155. Living with ADHD and staying sober with coach Emma Gilmour

from How I quit alcohol

In this episode I catch up with Emma Gilmour. Emma is a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, This Naked Mind and Gray Area Drinking Coach, living in Melbourne, Australia. Emma worked for 20+ years in corporate marketing. A working mum fuelled by adrenalin, coffee and booze, she looked like she had it all. But on the inside, she was running on empty. As she reached her mid-forties alcohol started to take more than it was giving and so begun her long and very messy break-up with alcohol. Nothing stuck until her eldest asked her to ‘stop bringing wine into their bedroom’ then it finally landed for her.Emma started the process of rebuilding herself as an adult, with nurturing care. She discovered her values, stopped drinking, and had to create a whole new identity.A booze & corporate job-free identity.Life dramatically improved without booze. She began to discover who she really was, what she liked and what she didn’t like now that booze was no longer her hobby and best friend, she could trust, listen to and follow her intuition!Kicking the booze to the curb gave Emma a previously unknown level of confidence and personal power to pursue her dreams and become a qualified counsellor and coach.Still very much a work in progress, Emma is an Aussie based peri-menopausal mum of neuro and gender diverse teens who also has a ADHD diagnosis herself. We talk about self-regulation and why it is so important, her journey with alcohol life on the other side.Resources:The book we talk about is different not less by Close Hayden : https://www.chloehayden.com.au/shop/p/different-not-less-bookWe also talk about Scatter Minds by Gabor Mate : https://drgabormate.com/book/scattered-minds/Links to Emma's podcast about her experience of Alcohol, ADHD and Peri-menopause and the link between them all! https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/podcasts/midlife-af-podcast/episodes/2147907111Hope Rising Coaching: - The link to Emma's website  https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/counselling_home- Emma's instagram https://www.instagram.com/hoperisingcoaching/This episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. To check them out go to www.mondaydistillery.com For more resources such as coaching or to join the next HIQA challenge go towww.iquitalcohol.com.auFollow HIQA insta @howiquitalcohol Music for Monday Distillery ads by Ash Grunwaldwww.ashgrunwald.comMusic for Podcast intro and outro written by Danni Carr performed by Mr CassidyIf you are struggling with physical dependancy on alcohol consider contacting a local AA meeting or a drug and alcohol therapist. Always consult a GP before stopping alcohol.  Hosted on Acast.
