TV?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Guess what channel? Sky. Nope. Is that your radar choices?

Are you done? Okay. Channel 4. Nope.

Go on. It's surprising, then. UK living. .

Cool. Which of, I had to look it up, but apparently it was a channel that focused on women's issues. Well, I mean, women's issues are in forefront of this movie. Yeah.

But it's true. It's true. They're right up there. They are a couple of issues, especially.

Yeah. Big ones. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Um, so straight straight to the top of this movie, then, when it, when it heard any UK. Yeah. Obviously, that took so long to get here.

Oh, why? Your face, then. You were trying to work out when I was actually cracking another joke about breasts. So, sometimes it's very hard to know.

What you're saying is that you ended up? It is. It is. It's like a mind thing.

I was just slowly stepping through going, is this one? It's not going off in my face. Whoa, there we go. Oh, we're in the spirit of the movie.

Let's face it. That's what I'm trying to do. Yes. Yes.

Because that's what this film constantly does. It's a carry on movie. And I'm going to talk about that later, but it is a carry on movie. Interesting.

Interesting. Tim Burton was supposed to direct it. Yes. Um, but apparently, uh, he passed.

He died? No, not passed away. He just passed. Oh, he just passed.

I think it wasn't he busy doing something else. He was busy doing something else. And the guy that actually directed it, he was not really a director at all. He was best known for working on the Saturday Night Live.

And apparently, he was a cameraman on the Paradise. It's the previous episode. Yeah. I mean, you could tell.

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. In a good way, obviously. All right.

We'll talk about that then. Actually, I've got, I watched this on the, um, the arrow Blu-ray, which is a really nice Blu-ray. Comes with a really feature-length long documentary about the making of the movie. And you can watch it with an introduction by the director.

It was kind of funny because he, I think he's, I think it's, I think he's ripping on it because he's obviously a comedy director. But the whole, the shtick is that he can't get his introduction, right? So they have to piece it together from all different takes. It's kind of funny.

Oh, all right. It was a good Blu-ray. Nice. You have any more info?

So the movie cost, uh, $7.5 million to make. It's lost the made it's money. Ah, lost the made it's money back. Didn't.

It didn't. It, it, it, it grows 5.5 million. Oh, that's close, I guess. That's a sure thing.

There is a reason for it though. Um, so this movie was released by, well, distributed by a company called, uh, New World. Yes. So the logo at the beginning, it was a long time since I've seen that logo.

They were the go to horror, um, distribution company back in the 80s. So many horror movies, low budget horror movies. I think it was a Roger Coleman thing actually. New World feature.

But apparently the day before the movie was due for general release, the company went out of business. So that caused the number of theaters showing the movie to drop from around 2,500 to just 500. Wow. Okay.

So that's, that's, that's gonna, that's gonna kill it. Yeah. But it must have made his money back on video rentals and things like that. It was a massive hit, um, on video later.

Yeah. I think that's where the, the, the love for this movie comes from. I think a lot of people find this movie on video later. Totally see that.

Yeah. The film wasn't well received by critics either. Um, Peterson was nominated for Best Actress for a Santa World, but also a worst actress at the Razzies. Did she win either of those?

Um, I couldn't find the, whether, whether she won or lost, but I would imagine either way, it's not a good thing to carry around, is it? No, no. And this was her first proper, acting role because up to this point, all she'd done was, was moving the camera where she was reading from an auto queue. So she, she did struggle a little bit at first.

To actually do this. But you and I have seen her in something else recently. We watched it recently. We watched it at a Fall Guy episode that she's in.

Yeah. And, and the reason for that is it was written by the guy that wrote this movie. Yes. Yeah.

Um, what do you think of the episode? Well, I mean, it's the kind of, it's the episode, it reminded me of the episode of the 18 that the boy George turned up in it, you know, it was, it's that kind of, it's kind of cookie cutter. Oh, look, we've got to guess that this week that everyone knows, you know, but it was a good, good showcase for the character of Elvira. Right.

Mm hmm. Yeah. It's interesting actually because they talk about it a little bit on the documentary on the Blu-ray and they keep getting the name of the show wrong. To get the name of the Fall Guy, John Wrong.

Yeah. What do they call it? Well, one, one of the people talking seems to remember it as an episode of chips. Okay.

Not even similar in the slightest. Another guy refers to it as the action guy show. I think he called it. Action guy show.

Yeah. And then another one refers to it as a fairly unmemorable TV show. It doesn't even call it anything. Whoa, I got a second.

And these are all people that worked on this movie as well. Yeah. Yeah. Let's just take a second to celebrate people who are less researched than us.

Absolutely. And these are professionals. Supposedly. Well, I kind of enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the episode. Yeah, I thought it was fun. I'll watch anything with the violin. That's why it was, but I will.

What is it about that you find so attractive other than the, you know, prominent points? I just like her as a character. I like, I mean, I was saving all this for like. What character is there?

She's, she knows she self-aware. She knows what she is in any given situation. She doesn't take herself seriously. She, she pokes on herself.

She is a smart person in the room, but she's really kind of, that's only because everyone else around her is stupid, if you know what I mean. Sounds like the way you feel about yourself. You're not wrong. Is that what it is?

Yeah, it might be. She's a strong female character in a, in a movie like this one that I think if you took it superficially, wouldn't probably seem that way because you think it would. It's not like people look at carry on movies and they think that the, the, you know, the sexist. Um, when really the, as we always say, the female characters are the strongest characters in the movie, it's the same for Elvira.

She's the strongest character in this movie and generally in everything that I've ever seen her in. Because she uses her sexuality to achieve things, you think that's it? That's part of it. It's also, she's got, she's got, she's got, she's a word of the effect that she has on there.

Yeah, and she's got street smarts as well, isn't she? I suppose you can call her, you know. Right, right. Um, and obviously, it looks great.

I think she looks amazing. Um, and, and. Cassandra pete is in herself. I, I just, I just really like her as a, as a person, really.

Okay. Yeah. Um, I'm a big fan. I was going to say it's till the end because I kind of spoiled it now, but you know, I am a big fan of Elvira.

Oh no, it could be a big fan of her not like that. That is true. That is true. Although I've already said that I own it.

So. But, you know, yeah, well, thank you for listening. Bye. Bye.

Bye. That was an easy one, Paul. Um, originally the character was going to be spun off into a sitcom. Um, but the decision was finally made for NBC to produce a movie.

So this was produced by NBC, who, who would started a new, um, kind of sign. Company to do movies. And this was like the first one that they, that they produced. Um, and they were hoping that this would probably lead into sequels and then a TV series.

They actually wanted to do the TV series first, but Cassandra Peterson was adamant that she wanted to do a movie first and then go to TV because it would be harder to go from TV to a movie in the 80s. All right. It wasn't as fluid as it is now. Yeah.

Yeah. I can see there's been a TV series though. Oh, absolutely. And it comes with its own theme tune, which is the song at the end of the movie that we'll talk about when we get there.

Yeah. Um, William Morgan Shepherd got the role of Uncle Vinnie after Vincent Price, passed on it because he thought the scripts were a little bit too racy for him. Racy? I mean, I mean, was it, was it a racy script in 1988?

Or is that just an old man's thinking it's racy in 1988? Well, yeah, I think they might be a little bit of that, you know. But they are the friends. It's not animal house, is it?

It's not. It's not. I think this was made today. It would be a lot more, um, next time.

Today, today, but you've been tamer. You're always like that. Yeah. You've always liked that.

We've been surprising because, and I repeat, it's in a very good friend. Well, they were very good friends. Not with them, but they were very good friends. The film was, um, showing just eight weeks.

I bet you're surprised at that. Yeah, that took so long. And, um, did you know that Cassandra Peterson began her career as a Vegas showgirl? I did not know.

Is that why there's the whole Vegas storyline in this film? There is, and that's why we get the tassels at the end. Ah, okay. And she actually had a small part as a showgirl in Diamonds F.

River. Oh, no, I'm going to have to look out for that. I think it's a blink and you'll miss it kind of deal, but she's there. I can keep my eyes peeled.

Mm-hmm. Did you know there's a sequel to this movie? I did not know. What's that called?

So the sequel was made in 2001. Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah.

And it's called Elvira's Haunted Hills. And it co-starred Richard O'Brien from Rocky Horror Picture Show. And it was, uh, Peterson as well. Yeah.

We're going back and did it. Okay. Uh, she doesn't look any different. Nice.

But then again, two thousand ones long ago. Have I seen it? Yeah. I own it.

They released it on Blu-ray. Oh, no, no, no. Yeah, what maybe they did, but I'm not going to buy the Blu-ray of that. Oh, oh, so not really a fan, man.

Well, let's just say, of the two movies, this is the Superior One. Okay. Although I do kind of like the second one. It's fun.

And Richard O'Brien's always fun. That is true. Yes. The character of Elvira is still going strong to this day.

Um, there's a current run of comics produced by Dynamite Comics. And it seriously goes for a long time now. And it's had the character interacting with Universal Monsters. The current series that I've just read is HP Lovecraft.

Um, so yeah, this character is still packing them in. Interesting. So with that, let's go take a look at the film itself. Oh, I went so high.

Woo hoo. I'm excited. That's really good. So with that, let's go take a look at the film.

Want to talk tough movies? Here's a superhero with the biggest pair of all. You looking for me? That's your one.

Just walking down the street singing. She's out there. It's a slimy slither. You must concur mine as before.

Yes, she's got it all. She's everything you've ever wanted in a movie. A woman and a casserole. You'll see lots of weird romance.

We'll set perfume here, we're wearing it. Super unleaded. Don't smoke. All the grueling madness.

Smack. Go on. Ew, I hope you change the sheet. Hey, Elvira.

We got a couple more volunteers. Great. Subscribe to our third magazine. A whole gang of awesome monsters.

I will have your fans. I'm fat, you know it. And a few sleazy experiments. There's nothing wrong with you, Red Movies.

Vibers, lots of sex and violence. The charge is witchcraft. Yeah, I've got a new family here. See, Elvira.

Has, Elvira, mistress of the dark. But if they are asking about me, tell them I was more than just a great set of... It's the greatest double feature of all time. We get this black and white B movie opening right?

Which I instantly want you to watch. Oh boy did I, when I watch that and stuff yeah. No that's not true. I'll take that back.

We're in a low budget studio when we get the idea that she introduces movies and about one minute and fifty seconds into this film we get a boob joke which is a minute longer than you usually take. Yeah we know that the boob gags are going to be thick and fast in this rather than the get go don't we? Yes they're going to be ample. Oh very ample very ample.

Yeah. I feel the arthritis going on. Who's he? My uncle.

Oh yeah. Arthritis yeah. Yes. So we get the set up with the she the owner is like a you know he's a bit grabby.

You could say that yes. Yeah yeah and she wants to open up a show in Vegas but those complications she needs to stump up some of the money fifty thousand dollars so she can have her dream show in Las Vegas and she's not going to make that kind of money doing this right? She's not. No.

She's going to need something else. Yeah and because the owner is a little grabby and she knocks him over she quits. Luckily she gets a telegram that her answers pass away in Massachusetts and there's going to be a reading of the will and apparently she's been less something in this will. Yeah and then we get this one of the first times that she breaks the fourth wall so you know Deadpool fans it's not a new thing you know we're going on for a long time.

This Deadpool fans because there's a lot of a problem. I'm one of them right? That's true yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. And we get this weird dream sequence or daydream sequence anyway.

Yeah is that game show right? So you're feeling at this point in the movie? I'm okay it's not the film that I thought we were going to be watching but I'm alright about it. Because you know you chose this for Halloween and you usually choose either some campy 70s British stuff or you choose something horrific.

Yeah I thought I'd go a different way this time you know. Yeah yeah yeah so it's all like and fluffy so far. And she heads off the Massachusetts and we get the opening credits. Yeah we get the entire set up for the movie before the credits and even before the 80s hermeltics in that way.

Yeah it's nothing but succinct we just get straight into it ten minutes boom on him ten minutes right? Yeah yeah and on the way she makes up a hitchhiker. Yeah and he ends up terrified of her. That's true and then he runs up to us right?

She throws an axe up. This guy that she picks up he's one of many cameos from the comedy sketch group that she was in before she was even Elvira. I think they were called the Groundling. Oh okay.

And these cameos are peppered through I think that one of the waitresses is one of them and she kept trying to give them little things to do you know. Right nice it's like me with this podcast right? You give me little things to do. I think he's the other way around but alright go on.

She pulls into a self-serve gas station and the attenders disbulk in and he's picking his nose. He has the kind of work ethic that you have. I was waiting for that. Yeah.

We've got a fat gag as well. We do? Yes. We've never done a fat gag ever week.

We should do one one day. Pretty true and we probably have a fat gag. Have we? Yeah.

I'm not trolling back through your own episodes but I'm pretty true and we've done a fat gag. I suppose so. He doesn't help her and then Elvira accidentally doesn't put the gas nozzle back. Perch will spews out and actually leaves he'll tend to throw his cigarettes on the ground and the place blows up.

Yeah, yeah. That probably took up quite a sizable amount of the budget. Yeah, it's the first big bang of the film. Speaking of big bangs, we also get an inspired moment of cinematography when she goes to Wight, the wintering of her car as well.

What do you mean? I think it's just shot very well. It's kind of like a low angle shot of her cleaning. The angle.

Cleaning from the window. A bit of guddard. Exactly. Yeah.

Alright. Eventually she arrives in the little town of Falwell in Massachusetts. I think if when we were kids, then someone like Elvira rolled into our saxophone. I know that I'd be offering my meager services as a handyman, wouldn't you?

They would be meager. Hey, it is what you want, you've got Colin. You know what I mean? If someone turned up into Wight, looking like Elvira, what do you think would happen?

Give me a round of time. Okay. Just joking. Uh, funnily enough, Falwell, Massachusetts, kind of looks like one of Brofors back lock.

It kind of looked like the town in Back to the Future. It's not? Did you get up? I get what you're coming from because at first I thought, is that Universal Studios and they've tried to cut the clock tower out because that's like, and then I looked at someone of buildings and I was like, oh no, that's one of Brofors.

And then I looked it up and it was confirmed. It's bare back. Is that, have you been there? No, no, I'm not been there.

Do I know it? Yeah, he's definitely the backlock of the studio, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. So he, he, I remember him as the shoe shine guy in police squad. Yeah.

Yes, he is, right. He always gives him the information. That's right. That's the only, that's the only other thing I've ever seen this guy in, it must have with the credits and I'm professional.

We look it up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

It's probably been in every TV show we ever watched for one episode here. Yeah. I'll guarantee I would blame on that if he's been in an episode of Starsking Hot just at that point. Oh, now.

Now, don't you take the time now to look it up and say, yeah, because if I'm wrong, I'll just cut it out. So just let's see yeah, it's true. So let's leave it, yeah. Oh, yeah.

told off for wearing makeup. So we already get an idea of what kind of town this is from these people, right? What was it with the 80s and these towns? You've got this, you've got Dirty Danson, you've also got the Kevin Baker movie, The Dancing One, where one's not like The Dancing The Town, what's that called?

Not Flash Danson, it's the other one, Footloach, that's the one. It seems to be a thing in the 80s, towns where people wouldn't like to do stuff. And there's the one with John Travolta and Kelly Preston where it's supposed to be an American town but really it's a Russian town pretending to be American. Yes, yes, I like that movie.

And I can't remember what it was either but I know I like the experts. That's it, yes. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe it was just a fear of the 80s of, I don't know, could be modern music because you know, rock and stuff have been out for ages and I don't know.

Maybe that's what America was like. And I think as well there's a certain element of this movie, this is kind of like that 1950s movie sci-fi tag, isn't it? That is true, it doesn't feel like a town in the 80s. No, well I mean all the kids are dressed like at the 80s but all the grown-ups.

But yeah, yeah, like it's in the attitudes. Yeah, right, right. Yeah, that would make sense. It's like the blob or something.

Yeah. So she got to bowling alley because apparently that's the only place where anything happens. And then she's hit on by two guys. Yeah, this guy reading the Spider-Man comic pretty much nails your view of comic book people, right?

In fact, he kind of believes it's real when he's reading it. Yeah, I mean when you say comic book people, you mean you, right? Specifically. Takes it far too seriously.

Yes, I suppose. I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't think I do that.

90% of our conversations is you talking about some, what's happening with DC and Mavore? I'll give you that. That was our lead up. It's one of the brothers thing that I know nothing about.

Before we started recording, we took a lot about that. Yeah, it was mostly me. Yeah, so. Yeah.

I'll give you that. And the other attitudes of this guy are just like you as well. What does that mean by that color? It's aginistic and violent.

Wow. All right. We'll just go up this. Let's just remind our listeners that we're playing characters on this show.

Okay. That's what we always say, right? Characters. One of us is.

Yeah, yeah. Thank you. No, that makes it. Yeah, yeah.

The problem is, yeah, no, no, no. Unfortunately, you go method. Is there any other way? No, that's why we used to call you Marilyn, right?

Exactly. Me and Stan Zilowski. Like that we were brothers. Oh, okay.

Yeah. Can't even say it's April. No, I can, but I did my best. I tried.

It was good. It was good. I did win when the guy ripped the comic book in half. I did that.

Who's thinking how much is that worth now? I looked it up. Was it real comic book? Oh, yes.

The real Spiderman comics. Yeah, and it's worth a bit. That one. Is that?

Mm-hmm. And you know that that was probably multiple takes. They probably ripped a few off. That was my disappointment.

It's very, very similar to what I was saying. It is. It really is. There again disappointed, you know, used to it.

Yeah, it's true. Yeah. It's usually the other person who makes that disappointment. Very quick.

Yes, I know. Yeah. One of these guys, Travis, he's played by Jeff Conway. He was probably best known for Knicki in Greece.

Great. Is that sounds like a disease? No, no, no, it was a character. He had a troubled life though.

Oh, we're going to tell us about his troubled life. Well, let's just say you know, a life full of addiction and then he died at the age of 60 in 2011. At the age of 60. Well, it's not that young.

I thought he was going to tell me that he was 25 and drove his car off a cliff. He's about 40 in this. So, got to go back in time. That's how fast he was driving.

Well, it was sad. I thought it was sad. Sad to do is addiction and die at 60. I mean, we could do a whole podcast about sadness and activism.

Think about how many actors we know that are huge and then they end up in some nursing home and they die on no. Well, this is talking to her, doesn't it? Wow. You want to go down this road?

Jesus. All right. Back to World Mario. Back to World Mario.

That's how it is. I'm going dark. I'm dark Halloween. I did like the exchange.

Do you want the Virgin? Maybe. I'll have a couple of drinks first. I thought that was a good one.

Yeah. There are actually a lot of good innuendal lines in this film. As I said, carry on moving. Yeah.

I can see your point. None of the characters to be a carry on film, but I see your point. The tone of it. The tone of it is carry on.

Yeah. We get that 86-petery scene, don't we? Your favorite. He does handle it brilliantly.

She does. She does. She posse me her over and makes a few jokes about them. She does.

She cuts them down to size. Exactly. A guy that she was looking at earlier called Bob. He steps in and helps and knocks him out.

Yeah. There was something about when he says, I didn't want to bore you. She said, go ahead. Boring me.

Something about the way she says that line. Wow. Do you want to leave that there? Hang on.

I'm going to figure it could just leave and you could just carry on. I feel like you need to be alone right now. No, no. I can wait.

Yeah. Sure. Yeah. We should point out that Bob has a girlfriend called Patti.
