In today's episode, we're talking about 15 plus best gifts to give this holiday season. Let's get started. In the title for the episode, I told you that it's dealing with holiday gift giving. However, gift giving is an issue year round.
There is always some occasion that we are looking to buy a gift for somebody. It's Christmas, a birthday, a graduation, a baby shower. Just congratulations for doing something great at work or just because we're friends. So don't look at this as a Christmas thing.
This is a gift giving thing. I've got some tips and tricks and even some suggestions for you as do the types of gifts. And for the most part, I'm going to be talking about gifts to give a female because I am one and I'm an expert at it. But don't get me wrong.
We may not agree on some of the topics, some of the recommendations that I may give. And I'm even going to be talking about some things not to give people. And you may be completely opposite of me and be like, no, those are great ideas. And that's perfectly fine because we can agree to disagree.
There's certain things that I'm just kind of like, eh, now mind you, I'm all about being grateful. If you thought enough to get me a gift, then yay, I love it. But once I get that thing, is it going to be useful? Am I going to be able to use it?
Or is it just adding to the weight of my house? And that's where we kind of want to come up with these really good ideas for people as gifts just so that it's not something sitting around and you're kind of like, eh, you know, you want to be like, whoo, when you get this gift, right? Okay. So we're going to talk about some things.
And I said 15 plus because I kind of sort of counted, but I kind of sort of didn't. And because I gave things not to get and I was just kind of all over the place. So take it for what it is. If you want to listen to the episode over and over again and try to count the number of things that I said, you know what?
Knock yourself out. If that's what you're going to do with your free time, I'm going to give you this information and hopefully it's going to help you in any situation when you're trying to buy some gifts for someone. Let me start off by saying I am not a professional gift giver. Although I've been doing it for quite some time.
There are some people out there that just have a knack for getting the perfect gift. And that's not necessarily me all the time because sometimes I do go get those gifts. I'm like, you know what? It's something.
And I keep it moving. But for this particular episode, I'm going to do my best to give you the best advice as far as gift giving. And you can agree to disagree with me. That's perfectly fine.
However, I'm going to start with the most important part of getting a gift. And that is knowing the person that you're buying the gift for. If you don't really know this person, then don't go all out of your way trying to get the biggest and the best and the greatest gift for them. Because if you don't really know them, if you don't know the things that they like or the things that they appreciate, then it's going to be very difficult.
Now unless this is a person that is really big into name brands and the price tag on things, then that person is going to be easy to buy a gift for because you just go for the thing with the biggest price tag and the most popular name. You get them some red bottoms. You get them some, you know, some anything that's super expensive. And they're going to love it.
However, we're not talking about those people in this episode. So starting off, you have to know the person that you're buying a gift for. Let's say that you just started dating this person. And consider something not so extravagant, not so, like don't try to go out for a person if you're new in a relationship.
You can give them something basic, like a pampering type thing. Get them a gift certificate to a place. Get them something that says, hey, I'm thinking about you. I care about you.
But I don't really know you that well. One other thing in a situation like that is you have to know your breakup budget. What is your breakup budget? Now you might be asking what is a breakup budget?
Well, a breakup budget is the amount of money that you would be okay with losing if this person decided to break up with you tomorrow. So they're with you today. They get the gift from you. They break up with you tomorrow.
Are you cool with the fact that you gave them that gift at whatever price point that it was at? If so, then you're good. You want to stay within that breakup budget when you're getting a gift for that person that you don't quite know all that well. So you could go all out and get them a bracelet or a necklace or something like that if that's what was moving you.
But just know if it is not within that breakup budget. Do not get mad. So ask them for your stuff back because that's just plain old tacky. Do not.
Don't do it. Figure out something else to get them. Okay. Now while I'm on that section I want to talk about five things not to buy.
I should say me but I'm going to say not to buy a female. These are five things that I think are a definite no no. Number one do not buy a gym membership for a female because we get the thinking we are thinking all the time and if you buy a female a gym membership then that gift is going to be looked at as if you're trying to tell them something. Oh are you saying that I'm bad.
I don't care if I mentioned joining the gym the gym 50 times over don't buy a gym membership because that is actually one of those things that the person has to be ready to take that step. It's going to be a waste of money just like when people make their new year's resolutions money wasted because they did a whole lot of talking about they're going to turn over a new leaf they don't work out every day and the only thing they did was hand the gym that money and was like yeah I'd rather go get a snack instead. So one do not buy a gym membership. Number two don't buy clothes if you don't know the correct size to get for the person because once again if we're talking females we get to thinking and if you get me an extra large and I'm a medium I'm wondering what do you see when you see me do I look like an extra large to you.
So if you are not aware of what size that they're wearing don't do it. Now you can always go snooping in a closet if you have access to their home but I wouldn't even go there don't do it. Third thing home decor items throw pillows artwork for the wall stuff like that don't waste your money. Home decorating is very personal.
People want their home to resonate with them not with you. You might see something like oh this would look great on the wall in so and so's house well they might not feel that way that might not be their jam they're not feeling that picture it's not bringing any type of good vibes into their into their space so don't even consider it and just home home decor items I think is a bad idea. Unless you're married and that that's more of a we've looked at this thing I'm going to get it but even in that situation I would not buy it for a person if you do that buy it for the house for some other occasion but don't give it to me as a gift as it's been something for me when it's really for the wall for the house for everybody to enjoy. Simple as that.
Okay what was that number three number four household items such as back and cleaners pots and pans a crock pot a rice cooker no thanks for a situation like that if you feel the need especially if you're married if the person is single they don't live with you you might be able to get away with that because they're going to be the ones using that for themselves. However if you're married and your significant other gets you a set of pots go ahead and scratch your name off of the two section and put the house on there because that is something that's going to benefit everyone in the house that is not for you and really that's just like saying you need to cook more you need to vacuum the house more you know no no no no keep that one to yourself and last but not least don't get items that are too practical so I did that once I was dating a guy and he was talking about changing his eating regimen and was saying that he would even consider doing veggie burgers but he talked about this for so long and I'm like you know he is not going to pull the trigger he's not going to do it he's not going to buy veggie burgers to even try him here's what I'm going to do I am going to get him some veggie burgers now they it wasn't like I took him out to a restaurant and had him drive a veggie burger I actually bought him some veggie burger patties I think it was his birthday and that gift was so not appreciated he thought that was the worst gift in the world and honestly I felt like he should have appreciated that but when I look back on it I realize you know that was a sucky gift and I was wrong for that I should not have gotten him veggie patties and it wasn't even like I got him a box of them like you know a hundred patties or anything this was just a regular box it might have had eight to twelve patties in it nothing too major but yeah so try not to go too practical because you will shoot yourself in the foot without one all right we're almost at the meat and potatoes but there's one more thing that I want to mention to you if you are superstitious don't get those things that those superstitions are floating out there around because you're gonna be in your head about the gift that you gave to a person and you're going to be wondering if that bad luck thing is going to happen to you and if you look for something long enough and hard enough you're gonna find it so no matter what say you buy them a pair of shoes and a little superstition around that is that if you buy someone's shoes then they'll walk out on you they'll leave you right so then if you're in your head about this thing and when they finally do leave you what are you gonna say oh man I shouldn't bought them the shoes and it had nothing to do with the shoes but if you look hard enough you're gonna find it some other superstition type things if you buy a person to watch that means that time is gonna run out on your relationship and if you buy them scissors or a knife then it's gonna cut the relationship it's gonna cut it in half it's gonna sever the two and you're gonna be looking for a new person to give them gifts right so those are a couple of things if you are superstitious don't even go there with yourself because you're gonna be in your head about that gift for eternity until whatever the thing was it said happens and then you'll be satisfied with yourself that oh man see I knew I shouldn't have done that because I knew this was gonna happen alright so on to the gifts on to the gifts for my younger kids you know up to maybe middle school or up through middle school you guys are still cute and adorable so let that cuteness and endorableness work for you focus on doing handmade gifts paint a picture draw a picture color a picture make some type of macaroni bracelet with painted macaroni noodles or whatever you can still get away with that don't feel like you have to go above and beyond the call of duty now once again this is for females so dads if you're out there here's the thing for you take time with your child to come up with a thing to make for their mom because nine times out of ten unless they're making it at school and bringing it home to mom it's not gonna happen so dads I'm charging you to take the time out to spend some time with your little get together with them you don't even have to come up with the idea Pinterest has all the ideas you just do a search on Pinterest for gifts for mom handmade gifts for mom that sort of thing come up with an idea let the kids see get some buy in from them because if there's no buy in from them you're gonna be the one doing the project and those types of gifts mean the most I have a picture and it's a gift I gave to myself my daughter drew this one picture and I thought it was so pretty that I got it blown up to like wall hanging size and I absolutely love it and she probably didn't realize what she was doing but that is like one of the best gifts I've given to myself is that picture that she drew so little ones you guys still got it made now dads you can still give them money but know that you're gonna have to go take them and everything so why not why go through all that put their name on the gift that you get for your spouse and call it a day now if you're in high school nine times out of ten you may have access to a car you may have a job and if that's the case you need to be planning throughout the year take 10% out of your allowance or your check from work and use that once whatever the event is that you're buying a gift for use that money to then buy a gift now we all know that teenagers can be a little interesting so my top gifts for you would be a gift certificate for your mom to get like a mani petty or a massage I'm all about pictures y'all so a desk picture you go you take a selfie with your mom from a fun day a fun situation or whatever don't just run up on a machine looking cute make sure she's looking nice y'all having a good time take a selfie take that selfie go to CVS wall grains or whatever get it blown up to whatever size frame you want them to put on their desk get it framed and everything and you have a great gift and you can even use some of these different phone apps that will give you maybe a painted type result on the picture versus just a regular you know get a little fancy with it and those types of gifts once again are the greatest because while I'm at work I can sit and look on my desk and see this picture of me and my little mini me and we're having a good time and it's just like oh that just touches my heart now another thing that you could get would be perfume now I'm not a big fan of perfume as a gift because to me the little spray that you make a little spritz of of cologne or perfume that you put on is next to nothing coming out of that container so unless you're using it all day every day multiple times a day it's going to take a long time to get through the perfume so if you do give perfume as a gift don't let it be a regular thing let it be an every now and then thing like every couple of years and whatnot and if you do don't go to Avon route now Avon sellers I'm not saying anything about you or your products because I saw some cologne that you had for $1,200 and I was like oh excuse me Avon I had no idea but what I am saying is because there's not a store for me to go and smell the Avon perfumes I really don't know what I'm getting for you if I go and get a perfume from there so go to one of these department type stores where they have the makeup counters and actually sample the perfume make sure that it's something nice and smells good my only thing about perfume though as a gift is that the chemistry of a person's body can make the perfume's no great or not so great and that's the kind of iffy part about it so I would that wouldn't be my top choice but as a high schooler I think that you can get away with it because moms usually love just about anything you do to show that you were thinking of them now some other gifts let's see a foot massager however you have to take time out to do that so if a husband is getting a foot massager for a wife make sure that you might have to be the first one to get her to use it you might have to set it up one night and pour a glass of wine and be like hey come here put your feet in here here's some wine I'm gonna give you a peta care type thing you may have to do that to get her into the swing of using it regularly because a lot of times we don't stop to take care of ourselves speaking of that self care items whether it is a plush robe or the night mask some type of luxurious lotions or oils and that type of thing anything self care I think is a definite go makeup is okay especially if you're the spouse and you're right there and you can look through the makeup containers and see what maybe you're almost out of or whatever but to me makeup is kind of like perfume it lasts for a pretty long time even though there is like an expiration date on it a lot of women don't go by that you should but a lot of us don't you know you use it until it's gone and then you go get more let's see what else what else makeup jewelry jewelry is great especially if this is like a dating situation bracelets name necklaces that type of thing I actually saw one it's a very delicate name type necklace by oak and Luna I thought it was really nice like very classy it yeah I really like that one let's see what else another one for people who are dating air pod cases if you have air pods I can't do air pods because they're entirely too small and I know I would lose them even if I had an air pod case I don't know that it would help me to keep up with them any better because from being in my ear unless this thing is hooked on my waist and I put it in there as soon as I'm done yeah I don't know that's gonna work I don't see that though as a gift to a spouse unless it's in a basket of other things don't just get me an air pod case and I think they were gonna be cool because we're not gonna be looking at this like really okay just saying right what else what else what else wine of the month club I think this is another good one for singles because if I live at home by myself and you buy me a wine gift club membership then guess what those wines are coming to me and I get to choose how I share the wine with everyone else however if we're married and you get me a wine of the month membership I'm looking at it sideways because I'm like this to me is like buying me a pot this is for everybody in the house they can drink wine this isn't for me in particular so yeah don't do that for your spouse unless y'all have a thing where that's the type of thing that y'all do together but even still if that's the case and that should be like a Valentine's gift to the couple to us and not necessarily a gift to you that we are gonna use alright let's see other things five minute journal if you want your significant other to try to take more time for themselves however you kind of have to make sure that they have the time to do that sort of thing even though a five minute journal should not be it shouldn't take a whole lot of their time sometimes for some people to give five minutes is a lot but then the other thing too is don't just give the journal by itself make that a part of a gift basket of things don't don't just give somebody a journal and say here you go no not gonna work make a pen with it put it in a basket with some other similar items so that there's like a theme around it and I think that'll be a winner I saw this other thing called little words projects bracelets and you have to look that one up because I thought they were really cute although they did look like something that you could probably make for yourself make on your own so this might be a good thing for your kids to make for mom but if you look it up once again it's little words projects bracelets work out gear I think is okay so the actual gym membership not so much but y'all go pans and stuff like that you know we tend to wear that just about everywhere so that's not a bad idea to get especially if it's kind of sexy yeah that kind of builds up the self confidence the self esteem and although you're wearing it around the house you're feeling good about yourself as you're walking around the house in it one other thing would be a type of purse but make sure you put money in it because that's another one of those superstitious type things that if you give somebody an empty wallet or an empty purse then they're gonna end up being broke so put a penny in it you know any denomination of money works I'm sure they would prefer something that flaps in the wind but if you tips here one make sure you check the latest shipping deadlines to make sure that your gifts arrive on time especially if you're doing this holiday season because we all know that the mail system gets backed up so you want to make sure that your gifts get there in time for Christmas or Hanukkah, Quanz or whatever it is that you're trying to make sure you get those gifts sent for and also another thing that I am really big on is looking for brands when I say brands I don't mean brand name but I like looking for women owned stores or black owned stores anything whatever your brand focus is then I say look to them first and find the gifts that fall into whatever their niche is find the gifts for your friends that go along with that and that way you can support small business you can support women you can support minorities you can support whatever that brand is that you're focusing on for now and in doing that you may not be able to get all the gifts that you have on your shopping list but you could definitely get a good bit of them and you're helping the economy and small businesses to grow but we have to remember that that is going to take time you're gonna have to stop and take time to look for the gifts to be able to order them to get them out so once again we all know you make time for the things that you want to make time for so you should want to set aside some time to
