150. KITT Bashing

from Retrospection Hosted by Colin and Paul

It’s our 150th episode and we’re celebrating by returning to the show we did in our very first episode, Knight Rider (1982-86). This time we’re looking at the second season two-parter, Goliath. Along the way, Paul reveals what he keeps under his car seat, Colin tries some mental mind reading and we both remember our brass instrument fingering.

Hello and welcome to Retrospection. Well, it's been a long round getting from there to here. Oh god, here we go. This is episode 1500!

I say what? Oh, sorry, it just feels like it. I mean 150. Is that closer to your age, Colin?

Which, no, 1500 is actually closer to my real age. I thought it might be, yeah. Yeah. And as a special treat for somebody, we're returning to the show that featured in episode 1.

Night Rider from 1982 R to use its Jeffrey Chasse title, Pinniktrida. We've got a classic here. Classic, classic call, I should say. Classic call, yes.

Yeah. What you was our very first episode, Colin? Can you remember? Absolutely.

100% not. 2016. How come, like, those podcasts have only been done for like a year or two, and they're already on 150? It's taken us.

Ah, well, you see, we've sacrificed... Oh, virgins? Not yet, not yet. We've sacrificed being prolific for quality, you see.

Did we? Did we? When did that happen? What episode was that?

That, I'll tell you exactly when it happened. It happened when you decided, or I'd say I decided, one of us decided that, you know what, point one out every two weeks was fucking annoying, so we decided to do it every three weeks. Okay. And then, of course, someone used to constantly take time off from the podcast and go on holiday.

I said, I don't know. This is a celebration. I'm getting angry at that. I mean, I don't remember you taking holidays.

No, I didn't. No. No. Every time I've had from the show has been for legitimate reasons, not holiday, just, you know, mental breakdowns from being a you.

Well, yeah, that's very enough. Yeah. Yeah. You have to re-charge the old batteries.

I wonder what you're going to say then? You have to re-charge everything. Re-charge kit. Yes.

That's a name. If I could see it. So this time, we're looking at the feature-length episode, later split into two for syndication. What's it called, Colin?

Goliath. Yeah. So this episode kicked off the second season of Dactorider. Yes, it was a special event, wasn't it?

It is where we get two hassle-huffs for the price of one. You know what, if this was made today, it would be like a multiverse, wouldn't it? You'd have huffs coming out of every corner. Oh, don't like the sound of that.

What is a collection of hassle-huffs? A hard to hassle-huffs? I would say it's annoying. Annoying.

A belina of hassle-huffs. Oh, yeah, they love him, they don't know. They do, yeah. Get into my car.

You've said that a few times with a creak away, a packet of sweets? No, no, Colin. You want to be some? Just want to be some.

Is it? Yeah. Get into my car. That one.

Oh, it's nice. No, no, no, no. Leave it to me. So my name's Colin, and when I want something from a man, he knows it.

Never a true word was spoken there, Colin, eh? And my name's Paul, and without me, you'd still be in the bush. Oh, I dream of the bush. I mean, off Earth before we started this, we were discussing the life force.

Oh, yeah, yeah. That's right, yeah. TV, DB, so it's Michael and Kit's battle. A Kit-like truck.

Not really a Kit-like truck. It's nothing like a Kit-like truck. No. It doesn't talk.

No. No, it's not. We've got a supercomputer in it. It's not sentient like Kit.

There's another nice red LED, actually, that was on the front. That's a mistake, isn't it? That is a mistake. That is a mistake.

And one of many, which doesn't make this... I'm going to mention another episode of Nirad, which I think is better than this. Oh, another episode? We should have done.

We should have done quicker. You would have done quicker. There's something in one part of it. Yeah, yeah.

You know what I'm referring to as well. Oh, maybe. So it's built by Wilton Knight's ex-wife and son. I don't think the ex-wife did but she's building here.

Not really. No, no, no. This episode's there as David, has a lot of Michael Knight and Garth. Given the clue away there, I think.

You reckon? Edward Mulher's Devin Miles, Rebecca Holden as April Curtis, and Berber Rush as Elizabeth Knight. And of course, William Daniels provides the voice of Kit. So, do you want to talk about his performance as Garth?

No, I won't show. No, I won't. Yeah, let's talk when we get to his walk. Directed by Winrich Kolbe, I'm not sure, but the last name of prolific TV director, especially in the Sturtruck universe.

Yeah, he's definitely one of those. You know, we've used this phrase before, but he's dependable. He's a journeyman, director, isn't he? Yeah, he's an interview.

This episode is in October, 1983 in the USA. And I have a listing for it in the UK on the ITV network, 10s for the 17th of November, 1983. So only a month later. I guarantee we probably would have watched it.

I don't know, 6.50pm on a first date just before Miss World. We were only nine, Colin. Yeah, BBC had Angels, a hospital based soap opera. We wouldn't be watching that.

No, we wouldn't know. Followed by Tomorrow's World, and then top of the pops, but let's not mention it a host was that day. Let's just say it's never going to be seen again. Could be anyone though.

Could be because of Narrow it down, doesn't it? No, that's all right. Let me narrow it down for you. Jangle the angle.

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. But before we get into the episode, I've been listening to a really great podcast. Oh, oh, a podcast? Oh, you're so funny.

No, it's called CD BIMCO. Oh, what's that? Well, let them tell you. I'm George O'Connor, the New York Times bestselling author of the Olympians and Asgardians.

I'm Tim Hamilton, Cartoonist for The New York. Here at Steady BIMCO, we watch movies of dubious quality and fabricate revenge sequels for them that they never had before. We also have fun games such as George's current currency burner. Diapers in 1960 cost $1.

What do you think they would cost to date, Tim? $4. Say BIMCO, part 2, the revenge. Everyone's day.

Any place. You listen to podcasts. See? I told you it was good.

Yeah, that sounds really fun. I'm going to have to get that. Listen to me. Yeah.

Show with me and our listener. Well, I thought as soon as we've already talked about it, I'm not going to get into the show because if you want to hear that, then don't govern this into the first episode. We have good luck. I'll do that.

But a couple of things I did read about this episode was I found that David Hasselhoff went on record at the time of saying that when he was playing his evil twin in quotation marks. Not his twin, but yeah. He thought that he was probably never going to work again. Well, it was partially true.

I mean, he did Baywatch, I suppose. Yeah, he's got two huge shows on his belt. That's about the most people. That belt was expanding.

Did he explain why? I think he just thought that it was really over the top and very camping. I mean, it was, but I think it has to be. Oh, definitely because it's completely different than what he does as Michael Knight.

Yeah. It's very naturalistic, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah.

When he's playing golf, he's active. Well, funnily enough, he's dad at the time. Remark to him that the evil twin was a better actor than Michael Knight. Oh, it was the parents of being critics.

I remember the things you had that said about you. Exactly. That's what I was just going to say. I was thinking the same thing.

Let's mention the elephant in the room. I'm sure we're going to mention it again, not that I'm calling Christian McPherson, an elephant behind me, but she is absent from this episode. Bonnie is nowhere to be seen. Yes.

We could April instead of Bonnie. No, this was because of the shared disagreements with the producers. Right. But eventually, because Hausloff liked us so much, I think everyone heard it too.

They actually petitioned to get her back. Yeah. And there was a fan campaign as well behind it, which they kind of joined in with. So you were Bonnie Fannner in April?

No. Now, Bonnie is the more interesting character, I think. I don't have anything against April. Don't look at me like that.

But, all it is, is what she said. But April's kind of bland as a character, isn't she? And you can see in these two parts that they keep messing with her look a little bit because they can't quite nail it down what they want her to be. Yeah.

Suck it up, Gullen. I'm feeding you these lines. I know. Very well.

Most of what I'm going to say would be edited out anyway. This is true. This is true. I could leave it in.

You don't know. That's why I'm not saying it, Paul. You never check them. I could leave it in anything.

No, that's why I'm censoring myself. Right. Okay. There's a shot of the US government building that they're using this two power is actually the same building used in six million dollar man and violent woman.

It's like that fact. That's good. And if you look really closely in one of the montage shots of them building Gar, one of the people. Well, well, well, building who?

Well, building Gar, building Goliath. It's a changeable. I'm going to give up. I love it.

Gluing Goliath's mustache. Oh, you imagine he'd love it. You what? Yeah.

In burger fry oil. That's very specific. Yeah. Burger fry oil oil.

Yeah. Five guys. I don't want to take free of fire. Ah, professional.

No, if you look really, really closely in one of these montages, they're using a tricorder prop from Star Trek to the Ratchet card. Now, is this a fact you read or is this something you actually viewed and went, oh, I read it. And then I watched very, very, very closely. And you can actually see it.

You think back to the tricorders of these huge brick things that they carry that look like, they look like drills, drill guns with a back on and they're like square and they hold them like guns and point them. It's the same crop. The exact same crop. Yeah.

I guess it's handled a lot. I mean, at least it's not those three or two or three beams of light. The two, the two, the two, the two, the two, the two, the two, the two, the two, the pop up and everything. I'm surprised that didn't show up.

He must do some point in the series. He's got to be in the truck. He's got to be in the truck. Yeah.

Yeah. And that's all I could glean from the internet for this. I'm going to the episode and I'll throw it off with the pants. They were never on calling.

Live free, live easy, right? We all put in a desert. A little man off a camera makes his way to what looks like some kind of base or a storage sensor where you keep those beres as you don't really like. We don't see deserts much in TV shows these days.

No, I wonder why that is. I don't know. I mean, back then everything was filmed in Los Angeles. So it's easy to go to California and film and everything's gone in Canada.

Yeah. Maybe that's the reason. I have to say that when it started and I saw this guy climb over the rocks and in the desert. I was quoting for Taylor to come out, being chased by Apes on horseback.

He looked like something from Planet of the Apes. Right? Yeah. Yeah.

Before this though, I have to say that the other credits this show get me every time. I'm instantly a kid again. Every time I see these credits, so I hear this thing too. Yes.

Yeah. Earwalls the same way, right? Oh, they all around the earwolf the 18 street hog while maybe not street hog. Well, hear anything bad about street hog?

No, no, no, no. Yeah. You know, I like it. Yeah.

A little more arrives and a man in a suit with Kane turns up. We don't see his head. I mean, he has one though. I'm pretty sure about that.

Yeah. They make a point of not showing his head, don't they? So we know what's coming. Yeah.

Yeah. Inside a man working on something and wearing military uniforms. But the guy spotted taking pictures of the suit about a piece and shoots him of his cane. He looks like Michael Nate, the face of a puzzle half.

What a suit. You like that suit? First of many great outfits that he was in this episode. Yeah.

Yeah. One in particular layer. Perfect. Oh, I might do.

Yeah. I might do the subscribe. I can see you down the Reading Town Centre. Would you have a cane?

Oh, I could have a cane. Yeah. You've got a cane. It completes the look.

It will be silly without it. Yeah. Yeah. And I might have to start doing the voice.

The voice. The voice that he does later as Garth is. It's a proper performance. Okay.

Rat fans, strap in. Do the voice. What would you like me to say? Oh.

Give me a line. Give me a line. Okay. Okay.

Carlin, you're the sexiest thing I've seen. Go on. Give me a line. Give me a line.

Okay. I hate you, Michael. I hate you so much. Okay.

All right. Second audition. Yeah. Yeah.

And you're on time. I've got a picture. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. I'm squeaky voice. No. I'm here.

I hate you, Michael. I hate you so much. Lovely. We won't call you right now.

We've got a lot of people to see. You're calling me right. You're going to call me right. We're going to talk about it between ourselves.

Yeah. A lot of people. We've got Michael Sheen. He's a hack.

He's a hack. Well, you know, maybe the new doctor. We want to get him before he does that. I'm up for that as well.

I'm doing the same voice. Can you imagine that? I'm the doctor. It's bigger on the inside.

Hey. Cariol. Yeah. Yeah.

So you've got to call me right? Yeah. Yeah. I'll wait by the phone.

Do that. What year is this? It would be eighties, wouldn't it? Because I think I'll wait by my phone.

I can't have my phone in my pocket, but it's 90 degrees. Yeah. Yeah. So it's a land line.

Yeah. So it's a little bit more than it. Oh, so you've got to run down the actual mum. So wait, so I've auditioned as a nine-year-old?

It's a really new version of Knight Rider. Oh, right. Okay. Good work.

Good. Yeah. Michael Knight, the early years. Yeah.

There we go. And it's on the list. Really what? Don't want to do the later years.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't just stay away from bogey joints. We're fine. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So we got to Michael and Kit.

He's trying to convince Kit that gambling is good and is explaining the rules of Blackjack. We see it on his screen, but let's be honest. Who's filming this video? Who's filming this video called?

The camera's moving? It's panning? Who's doing this? This is nothing compared to what happens later.

Oh, I know what I'm going to go about. Yeah. She works at the casino in Las Vegas. I don't recall how Devan knows her, but they must have mentioned I can't remember what the reason is.

It just happens to know a hostess that Devan knows a hostess at the casino. Let's not let's gloss over it. Yeah. I think somewhere along the way they mentioned it, she contacted them.

Right. Is that what you can do? You can just call it a 19-district. This secret organization that no supposed to know about it.

Well, they're not that secret. They got a bloody truck with it plastered over the side. This is true. And they haven't got to build it with not industries like a big logo.

Yeah, I don't think the secret, I think like a private organization. I don't know how actually I don't know how it works because how can a private organization have like laws and yeah, yeah, that's just gloss over it. Yeah, yeah, I've gone too deep as David said to Rita. David David thought David is made that off.

You got it. No, no, no. Oh, by the way, I should point out that I may mix April and Bonnie up. I noticed that in the notes.

Yeah, you wish. Yeah. Yeah. So April massive glasses reminds Devon that he has a meeting with the widow of the founder of night industries.

Yeah, the only real date that Devon's interested in is with that gin and tonic he's got lined up later. I reckon. Is that? Yeah, yeah.

Although he sees everyone will hurt. He's kind of on point in this episode. He's I suppose it's early first episode in the second season. He's not quite back to his usual ways yet.

You know, you think you think Edward Mulher's drinking works the same as William Shartner's waistline? I think it is. I think it's very much that. It increases as the season goes up.

Yes. Yes. So every server going back to our very first episode because we didn't we cover an episode we covered the pilot and then something from the last season as well, didn't we? I think so.

For a show that isn't like a top favor and it isn't, but it's up there. We've done a lot of episodes on it. I just really. We have and we did the two thousand one as well.

Oh, boy. We really need to do a different show. Yeah, I know. I know.

But I think we commented at the time that he gets worse as the seasons go on in terms of his. Let's say delivery. Yes. Yeah.

So we got to evil Michael or Girth and he's watching old episodes of Night Rider and he's getting angry because he'd rather be watching her wolf. I wrote the A team, but OK. Oh, did you? Yeah.

Nice. I kept in the technology vehicle. You're going to make more sense. Yeah, I should have wrote Street Hog.

I was going to go for Street Hog. Yeah. Yeah. Devon meets a bit of Elizabeth Knight and she flits when she asks Devon to open a window.

Yeah. And I was like, oh, I hope this is important. All right. So really pointless scene.

The whole episode is just Elizabeth asking Devon to do stuff. Yeah. Oh, but this pickle, do you have your big English fraud? Especially she has stuff to do it.

Exactly. Exactly. Even though he's just let one go in the room. You did some funny movement as well.

Well, you're out there. So these fans are made. We do get padding shots of kit driving through Vegas and gunpoint tables. I don't mean he's driving through the tables.

No, I get it. I get it. It would be something. It would be something.

Yeah. There's not a lot of there's not a lot of anything in this first, first part of this episode. No, there's not. No, no.

Rita hosts at the gambling table mistakes. Michael forgot, but she can't talk. So sends him away. No.

Do you think that this would have worked better? If we didn't already know that the the half was playing both characters, they kind of reveal it in that very. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right.

You're right. It's just it's funny because they do a slow reveal of the formula, which is weird because at one point you're going, what's the formula when they should have done the slow reveal of Girth and given told you the formula earlier. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Because I had this drink with Elizabeth and Devan. She slipped something in his drink.

Do you think it's biagra? But it's not working. Is it? You're of the age of future.

I mean, you take it a long time to answer. It's your direction. It's part of. I've tried it, but it's very Moorish.

Is it? Yeah. Yeah. You can't stop at one.

No, no, but I'm thinking of a religious joke about the Mars or something. At this point. And then I have to cut that out. You would?

You can't do religion. No, we can. We should stay awake purposefully. 150 episodes.

We'd never once touch religion. We have mentioned monks a few times. Benedictine. I bet he does.

There we go. They'll got it. They'll got it. I kind of thought that that night gin and tonic was finally kicking in for it because he gets a bit slow, doesn't he?

Imagine if like the alcohol builds up a resistance to all the drugs. And she's like, just having to keep plaring powder into his drinks. Eventually it's just a drink of powder. He's like, oh, is this sherbet?

It's gin's very dry. It's ice cubes. I mean, let's be honest with that was to talk about it with all those drinking habits with you getting slashed during the episode while I'm drinking orange juice. How dare you?

Oh, I'm drinking. That's Coca-Cola. It's a 150 of episode. We're allowed to have a little drink.

You can check out. So you what? If this is your first episode, listener, whoever you are, I'm talking to you now, listener. If you're a new listener, you want to hear a slosh.

You go back and listen to our starchy and heart chappissary because that is, that is, that is messy. I'm telling you now. Which one of us? Both?

Well, by the end of it, both of us. One more than the other. You. If you like.

By the end of it, one of us can barely form words. Well, that's me. Now, my alcohol that you can tell by how high my voice goes, for some reason, the drunk right get the high my voice goes, don't know why. So I'm going to look forward to it by the end of this.

You're going to be like a chipmunk. OK, I'm going to be a stinking. That made me shiver. I don't know why.

Shiver in a good way. No, not at all. Not at all. Shiver in a good way.

Here we go. So back with Michael, Rita tells him about a man called Gaff who resembles him. He helped her and gave Ron a brother jobs to do. And she went out with Gaff.

Suddenly, Michael says, I think I know what's going on here. Ron got suspicious of Gaff, whatever he heard, went on to a tape recorder and a tape he hit all right before I disappeared. Wait, how did he introduce this? He's good.

He's just, he's good. Yeah. Yeah. He's, he's almost, he's almost got kids level of being able to do things that are amazingly impossible.

You know, Rita says, I know it's not much to go on. I, I's remarkably quite a lot. Michael will investigate. You said that you have the key to the locker.

When did she say that? OK, I understand why they did this because they didn't want the whole scene to be just her explaining the situation to Michael. But the way this is written makes Michael seem like a mind reading freak. Freaks are the wrong word.

But all right. I think anybody can read minds is a freak. Well, you've never said you can do it, Colin. Yeah, but I can tell what you're thinking.

Yeah, I'm an open book, though. Let's face it. Yeah, I discussed in part. Lady Chastly's lover.

No use to be your nickname at school, right? Unfortunately, Lady Chastly was the six fifty that kept her. Hey, you know, any port? Yeah, any sailor.

Yeah, I quite a lot. Back at the meal, Devon collapses and Elizabeth Fons Gaff and says, I have the formula. And you know, that point, you're like, what formula? Baby formula?

Yeah, because you don't really know yet. The formula for Devon's favorite drink, which is just gin, not much for formula. It's a bit of a mess, isn't it? Yeah.

Yeah. So we get a montage of a truck being built and gaff pretending to understand blue prints. Yeah, they're upside down, mate. Got to say, incredibly tank shirts.

Fantastic. Oh, you mean like as a fascist, they were not the like one. Gaff. Well, no, I don't have a stroke it or anything.

The shirt. The shirt. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just nice, tight shirts, you know, like it.

Yeah. Next morning, Kit has been studying blackjack. April Carls to say that Devon was poison last night. That Michael should get back to the HQ.

What's Michael going to do? But all right, fine. Michael tells me to ask to go and she thinks it's because a brother isn't important. This is one of those things where people don't explain stuff to each other.

Yeah. Because surely, if he said, oh, Devon's been poisoned, she would have gone. Oh, OK. Yeah, you better go back.

Yeah, but he sees golf walking through the sea. And I was going to grab it. Is that how we did it? Yeah, just like that.

Sorry. Sorry. I did a double take. Pick up the bottle.

One of those will get later. Yeah, we do. Did it go? It didn't see April.

Sorry, my mistake, my mistake. Why why why why would Wilton make Michael look like his son? Explain it to me, Colin. Because Michael is the son that Gaff is not because let's not forget that Gaff is apparently imprisoned in South Africa for three life sentences.

Yeah. What do you have to do for three life sentences? They never say what you did, do they? No.

No. No. But yeah, but it's still weird, don't you know? I mean, yeah, it is weird.

But at no point does anybody go, that's weird. Yeah, we're doing it for them. Yeah, they're just OK with it, right? Yeah, yeah.

Yeah. You think Michael would go hold on a second? Yeah, even he's OK with it. But he finds out.

Yeah. You know, even he sees him and he just thinks, oh, all right. That's what it is. He wanted that he wanted to Michael to be the son that he did the town.

Because Gaff is not the son he wants. Still weird though. Oh, I'm not. Not arguing with you there.

Devin explains to Michael about Gaff, right, at this point. And Devin believes that Gaff is after the formula for kids being lack of a bonded shell. Which apparently is a different explanation for why he is so tough than they gave in the first episode of Night Lider. Apparently, it was something else.

Oh, in the pilot episode, he was so tough because he was starving. Hey, oh, give us a kid. Oh, I will be good with it. Yeah.

You think you didn't? Yeah. It just constantly first Michael was a lad. Yeah.

He ladd. Like, you're talking on your ass on, you know. Who would be good, right? Oh, we should get an episode of Night Lider and redub kids voice in Narvan.

Absolutely. I'm up for that. Yeah. We should do that.

Yeah. And this molecular bonded shell apparently could be sprayed on with a paint sprayer. Apparently so. It's that easy.

Yeah. Yeah. Because that's what we see helping that gas location to the truck. I think that's unlikely.

I could do something with that for my shit because I'll tell you what, the weather is killing it. Is it? Yeah. Yeah.

It's rotten. Just saying, you know, that's fair enough. I thought it was because you were going to say your head or something, but. Well, no, because I'm tough enough as I don't need it.

You're narvan. Absolutely. Hey. Hey.

That's what I go to, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. So the formula for this molecular shell was split between three people with each person not knowing what the other person is.

This seems a very impractical way of keeping a formula. Yeah. It also seems a very practical way of dragging something out. It does.

Because Devin is a second man. And when he was with Elizabeth, he was drugged with a true serum. So he believes he told her his part of the formula. Does Devin strike you as somebody who could remember even part of a formula?

Not really. No, I suppose it might depend on what time of day you get him. Yeah, before 10 in the morning, he's probably all right. After 10, not so much.

Not so much. Yeah. Yeah. Could you remember part of the formula?

I couldn't even remember that was supposed to remember part of the formula. It's a very good. Yeah. What's the formula?

I don't know. What is a formula? Wait, what do you mean? I don't even know what a formula means.

It could go wrong, though, because they might think they might think it's got really good. We'd have to really try to break it. Go to it. We have a double dose of true serum.

Yeah. Yeah. They just get double the truth. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Of anything. Oh, no.

What's he talking about? You don't want to know. You really don't want to know. Put it this way.

It's not the formula. But we're looking for these are not the formulas you are looking for. Certainly not, no. No, very much something else.
