Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt alienated by the pressure to practice “self-care!” (We know we have). And today as Mother’s Day approaches, we’re chatting about the trouble with many self-care practices and giving our own definitions to this popular term. As parents of kids with disabilities, most of us already feel like we’re at max capacity, so how can we schedule in a yoga session or weekly date night? We can’t just leave our kids with any babysitter and take off for the evening. Don’t worry, we’re not just ranting about our (failed) self-care practices in this episode.. we’re talking about actual ways to nurture ourselves (starting by admitting our limitations as humans), + our thoughts leading up to Mother’s Day. We’re holding the weight of the holiday for anyone who has experienced grief and complications related to it. Plus, Heather is giving a sneak peak into The Lucky Few Foundation’s Storytelling Tour! Head to theluckyfewfoundation.org to learn more and get involved. Whatever your definition of self-care is, and however you’re celebrating Mother’s Day, we see you, we appreciate you, and we are cheering you on! -- SHOW NOTES Get involved with The Lucky Few Foundation’s Storytelling Tour! The Secret of Kite Hill Bradley Charbonneau Do you know every nook and cranny of your neighborhood? How about UNDER your neighborhood?Do you let your kids walk home from school? It's just a few blocks, right? What lurks in the shadows? In the bushes? Or scarier yet, under the bushes? Or is it all just happy-go-lucky Huckleberry Finn and exploring and adventuring in your own neighborhood? When do you know the difference? Maybe your kids know. Maybe they don't. How will you learn? It began as a simple walk home, the same one we did every day after school. But our dog's ball went into something of a hole, or was it a cave? Maybe a tunnel. But are there tunnels in the city? The ball was pretty close to the entrance, but just far enough to be a little spooky. Should we just forget it? WARNING TO PARENTS: there are some questionable parenting decisions in this book. It is not intended as a parenting handbook. There's a fine line between making the right decision and making the fun decision. When to choose which? How much do yo DCOM and Drink Gloria Smith and Austin Helmers Hello Friends! Welcome to DCOM and Drink! We will also be covering some of the lesser known DCOMs like "You Lucky Dog" and "Horse Sense". Let's celebrate (or cringe!) as we take on this fun, erratic journey! Who knows, you might even find a new DCOM you will fall in love with! Common Ground: Stories from America's Vintage Movie Theaters Gary Hardcastle In 2016, I started driving two-lane roads through small towns all over the United States, looking for vintage movie theaters: movie theaters with just one or two screens, usually built somewhere between 1920 and 1960, and usually in dusty downtowns or rundown suburbs.Eight years later, I’ve documented over two hundred such movie theaters. Some thriving, some abandoned, most just hanging in there. I stop, I take a few pictures, and, if I’m lucky, I hear a story from someone about what that theater means to them, and what that theater means to their town.Join me as I visit eight vintage American movie theaters and share their stories—stories about everything from childhood matinees and bad dates, to cult movies and concession stands.
