#143 How to hype yourself with Lucy Werner

from The Unconventionalists with Mark Leruste · host Mark Leruste

Unlike TV advertising, PR is suitable for everybody and you don’t need a huge budget to be able to execute it. But unlike what social media gurus would have you believe, there’s a whole bunch of work you need to do before you should put yourself out there. That’s where Lucy Werner comes in. Lucy Werner is the founder of The Wern, an award-winning communications consultancy for startups, entrepreneurs and independents and is the author of the book: “Hype Yourself: A non-nonsense PR toolkit for small businesses”. “You don’t need another self-help book for your business, you need a hype-yourself book.” - Lucy Werner Lucy launched her business The Wern in 2015 after being completely disillusioned by how traditional agencies weren’t servicing the independents in the way they needed. As you will hear in this week’s powerful conversation, Lucy went from making only £500 in her first month, being worried how she would pay her bills, to making £10,000 on her third month, building a team and eventually winning the FSB Micro-Business Award. After trying to read books on PR and realising that the vast majority of the books out there were written by mostly ex journalist men turned PR consultants, she thought there was a gap in the market for a good book written by woman with an extensive background in PR. Hype Yourself was launched and a #HypeYourself revolution was born. The Wern’s creative director, Hadrien Chatelet also happens to be the Co-Founder of Lucy’s children. So naturally we got into juicy topics such as what is it really like to run a business with your partner.  In this episode you will learn: What it takes to write a ground breaking bingeable book The difference between selling and sharing How to build connections and bridges with your audience from day one The most important question you must ask yourself before investing in doing any PR Challenges and rewards of running a business as a parent How to become more visible in your industry The importance of branding and why you should care All the links mentioned in this week's episode as well as all the show notes can be found over at https://theunconventionalists.com/episode143 As always I'd love to hear your biggest takeaway and any follow up questions you might have after listening to our powerful conversation, so please tag me @markleruste or drop me a DM. I can't wait to hear from you, Mark
