Welcome back to Thomas Watch Radio with me Ryan Dodds, along with me as always, Mr Buckmill Will Hickey. How's it going mate? Oh, it's going good mate. Excited for another super street skater version of the podcast mate, we've got the video from Carlos Rivera, who has this new indie trucks video called Superior in the streets.
It's gonna be a good one mate. Oh, it's gonna be a good one. We love a bit of Carlos. It's only two minutes, 16 seconds long, came out on the 12th of October, 2023, and this is for his new signature pro.
There's new signature pro mid track. With all skate companions or skate breakdowns, whatever you wanna call them, we get the video lined up, we all press play together, and we can kind of, we're on the same page. You don't really need to do this, it's not a big deal, but if you wanna watch along with us. So we've got the video lined up.
If you just type, if you go to independent trucks on YouTube, it's right there. Let the advert play out if there is one, and then on three, two, one, we'll press play. So you're good mate, you're ready to press play? Oh, I'm ready.
So there we go. So it's three, two, one, and play. And straight away, we've got a nice little picture of some trucks rattling around. Yep.
And the indie logo, and now we're in. Carlos Rivera. Oh, lovely. Straight away, hitting some fucking tech on a big boy ledge.
Over-cork or front nose grind mate? I'm saying over-cork. Lovely FIVE-O on a rail. Yep.
Beautiful SBSTS. Yep. Nice little FIVE-O for curb. Ooh.
Might be sure I'll name it that really, but like a switch one eight you nose grind. Lovely pop out there. Oh. Nolly flip, crook.
So nicely done as well mate, perfectly executed. Switch feeble. Yep, switch front feeble looking lovely. Really nice long crook, Nolly flip.
Oh. Is that flip or a heel? I thought it was a flip. Yeah, it was a flip out in a minute.
Switch flip, switch crook. Oh, he's laying mate. Oh, almost triple kink mate. You know what I mean?
Almost triple kink, maybe two and a half kinks. Switch crook. Holding it all the way, trusting. Trusting his weight there mate.
Yep. Real weight forward on that one. Lovely. Never angle for us as well, which is nice, really nice angle.
Yeah, we needed that. Shows the true size of it. Solid part mate, really nice part. Oh.
Not a great deal of tricks. You know what I mean? There was a fair amount of slow mo in there. Yep.
And compared to the video part we've seen recently from Waidus Armo, probably not as much footage. Yes. Some really, really nice technical, well put together, nice aesthetic tricks. You know, fairly simple to him, like a nose growing down a handrail or a 5-0, but he's making them look super, super stylish.
Yeah, and still, not necessarily a 5-0 though, you know, some people are putting out, you know, more of a longer, flatter 5-0. No, it's balanced. It's balanced mate. You know what I mean?
He isn't just throwing down at that. He's sitting on that thing. Yeah, and that is a hard trick. 5-0 and on a round rail is difficult.
Yeah. He blesses us with an SSBS mate, switched our own backside tail slide on a lovely, an outlet edge, drops down perfectly, and then bless us with a percolate, oh, fakey blip as well there mate. Yeah. That's such a nice spot.
Because you could probably fuck yourself up quite badly, you know, it does get quite tall by the end of it, you know? Yep. You're in switch back tail. You've got to be in control of that.
You could be getting powerbombed down the bottom of those steps. I like how that was filmed as well, from a roof or something like that, nice high up. You are both tricks there. And then we've got this nice, kind of like, snaked, curved sort of cut through spot mate, where he does the switch 180 to front crook, if you will.
And brings it back, mate. Yeah, brings it back. He does. Just continue.
Yeah, do you really make that trick as well? Because I think if you had rotated like, pirouette the whole way around, mate, it would have been a bit too much, which you could have done, because it should have kind of go around that way to complete it. He just mirrored it, rather than kind of completed it that way. You can't just put it back to where it should have been.
Yeah, exactly. Just stuck it right home. The spot selection he's got here mate is pretty good. Oh mate.
Yeah, all these spots are really nice. And you know, we've got the sunshine in there mate. You know, it's just making us happy. We're getting third party, then the D here.
And that goes a long way mate. You know what I mean? We need some of that third party bit, then D. It's been actually quite a nice day today.
But for the last week, it's been horrendous. It's been pissing it down. So it's nice to get a little bit of sun, but it don't last long now. Yeah, that's it.
Back to the part mate, Nolly Hill crook held all the way. Lovely round ledge. Lovely dismount. And I will say, this Nolly Hill crook on this rail mate is an interesting looking trick.
Is that a hill? Is it a flip? That's a flip. No, it's a flip.
It just looks quite interesting. It's just, I don't know, maybe because he's not really hitting a lot of the rail. He's almost like hitting just the end of the... Yeah, popping right down there.
It'd be nice for a different angle from the other side of that as well, because love a bit of fish I make. You're obviously getting there nice and close, and it's hard to tell how big is that thing, because he's so close in there. Yeah, again, spot selection. This handrail next to these train tracks mate.
Oh, wait. Sorry. We do get a double angle actually. Oh, what of the Nolly flip?
Yeah, do bless us with the long lens there as well. Yeah, then he's hitting this lovely switch front feeble mate. You've really dipped. Yeah, really dipped.
And a really cool shot as well. Like a really cool fish eye shot seeing the grass and the flowers and the sky and the background. It's a nice, really nicely composed shot. It almost makes the, you know, the spot look better.
If not, it looks bad. It looks like a really nice life for someone who's going to skate that sort of setup. And then the length of this crook mate on this blue rail, the length of it. And then the audacity of your put a Nolly flip at the end of it.
Oh, yeah. How long do you reckon that crook is mate? That's a tough one, right? That's a little...
It is. Because he pretty much goes the whole way. Yep, gets on there. Right way he needs to do.
Yeah, and each one of those kind of rectangles on that rail. Probably about a good meter, I'd say. Yeah, maybe even close to like a meter 20. Yeah, I think it's about 32 inches in that round.
Right. And you can tell that as long as that. I think 32 inches, what is that in? That's probably not quite a meter.
So yeah, I think it's between like a 1.2. Yeah, I get any meter and a half max. But you know. And he's hitting four of them mate.
Pretty much. Yeah. So it's a decent length grind on a handrail. Yeah, probably talking like at least, you know, like a 12 foot, 12 foot nose grind on the flip.
Very nice. And the next one is lovely hubber mate. Super super tech. Beautiful flip crook.
Switch flip, sorry. Yep. Crook. Great angle, great fish eye.
Nice little double angle afterwards. Double angle showing the true height of that leg mate. Yeah. That hubber is a big boy hubber.
Oh yeah, you can see how he comes down from that. I've got it paused on a 120 mark just as he's kind of popping. Nice. And you can see that that ledge is above his hips.
Oh yeah, that is a chunk ledge. That's scary. Yeah. Yeah, you don't want to be hitting the ground for that.
You can be going down. And then we're on the end of rail mate. You know, truly a double kink really. But like I keep mentioning, there's that little nubbin on the bottom which he kind of does ride through it.
It's got to be ready for something like that mate. So, you know, is that triple kinko? Probably he hits three kinks. Oh yeah.
So you're in switch crook hitting that. Ready to, you can see there's a really weird kind of, um, almost like board and body movement when he does ride over that bit mate. Yeah. Yeah.
No, you've got that little bit of slow mo. You can just tell it just that little. It almost makes him have to pop out or, you know, probably forces a partial pop out. On the, um, the angle that's like a 135, he keeps his weight down.
Yeah. Switch leg down into that kink and just rides it. He does, he does just keep going into, keeps going down and lets it just pop up a little bit. And that kind of gives him his landing angle.
Yeah, you're right. Just, just pinched in and just lets the pinch, just rides it. What feelings you get after hitting this sort of length of a switch crook down a handrail? Only so many people can really have that feeling, right?
And he's such a, you know, general technical edge skater is one of those guys who can do the tricks that you want to see people do and he can do them flawlessly. And to do something that technical on a rail like that, it just shows you how fucking hard it is mate. For, you know, shows you how really fucking hard something like that is to do and then do it switch. It isn't basic, but some people perceive it basic because there's not a lot of moving parts to it.
Yep. But let's just talk about being in switch, going to a handrail, being in a crook which is all in, that trick is there's no half ass way of doing a crook on a handrail. Yep. If you kind of pull out of that, you know, you know, and turn into a, you know, a willy, you're going to fuck yourself up.
Oh yeah. And obviously if you go over shooting it mate, you're going to fuck yourself up. Because you've got all your, your back foot power weight in the front of the board that's going to send you over. You're not going to be as dexterous and had a, had a navigate that landing if you do fuck it up.
And you know, you got, you got the people who, you know, can do all the, the fakey front crooks, the, the fakey switch crooks sort of thing. They're not doing it down stuff like this for a reason. Because it's fucking hard. And then getting into that switch, you just add in another level, you know, your whole body science, everything.
And that's it. I mean, to be fair, that part does kind of fly. So you could watch that a couple of times, you know, you know, you know, hype for a little skate or, or you just want to break down some of the tricks and kind of find his technique, you know, it's always good to do that. Look for, look for skates, techniques and everything, just if you can learn something.
I wouldn't say this is good as the weight of the salamate part mate, if I'm going to be completely honest, there's some, there's some super tech in it. I don't think it really kind of has the overall vibe of a proper part is more of like a promo video, if you will, but still enjoyable. 100%. And I'm with you there.
I do like wait a summer a little bit more, but the level of skateboarding, you know, that they're just, I would say they're just as good as each other in different elements. But this is where I was saying earlier, you know, I wasn't left one and more of weight to Sam, obviously I always want more weight to salamate, don't get me wrong there. I wasn't left disappointed. I'm not left disappointed here, but I'm left wanting more and not in the sense where I'm just like ready.
I just wanted more. I wasn't, wasn't fulfilled. No, we needed to see a little bit more flipping flip out shit or something. We needed, we just need a little bit more, but it's just, and it's strange from say like, comparing the two video parts, obviously if you haven't listened to the way to Sam, I'm going to go listen to that and go and check out the video itself.
Yeah. But thunder, you know, they do put up some good videos, but you think indie would pout something better than thunder just the way it is, mate. They just think that they would put something better out, but that isn't the case. That isn't the case at all.
You know, that thunder video was a nicely put together promotional video. It still was a promo video really for the release of the truck, but it was just more considered rather than this one, which is seen like they put the rattling trucks at the start, but that's about as independent as it gets. And you know what, white was, you know, complimenting, you know, not even in half way through the video, the film and the shots were exceptional. They were fucking sick, but you know, they just needed a little bit more in there, a little bit more, a little bit more combination, a couple of lines in there, mate, or a few other little notes and that would have been, been creeping up a bit more there.
And that's what we had, I think, with the thunder, a little bit more personal way to touch. Yeah, yeah, more authentic to him, whereas this color's Roberto, obviously he's hitting this fucking heavy hitter at the end and some heavy hitting tricks throughout SSBSTS included. But it just, yeah, it just seemed like they had a collection of his tricks. They put them together where his weight is just, I don't know, there's more of vibe.
Yeah, it's still pretty cool, mate. You know, I'd probably, you know, if you're going to turbo rate, it's hard to turbo rate these ones, but I'm probably giving this like, you know, three, three point five sort of deal. Pretty good, but we know cars are a lot more not taken away. Yeah, exactly.
This, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, is ridiculous. No one else is touching this, but he does, he does that more. Yeah, and that's it. And I think, you know, we all know that recently he had some sort of injury.
That's why he didn't skate against Chris Colwell and the Barrocks. So, you know, maybe it's film recently and maybe they couldn't go any further and they just, you know, all these trucks are still coming out. So we've got to get this out now. Carlos is probably going, well, I only wanted two minutes, seven part and these are the only tricks we're doing is just how shit goes sometimes as well.
So, yeah, we know that he can, we can, he can definitely produce. So, we're talking about the Barrocks, mate. Should we, should we have a little, should we just jump over there a little bit and have a little chat about that? Oh, we could definitely do that.
Keep the updates going. Seems like a slow down a little bit in terms of them getting the skates together, but we've got round three starting now, but we can talk about, I don't think we've spoken about like the Legion of Doom and about the substitution property, have we? I don't think we, we got round to that. Yeah, I don't think so, Les.
I'm going to just open up some of the videos now and see if, see if we can recall where we last was. Well, most recent ones is Levi Lofelberger versus Nick Holt and Chris Jocelyn versus Tullipiterson. They're the most recent ones, which we'll cover in a minute. So I think the last ones we did was the Andy Anderson, Nick Holt and Jamie Griffin and Zach Dolan on the round two.
Yeah, so we don't have the Carlos Rivera who kind of subbed himself out for injury. That's it. Which, if the listeners didn't, I'm sure you do, but like we'll say, he had a bit of an injury, so he's got to sub out to Costan and then Costan subbed out to Molto basically and Chris Cole still came out victorious. Yep.
And then we had the Legion of Doom. Who are they up against, mate? I can't even remember now. Luanne.
Oh, there you go. Yeah, Luanne. You've got a little bit silly in my personal opinion. Yes.
You know, you can't be letting the Legion of Doom kind of go through and win this. And it nearly, it kind of got to the point. I think the ref almost stepped in and it was like, no, no, no, no, no. Yep.
Like this, we've got to do this right way. Luanne's going through. None of you boys are going through. This is not how this works.
Which is a bit of a shame that this, you know, a couple of matchups near the end of round two, mate, didn't quite kind of, it left me the same vibe that we had from the previous Battle of Eryx, where they're finding it hard to get shit done. Yes. It started off nicely. So hopefully this is not hard to get Cody's speed together together and Luanne and Jamie Griffin together.
Yep, that's it. Which will be a crazy matchup. I think that the one Jamie Matt Jupp is going to be something really special. I might be wrong, but I think he's got Jamie Griffin, Nick Holt, next for this third round.
And then, yeah, they're all going to be in that part of the semi-finals or whatever. Yeah. So we had the Nick Holt, Levi Lofelberger match, which is a really, have you watched that one? Yeah.
Yeah. Such a good matchup, I thought. May, heavy game escape, heavy. And I'm not, I'm not the biggest Nick Holt fan.
He is a great flat ground skater, nonetheless. But that game escape, unbelievable defense on both sides. Like what a good game escape there. Really fun to watch.
Levi Landon tricks that, you know, they've said he's not landed before and some insane tricks. Tricks like double heel flips in there, you know, some switch, switch laser or some laser in there. Some laser in there as well, mate. And on defense fucking hell, you know, don't really see any of it.
Yeah. Like so many technical, oh yeah, not only laser flip mate, that's what it was. Yeah. And just, yeah.
I'm getting it. Yeah. Nicely done tricks. Yeah.
I think overall probably Nick did deserve to get the win on that one. Yeah. 100%. He was definitely more, more prepared.
Yeah. He was on, he was on point. And he was, he was getting really good. So as Levi felt like Nick just had, has a bit more general basics that just go a bit further where Levi's got more of his own special many of those.
Yeah. I think Nick's a bit more prone. Yeah. Yeah.
That's right. He's just got a little bit more, like you were saying, mate, he's just consistent. Right. He's got all that shit down.
So really good matchup. Really enjoyable. Yeah. Really, really fun to watch.
Yes. Yes. It came out. It was the question of versus Tyler Peterson.
You see that mate? Yeah, I did. Yeah. Earlier today.
And a little bit disappointed mate, you know. Me too. Yeah. I would have really liked Justin to keep power and through.
But again, mate, not the biggest side of Peterson fan, but undeniably skated really well. Yeah. My only problem. We can speak about this pretty much in every single Battle of Eric's episode we do.
But when someone comes in throwing like double flips out straight away, mate, I just, I'm not fan. Yeah, me too. I just think there's a way there's a bit of respect that you need to kind of give someone just to let him warm up into the game, you know, rather than throwing double flips and was it a double flip that he kind of tried straight away or? Yeah, it might have been.
As soon as Tyler gets it, he starts kind of taking a piss and he does like a dolphin flip. You know, he does. He does double flip and fake a double flip as well. Yeah.
I just think it's a bit filthy. And Justin and I do your dasset to eat a take his shoes off. Yeah, that extra grip in there. Yeah.
You know, seeing some crazy kind of, you know, the five, four each of its. Yeah, always nice to see. Yeah. Yeah, Cavallaria big spin.
Yeah, yeah, very. You know, crazy trick to keep keep your head around with that one, mate. You know, it's probably quite a simple trick for these guys anyway, but that extra rotation surely would just fuck your head up. Just that spin at the end.
I don't know. It's a looks awesome. Looks like a really cool trick. Yeah, definitely a lot of tricks done in this game of skate.
They could have been anyone's match, you know, some of these guys just carried on. And like you said, you know, Chris Jocelyn plays the gentleman game of skate. You play game of skates, have you on these days? You know, some people just playing away and they're not playing a put on a show or they're putting on their own show sort of thing.
So, you know, because he's going in there, Nolly 180, Fakie 180, he's warming himself up, he's getting in the flow and he's hammering down. But both of these guys will obviously Jocelyn, he's won before. Sila hasn't played in the semifinals. I think Jocelyn didn't take it that seriously, though.
I don't think he was really kind of worried about it. Yeah, that's it. I'm sure he could have played a bit more of a looser game, you know, a bit more of a sacrificial game, played a bit more game of chances. And knocked out his front job late flips and a few of those tricks out there and had no problem landing them.
It's crazy they've been releasing boards for like each round of the competition, mate. Have you seen this? They've got like a round three board release. Yeah, no, I saw that.
It just seems like, you know, you're actually going to sell all of those? I mean, it's by any battle of X13 round three board and receive a ticket to the finals night. So that's kind of like, which is cool. I think it's really awesome.
I mean, I've always been a state, so I'd be buying one to get down there. I suppose if it's just a ticket and you get a board with it, then it's not a really, you know, it's quite a good angle. But wouldn't you rather just buy a ticket? Maybe I don't know if it's P-Rod's board, but is Nick Holt going to be selling his many boards?
You know, in order to respect him, you know, he's an awesome skater, but he's not going to say him. Yeah, it's going to be more die-hard, barracks fans mixed with just who's got more of a fan-based following, what cult following? I suppose the next games surely will be, they've got to be next weekend, right? I would have thought one was kind of, one would come out generally, they would do one on a Saturday, one on a Sunday, I think.
I suppose one could come out today. Yeah. It could be the Jamie Griffin match next. Have you got a pick mate?
Have you got a pick now? Who we got in there? We still go over Jamie to kind of... Jamie and Nick Holt, they'll say earlier.
Nick Holt was against Levi Lofelberg or any level level burger. Yes. Lohan against Jamie. Really?
Yeah. And Chris Cole against Cody's a pay-dah. It's a tough one because Cody could be a dirty bastard to Cole, but like I've been saying, Cole's been looking pretty good, so I'd probably pick Cole to be Cody. I mean, if he wins the Roshan Bow, I think Cole will win it, but Cody could start doing some double flips as well, couldn't he?
Yeah. He's got them in his game. I suppose the same with those, the Roshan Bow's important with Lohan and Jamie, because it would just set the tone. Yeah.
And I feel like Lohan's got more of the general ABC flat ground in regular and switch, which Jamie has most of, but not all of the general flat ground basics. So if Lohan goes first and starts knocking off, you know, Nolly Hill, Fakie Hill, Switch Hill, all of them, he could peg him down a bit that way. But if Jamie goes first, he could take Lohan down with some things that he's not really doing. He'd do it in the Dats and Double Heels and some shit like that.
So that'd be an interesting one. Chris Cole, I feel like I put money on Chris Cole, but Cody's pay-dah could be silently practicing some two or three tricks, you know, and if he's got those two or three tricks on luck and has the chance to put him down and he could put himself in a position, Lohan and Jamie Griffin, I don't know where I put money on. I think it's all to do who wins the Rock Paper Siser, surely. It's just, because you could just see Lohan just hitting his tricks, just methodically going through his- It'd be nice to know the stat, if like, you know, when he goes like a betting shot, they got the stats on like the boxing or whatever.
It'd be nice to see the stats on, because generally Lohan's got more data in the battle of the barracks, more history, so you can see what he has landed in there, but Jamie hasn't, so you just can't- There isn't as much to compare against. Jamie is an incredible flat ground skater. So he's got tricks that no one's got. He's super, super talented.
Has Lohan won one of them? Or has he come second? Yeah, I think he did, yeah. Yeah, I'm sure he's won one.
Must have done. Yeah, that's going to be a good match. I still don't know where I'd put my money. You know, I'd really like Jamie Griffin to win again, but if Lohan beats him, I'm not going to be mad.
He's going to be a great fucking skater as well. Yeah, I don't mind. In this situation, obviously I'd want Chris Cole to win the whole thing, but there's a lot of good skaters in there that, you know, I'd rather Tyler Peterson and Nick Holt didn't, but I could see Nick Holt doing, you know, causes some damage to someone. I'm trying to think if Nick Holt and Tyler Peterson matched in one of the last two barracks, they feel like Tyler might just have him, but they're both, you know, they've both got the switch trades.
They've got, you know, the trade double flips. They've got general solid flat ground, so that could be an interesting match if it hit the ball to it. But generally, I'm having for Chris Cole and Jamie Griffin. Jamie Griffin preferred because of what happened, but maybe because if they had another match up, you know, to see if any of them have tweaked some games or whoever gets that right paper says is and stays with it or, you know, maybe not even that just whoever slips up and gives give the set away at the wrong time, mate, because, you know, in a game of skate, mate, let's say you've been pegged all the way down to A or T or whatever, and it's your go and you've got your three to four special tricks that you've got every go and they might not have every go.
That could almost be end game. Yeah, that's it. So it can happen that quick. Hopefully the next couple of games will be out this weekend or next weekend and we'll finish round three up so we get moving.
Yeah. Because of the last thing, I mean, when is finals night? Have we looked at this before? I'll see if it does.
I'm on the end of the latest video. Final is night 11, 11, 23. Okay. So not actually not that far away then.
We're on like the 22nd of October as we record this couple of weeks really. Yeah, yeah, not long actually. Yeah, a few weeks. Yeah, I wonder if we'll get to matches this weekend or if they'll stagger a match a weekend now then.
Yeah, because after this is finals night anyway, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. So they probably won't have a match.
Yeah, because after this is finals night anyway, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, so they probably will stagger them for a couple of weeks. Just to sell some boards or whatever.
Yeah. We'll get to have a finals night and watch it when we make sure we kind of get that. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
The last one we wanted to repeat from last year. Yeah, that's it. I feel like we're close enough now, hopefully. I feel like surely half of it.
You just bang it out. You feel most of it in a weekend. Yeah, just get it done. Yeah.
And then keep the results hash hash and then finals night get everyone back in the same spot again. So, you know, I haven't really been, I don't really haven't been going on social media too much, but I don't haven't seen if Jamie Griffin's in America or anything like that. So who knows? But you know, maybe he's been keeping that hash.
Who knows? Really? Yeah, that's good. Like a round up of the barracks and really enjoyable video part from Carse Barrick.
Oh, yeah. Lovely part, mate. Yeah. Go and watch it.
Go and watch it. That's more if you want more from Carse Barrick after that. They definitely want more mate. Oh, of course.
Of course. Thanks for listening and we'll see you soon. All right. Nice one.
