15. Beshalach: With The Help Of Pharaoh ~Being Helped By A Transformed Enemy
from The Jewish Mind · host Rabbi Avrohom Lipszyc
"And with a mighty hand he [Pharaoh] will drive them out of his land," -Exodus 6:1 "Against Israel’s will he will drive them out, and they will not have time to make provisions for themselves, and so He says, ‘And the Egyptians pressed the people strongly...’ " -Rashi ibid "One out of five [Israelites] went out, and four fifths [lit., parts of the people] died during the three days of darkness." (-Rashi; Exodus 13:18) And the last fifth didn't want to leave either, and had to be forced out by Pharaoh! After Pharaoh and his kingdom were broken by the Ten Plagues, was he really in any position to force the Jewish people out of Egypt without provisions for their journey?! In greater depths, how can any evil exist in G-d's world? What is the ultimate purpose of the existence of evil, beyond its offering us Freedom of Choice to choose between good and evil? Finally, why did the Jewish people not want to leave Egypt, and needed Pharaoh to forcefully send them out of Egypt?
