#147 Tarr - Wyndham Lewis
from Book Club From Hell · host Levi MK and Jack BC
Wyndham Lewis was a 20th-century painter and writer, famous for his involvement in the Vorticist movement, his constant feuds with just about everyone who tried to help him, his acidic satire, explosive political tracts, and for calling Adolf Hitler 'a man of peace'. I think he should be a lot more famous for his novels, such as the topic of today's episode: Tarr, first published in 1918 (rushed as Lewis was afraid that he would be killed in WWI and fail to leave behind a novel) and rerelased with significant revisions in 1928. It is aggressively 20th-century Modernist (untranslated foreign languages, dense prose, deeply allusive, bleak, bitter) and screamingly funny.Capitalisimo couldn't make it to this episode, but never fear! Friend of the show Gabriel Sinclair stepped both up and in to fill Cap's gigantic shoes! That means Spengler, autism, chittering laughter, autism, descriptions of things as 'Faustian', autism...
