The Persian Empire just conquered Babylon, and King Cyrus the Great did something unusual—he let conquered peoples go back to their homelands and rebuild their temples. For the Jews, this meant going home after seventy years in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple back in 587 BC.
