Good afternoon, good evening. You're listening to the AllTalkCar podcast, hosted by Peter Ronas. Tonight, something special. I was in SEMA recently in Las Vegas, and we have a two part show.
The first part is tonight. We're gonna be interviewing a few of the exhibitors at SEMA. First, you'll hear from his Laura Nash, an engineer from APP EV Systems, a company that's developed battery packs for classic cars. Then we'll be talking to Joe Rock from Retro Manufacturing, and their company I've voted for their company, and they basically produce retro radios for old classic cars as well as speakers and antennas.
And then we interview both Keon and Aemon, friends of the show at the IGL Coding's booth, and it's Aemon's first time in SEMA. And Keon has been there since 2014, so we interviewed those boys at the end. And I hope you enjoy the interviews. We're gonna be recording live here at SEMA.
So we've got Laura Nash here from APP EV Systems, one of their head engineers, and Laura, you got a unique product here at SEMA this year. What exactly do you guys do? Yeah, so we're in the market of selling EV conversion kits for classic cars, so our first model is basically a plug and play version where you take out the fuel tank and the, you take out the fuel tank in the engine, and then you drop in our kit. So it's plug and play, modular battery concept.
There's no drilling, no holes added. We use all factory mounting locations for these kits. So we hope to expand to other models, but the first one is a Porsche 911, 1965 to 1989. And that's the kit we were showing.
And that's the kit we were showing. And they're on display, so it's a black 911 there. So and you've got the battery packs in both the front and rear? Yeah, so we have five battery packs in.
They're all connected and series. There's a couple of packs that have the disconnects on them for safety. And there's one pack in the front right now, and then four packs in the rear. Combined kilowatt hours for the whole system is 73 kilowatt hours, which comes out to about 220 miles for a range.
And three of our battery packs have eight modules and then, three of our packs have eight modules and then two of our packs have four modules. And that's just space constraints in the Porsche 911. So basically, I mean, someone brings you their classic car. They take the engine out and it's just installing the battery packs, I guess.
Yeah, so we're in the market of selling the kit and then actually it would be installed by an installer or you could do it yourself. So we have, it comes with wiring harnesses and high voltage wiring harness and all the components ready to plug and play basically. So you've designed it for specific models? So we've known the 911.
What other cars have you got the kits for? Yes, so we are just launching here at CMOS. So this is our first prototype project for 911. But other models are gonna be like Ford Mustang, from 64 to 70, the Mercedes W113, and the Pagoda style, yeah?
The C-Corps V2, VMWE9. So mainly anything from the 60s and 70s. And average cost of a kit? Yeah, it's gonna be right around 60,000.
U.S. Yeah, U.S. dollars. And is that dependent on, like if I wanted a thousand horsepower in batteries, obviously that's a more battery packs that's high the price or?
Yeah, one battery pack is around $10,000. Okay. Batteries are very expensive and hard to find. But we have a tier one supplier called A123 that provides us with BDA modules, but this is a shoebox that we package in custom battery enclosures that we make.
The other side of our business focuses on carbon fiber. So our battery enclosures are carbon fiber layers of carbon fiber and Kevlar, pephalon for high temp resistance and just strength overall strength and also cuts our weight incredibly. Also we make our subframes in house as well. So like a rear subframe by itself weighs 37 pounds.
It's like very, you know, very light. So plug away for our listeners, we've got listeners in North America as well, not only just Australia, so plug away how can someone contact you if they want to sort of bring their classic car into the 21st century, I guess? Yeah, absolutely. So we have a website, appe systems.com and it shows background on what our company does and how to purchase a kit and then we'll probably down the line, partner with some installers.
That's a little down the line. This is our product launch. I'm just kind of seeing what the interest is and then we'll have to expand to other cars. You've got our attention and there's a lot of classic cars that sort of make, I mean, they take a while to maintain the old the cars with the parts, the limited supply engines and this is just a new way to bring it into the 21st century and get the old look but a new feel.
So congratulations. Thank you. Good luck on the launch and hope to see you spread out to 80s and 90s of the cars. That's the world.
Absolutely. So thank you for having us. Thank you. We're here at the, another interesting booth.
I'm here with Joe Rod from Retro Manufacturing. Good day. May know. How are you doing?
Pretty good. The reason why I've been drawn to your booth is, as my listeners know, I'm a judge and CEO of the Global Media Awards and I voted for your product. Well, thank you very much. Really appreciate that.
I don't know if you've won yet. That's tomorrow. I don't know yet. So, yeah, so, yeah.
So, I'm voting for you as a three o'clock but I saw that your booth, I just came straight down. So basically, I voted on the Europa Radio. So, tell us a bit about the product. Sure.
Yeah, the Europa was developed for mainly for 60s to 70s and Mercedes restorations. It's kind of styled after those particular vehicles but really it looks great in anything from the 60s to 80s that's a European model car that has a din opening. Right? So the knobs in the face plate and the buttons were all styled after that 60s to 70s era.
And the great thing about the Europa is like all of our radio faces, you can pick your feature set. It works with any of our radio motor models. So, over in Australia, you guys have the AB Plus over there. That's right, digital, yeah.
Right, so our high end model would have the AB Plus, Bluetooth, USB, of course, auxiliary inputs and dedicated sub-woofer output. So, pretty much anything you get in a Sony or a wild-punk radio or anything like that but styled for that particular era of vehicle that you're working. And that's the thing. I mean, there's a lot of classic cars in Australia and you want to bring them to today.
You can't say that for a drive that. Yeah. But the reason you love those cars is because how they look, right? You want to operate like a new car.
But you want it to look like a new vehicle. You want to think you can't live without music and that. And those old radios aren't that good. It's something that works because of that.
But anything else. That's a great point. Not only do they not work anymore, but if you put a brand new radio in that car, it's just going to clash so much with the interior that most of the time it's just going to keep that old radio that doesn't work and not have a radio, right? That's your choice.
So, that's kind of what we try to do is we try to provide you with the best looking, authentic, period, correct kind of radio that you can get for whatever make your model that you happen to have. But with that updated technology of today, Bluetooth, Bluetooth, connectivity, can you answer your phone? You can, yeah. Bluetooth models actually come with a microphone.
So you can route that up to the visor or convenient spot. And yeah, that's one of the things our customers love most about the radio itself is being able to answer phone calls, stream their music. Same thing they would do in their daily driver, but at the car show, we're on the weekend. That's right.
And we're getting street laws in Australia, not about the US. And that is, you touch your phone and you go, you've got to drive them. You know, they don't want to be touching your phone. So, you've got that ability to answer your phone.
Absolutely. That happened a long time ago here. You're not able to. Everything's hands-free.
So, we knew that it's important to our customers. And a lot of our customers aren't only, you know, into building their cars and keeping them in the garage. They want to drive them around. And when you want to drive your car, you want your favorite music.
What better to drive your 60s Mustang around to listen to but something from the 60s? You know what I mean? Kind of really put you in the moment. So what other products do you guys have as well?
Sure. I mean, we do a full line of audio accessories, speakers, amplifiers, antennas. Anything you need to make that radio sound great that we make, we can provide for you. The classic vice.
Same thing with the speakers. We're not into designing flashy, godly speakers that are going to clash with the aesthetic of your vehicle. They're real subtle. They're just mostly plain black looking speakers.
But they fit with the car. And they're not going to pop out and look awkward. But they're going to sound great. And I also heard you guys got a hold of plated vices for the radiiis as well.
Yeah, our retro radio product is our most versatile radio face. It has over 2,000 different mezels or face plates you can combine with it for all kinds of different makes and models for hold ins, for American cars, European cars. It kind of can adapt to any environment. That's the display you see back there with the rotating video.
For at least it's the reach out and it's checking products out and it may even bother them. How would we go about? Well, they're in Australia. You'd have to get it from an authorized dealer.
I don't believe we're shipping directly. I should I? Can they tell you about that? So you want to check out a dealer in your location.
But you can find those dealers on our website. Just pop in where you're at. We'll recommend what's your website? Our website is RetroManuFactoring.com.
You also want to check out RetroBelt.com. That's our seat belt line. So we do a full line of seat belts with the classic abation style buckles or the push button buckles with the starburst kind of design in it like they had in the 50s and 60s. So we do a full line of seat belts too.
Because we figure if you're going to restore your radio, you're going to be driving the car. You're going to probably need some new seat belts. So you're moving across throughout the interior. Exactly.
So check out RetroBelt.com as well. Thank you very much for putting on the show. My pleasure. I really appreciate your vote.
And thanks for coming to the show. It really means a lot. Thank you. Thank you.
So yeah, you can talk shit about Khalil all you want. I am at the IGL Coding's booth. And we've got a good friend of the show here. I am in the IGL.
Hey, Garmate. A little bit heartbroken and disappointed. We're missing two people. Khalil's not here.
Khalil's not here. That's OK. Well, next time we're going to have to bring you. It's a bit too quiet without Khalil's.
And it's basically IGL's first time. Because we also got Keongi, who's number one. He's the boss. He's the owner.
So Keongi is here for IGL Coding's. And it's his first year at Cima with a stand. No, not the first year. I first year.
Even first year. We're here since 2014. 2014? You've been here.
Wow. OK. Tell us about IGL. What do we got here?
So IGL Coding's is the company that focuses on the research environment of eco-friendly ceramic coatings that focus on towards the protecting all the automotive experience surface. So one of our latest tech is actually utilizing graphene reinforcing the protective level that we can provide towards automotive. So our coatings can cover areas such as pain, plastic, metal, fabric, wood, and all these multiple areas. And it's basically to protect it from corrosion is the main enemy.
But what else does it help to protect? So for automotive first, corrosion is actually not the core area they were looking at for the automotive sex. So towards the bottom was the part of it. Is it a lot easier to clean?
OK. With the top cars and coatings and feet, I guess. Yeah. Our leading edge.
So I think all of you guys have experienced IGL. So all your cars are coated with IGL. So the products you use at your shop are IGL products? Yeah.
OK. So leading edge is 100% IGL. So basically, other than protecting the finish and the paintwork, that is a maintenance and cleaning. And exactly what each and every single one of you boys will all talk.
You have all experienced IGL Kenzo. So that is Mr. Keung is the inventor of IGL Kenzo. He's the supplier to me.
Right. And then basically, your company is based in Malaysia. Correct Malaysia. And everything is manufactured and sorted.
Like the factory's in Malaysia. Manufactured. Develop everything there in house. And then the ship globally will work.
And I can see on the photo. This is a radio. So the listeners can't see on the photo. But I can see you've got a fair bit of staff there.
How many people have you got working at the? Well, 60 people. 60 people. 60 people.
6,000 private detailers for IGL in America alone. In America. So basically, IGL supplies America, supplying Australia. So you went in Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia.
Sorry? Middle East. Middle East as well, yes. But around this area.
So where else? We have some parts in South America. It's great right now. Yeah.
South America. So these are a few areas that you cover. So basically, if you decide, I mean, you might not know, that IGL is on your car, protecting it. So if you go to get a ceramic coating or to get a clean, or some of the materials that are already on your car have got protection from your company.
So they're the products you see. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
By numbers around 50 countries around the world. And most of the users were at the car's protected, right? And they have a result in everything already. But they trust the shop more sometimes.
So they might not be aware that it's actually being protected by IGL. But if they try back again on the images, they're right there. They will go. It's a good idea.
It's pretty much it is like, you know, to you, you're like, leading a detail in my car. Yeah. But in fact, yes, we've determined code that using IGL.G. So the consumer may not recognize your product.
But that's what Siemens about. It's basically a wholesale show. There's no real consumers here. It's basically your wholesaler selling to different industries.
And people who use buyers are here looking for new products. Since 2014, we're now in 2022. It's like a good eight, nine years. What's changed over the time?
Have you found new products? Have you, what are you pushing this year? Is there anything new or? So we started trading for the automotive line.
And now as we grow, I mean, mature, we have lots of products around the world which we love the automotive products. And actually, early this year, we started to diversify into the industrial area as well. That's right. Now, we actually are showcasing our new product.
You could clear edges. It's anti-corrosion coating. They have to protect against corrosion and rust. And that's an industrial machines, in factories, mining, everywhere.
It's not anything that rust. Anything that rust, yeah. Yeah. So any product that's exposed to rust, you're pushing this, so it's a graphene reinforced, anti-corrosion, cleacoat, which goes on the exterior of the product.
And you'll be blown away from how long it's been tested to last. It's just ridiculous. But one of the greatest, the point of use, right? And right now we have the only one, the lowest, is that it's the transparent anti-corrosion coating system that can last up to 5,000 or so spray hours.
Because any other products in the market right now, they're not transparent. You can see through, it's super thick, and you use a lot of heavy-toxing material inside there to protect against the corrosion. 5,000 salt spray hours is 15 years in general use gear? Morning, then.
Yeah. And I even showed me a picture earlier. I mean, we'll describe it to the listeners who understand. So you went to some, to a mining company, is it a two-star cylinder?
Yeah, so what happened is, obviously, we distribute Agile and Australian. Australians like to try stuff themselves, right? That's why I said we love to try stuff. Yeah, I love to try.
Yeah, experiment. Part of my volume, so one of the boys in Perth has friends in the mining industry, and this company is an exploration company. So what they do is they go on to vehicles and buggies and scope outsides for new mines. That's right.
Yes, they do test drills and see what's under there. So they're driving through. That's right. So, Virgin Rough Territory.
So he goes, OK, guys, I want you to help me test this product. We're going to hang a piece of metal, two pieces of metal on your buggy. And let it rust. We're going to coat one piece of metal with Agile.
So you did one side, your product, and the other side, whatever. Just plain plain metal. Now, these guys used to use Lanolin oils, like sheeps oil, right? Yep.
And they have to do it almost every few days. And they take forever for them to clean it off and put it back on. So right now we're showing the photo for the listeners of the two pieces of metal looking the same basically. And then the next photo is after one week only.
That's not after the month. So the photo I'm looking at, so the left side up, I believe, is ideal. Because that's still shiny. You could probably see your face at it if you tried.
And the right side just looked like brown. Rust brush. That's what one week? One week only, because it's salt lakes.
Yeah. And it's a machinery. And not just machinery, but all the land cruisers and everything. They're rusting away.
So anything with exposed metal, if you coat it in this product, it protects it. Now, the biggest point of difference for us is not just the graphing nanoparticles, which makes it more durable and gives it the same benefit of a ceramic coating, which is the dirt and the water beating and stuff not sticking to it. Because it's the only clean coating, it doesn't need a primer. So it doesn't change the finish of whatever you're coating.
So if you're West track and your vehicle's yellow, we can't actually, in the factory, put yellow pigments in this product so you can use it as paint. OK, to match the color. But if you want to spray it clear, it doesn't change whatever you're spraying. So, you know, let's, you know, Halleles, Holden Commodore.
Yeah, the green frog. So it doesn't rust away the green frog, because all actually now it's an Australian car. It's not American. No, but there's a lot of plastic on it too.
Yeah. You can spray it. You can spray the plastic on my Supra. Yeah.
You're not going to protect the plastic from corroding, because it's plastic. But it actually adheres fine. Why don't we put half of it on a wheels car, so we can see which half. That's the IGO half.
So we can have a giggle like that. So kill me. I can't believe you're not here, Halleles. It's missing out.
I know, I know, immigration, what I'm leaving you in Australia. Well, maybe that's what it is. Maybe it's your first time here. What do you think of Selimab?
You had a good look yet? I know it's a day when I was a day when I was a day when. Because we've been really busy at the standard. I'm going to say, just in America, there's like 6,000 detailers that already use our job, let alone the people who are not using it.
So it's been just a flood of people. But we've been setting up and a little bit busy here. H has been the most popular thing we're talking about, because as a car detailer, you're just, you know, we're luxury, right? So you're working really hard for that $2,000 sale.
Yeah. But if you can get a government contract, like I was talking to one guy earlier, who's coating every single police car, fire truck, and ambulance. I think he mentioned he was near New York, sunshine auto, or something or another. And he's just got hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of contracts from these products.
So all these detailers and other people are coming in saying, you know, if we can get this into Rio Tinto or mining company, here's a contract that I owe with millions of dollars, because imagine how much it costs to replace a machine that's failed due to corrosion or service it. Yeah, extending the light of it, which means it's saving money the long run. Absolutely. That's right.
So I haven't had the chance to explore Seema, and I want to, but Vegas, so I haven't been to Vegas before. More. Where did you come in? Came Sunday.
I see you've got a couple days. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Man, I don't think I can get sick of it. That's only one street, but it's a big place.
It's a very interesting place, especially in Halloween. Yeah, and it's a little way that's right. And everything that looks like it's close? No.
You keep walking, it's a big place. It's a massive place. It's a massive, massive place. So you're coming next year?
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Hang on, Keel.
Keel's been asking me to come here for a long time. And this time around, he basically said to me, I'll make it work your while to come. But he ruined me. No, no, the problem is, it's on my AK wedding anniversary.
And Seema is like this every year. Sorry, baby, but you're not going to be seeing me find a person. And is your boss here? No.
No, it's a work trip. P That's it. I told you about us about next year. And they say, Oh, it's going to be the same for you.
Yes. It's going to be the same for you. Keep taking me out every night. He'll be back.
You'll be back. You'll be back. You'll be back. You'll have to get married again in a week like a week earlier.
Elvissie can marry you. That's it. Yeah. You're going to be very married.
You're going to be bringing your vows. Yeah. That's it. Yeah.
That's it. Good idea. Thank you. Problem fixed.
Problem fixed. Every recording this, and it's my idea. She would have got bored from the phone. I say that my wife doesn't listen to me.
I'm glad you're here. Took her four days to relose. So she's just... Well, there you have it.
That's the IGL booth. Everyone is busy working. No time to play. Just busy, but no.
I'm glad you're enjoying the show. I'm going to see you again next year. That's okay. It's okay.
It's okay on come to Australia. Not yet. I'm trying to get other people to relax. When you come on the show, we'll talk nice and relaxed.
But yeah. You're going to have to come to Australia and come back to Vegas. Have you been talking to people and letting them know you're from Australia today? They can tell from the accent.
You know what? I've had about 12 people. I've been...I see Australia is very dangerous. I think we have snakes and spiders in the city on the street.
Yeah, everywhere. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. You know, you know, you're going to have to come to Australia and come back to Vegas. Have you been talking to people and letting them know you're from Australia today?
They can tell from the accent. You know what? I've had about 12 people so far. I've been...I see Australia is very dangerous.
I think we have snakes and spiders in the city on the street. Everywhere. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
You know, you know, you know, check your shoes. Before you put them on key on. I have a few Australian in terms of the Chinese. Yeah.
Just so you know. Actually, I glove. I love this. So, wait a second.
No, no. No. Awesome. Thank you.
I would love the game. My doing the show. Thank you. Thank you.
Good show. Thank you. Have a good show. Thank you.
Thank you. And makes sure to figure you'll get a go. Thank you. Maybe something said.
