Twenty five years ago today our world changed forever. Episode 144 of Useless Assumptions opens with a moment of reflection for September 11 2001 . We want to take a moment to honor every first responder who ran toward the towers and every man and woman in uniform who answered the call in the years that followed. We will never forget what happened on that day and we will never forget the people who gave everything. If you were alive on September 11 2001 you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news. This episode starts there.We also take a moment on this episode to pay tribute to Charlie Kirk. Then we get into the show.Nebraska football is back and it looked good. The Huskers beat Ohio 49-21 in the season opener at Memorial Stadium in front of 85,000 fans in 91 degree heat. New quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns and ran for one more. Freshman Jamal Rule rushed for 122 yards and scored three times becoming the first Nebraska freshman running back to rush for 100 yards in an opener since 2004. We break down the game and talk about what we actually saw.The NFL season is officially underway. The defending champion Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 13-10 in the Wednesday night opener but lost starting quarterback Sam Darnold to a hip injury on the very first drive of the season. Drew Lock finished the game and won it. Drake Maye threw a costly interception. A.J. Brown made his Patriots debut and got hurt. The foreperson said the holdout admitted he had reasonable doubt and then refused to apply it anyway. The defense attorney said the jury was robbed by one man. We lay out everything the jurors said and what happens next.An Amazon cargo jet ran off the runway at Miami International Airport this week and the NTSB is investigating.Trump promised every American adult a five thousand dollar dividend check if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in November. No funding source was described. We talk about what that actually means.And Utah Republican Governor Spencer Cox went on The Daily Show and said something that is worth discussing. He said four times as many Americans have now lost a friend or family member over politics and that politics has become a religion replacing the faith communities and civic organizations that once held this country together.
