In 1 Samuel 4:1–22, Israel goes into battle against the Philistines and suffers a devastating defeat. Instead of asking what has gone wrong in their relationship with God, they bring the Ark of the Covenant into battle, believing that having the symbol of God's presence with them will guarantee victory. But God cannot be reduced to a formula, ritual, or good-luck charm. Pastor David Maestas explores what happens when we want God's blessing without obedience, God's protection without surrender, and God's presence without a genuine relationship with Him.
