This research identifies a critical connection between peripheral nerves and skin aging, revealing that glutamatergic neurons directly regulate the health of the dermis. The study demonstrates that a decline in neurofilament heavy chain (Nefh) within these nerves leads to reduced glutamate release, which subsequently triggers fibroblast senescence and a loss of collagen. Scientists discovered that the Nefh-Cdk5 axis is the essential mechanism governing this neurotransmitter activity, while the transporter Slc1a3 allows skin fibroblasts to receive anti-aging signals.
