#142 Winston Hong

from Johnny Yaps · host Johnny Yap

In this episode, I sit down with 'Asian Street Jesus' aka Winston Hong, a fairly noticeable guy if you've ever been to the Sydney Jiu Jitsu comps. Winston and I actually have some common friends so it was great to finally sit down and chat. From growing up in Singapore and the expectations of Asian parents, through to leaving a potential career in Engineering to pursue Jiu Jitsu, Winston was really bitten by the Jiu Jitsu bug and found a way to make ends meet through doing additional hours with side gigs and refereeing. We also talk about his experience in Military Service (which is mandatory in Singapore) and his serendipitous experience of finding someone who was involved in a psyche study at University. We also talk about his mindset of competing and his approach to coaching, pizza making and much more, enjoy! I realised when I listened back to this episode I mentioned me running from Serangoon to Bishan, it was actually from Serangoon to Ang Mo Kio (a little bit closer 😅) my recollection was off oops! PPS. I missed mentioning a couple of other training partners when Winston was asking me about my martial arts background, so sorry! You guys know who you are though and I'm so grateful to have spent time with you all on the mats! 🙏
