Rick goes to me, why don't we interview people and I go, fuck, can we fight? You're the one that was all excited. Well, I do, I leave you with a mic. What the fuck is that?
It's a cow. What the fuck? I'm out of standing, I fucking cabin, you're standing for a star. You're fucking yucky.
I'm out of pretend it was my birthday look. You did it. I saw the baby. Oh, no, I saw the baby.
Oh, no, I saw the baby. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I was going to root my nephew. Oh, Jesus.
Because he's a hyperphobia man. How did you guys stay in fish with you? No, we stayed at Bloody QT. We've never fucking buffed my breakfast, you believe it?
So, yeah, just get bacon on toast. No, no, I'm very, hey, hey, we winched about that by breakfast. Let me add it all up and it wasn't bad at the end. And I discovered avocado on hash brown with poached eggs.
Good morning, good afternoon. Good evening, listening to the old talk car podcast. Breakfast time hosted by Penaranez, joining me, he's a little Miss Narfa, and the roving reporter. Good day.
We're not live from some of that, so we're going to debrief from some of that. All three of us went and we're in different parts. Directions to our sum of that. It was organized chaos.
It was fucking chaos. I put on Instagram. It's the first time that I've seen the house full sign go up. We've never been there with it says no more tickets.
That's just the polling organization. You're in? No, no, no. It's never been that bad.
No, listen, what happened was everyone's saying it's overcrowded and all that. It wasn't. He reached his capacity to pass it on the venue. I'm sure.
You know what Friday morning? We got there? So we had bought out tickets on one couple weeks back? So he's a part of it.
We got there Friday morning and there was a queue. There was only one girl doing the wristband. No, no. They didn't have enough wristbands.
Oh, let's go. How the fuck can you not have enough wristbands? You know how many tickets you sold. All right, let's go back to step.
So, Sumonats is an annual event in Canberra. Traditionally, it used to be a new year's event and it got out of control. It was 20, 15 years ago. And they switched it to the first sort of weekend in the new year.
So it starts on a Thursday, wraps up sort of Sunday morning. Saturday is the big day. But scrutiny rings open Thursday Friday. So you did the scrutiny process and you've done it in the past half.
So basically, you can't just turn up and drive in. So months in advance, so the Sumonats website will open up. I'm sure if you just go to a Sumonats. Entries will solve that.
Look, it's over the years that keeps on changing. And apparently this year they've already solved 30% already. So if I want to take my car to Sumonats next year, 20, 30 seconds now. 20, 24.
Yes, January 47. And I've got you already looked it up. So I'll go online and I obviously tick the box where I want to bring my car in. Do I write down what car it is you paid additional fee.
You nominate and you register each driver. So one driver. But if you want two drivers for the one car, you register the car twice. Because there were certain cars with two stickers on there.
I had two entry numbers that I've had for years. And they go to me, I wanted to nominate another driver and they go to me, no you can't. Can we store cars with two stickers on there? Yeah, well, I tried to bring in two cars with one name.
I don't know. You know what? Yes, you can. So what's your number?
What number did you get? I always get them every year, 66 or 67. No, no, no, no. They let this year, every shitbox in.
No, no, no. Okay, we'll get to that. No, no, no. There were some shitboxes.
So we'll get to that. So basically, I've now registered. I don't see how Suzuki mighty boy. But I had a V8 in it.
No, not the red one. I don't know. There's this little red one. Stock was a rock mighty boy, just had a big exhaust on it.
Okay, so I've registered. How is that? An entrant. Okay, so I've registered the car.
Let's get to that. So do I put down what make a model it is and what it is? Okay, so now fast forward. We're literally on the Thursday off Sunday.
That's all the Friday. Hang on, you're still before you've entered. You've got to get a letter saying they accept your entry. Okay, so if I put in Ford Focus GL 1.3.
You're not going to get in. So they're going to check what car it is. You put V in, club rego. You're getting in.
Okay, you know once I went there, what is it? The VK, the wrong one. No, part of the collection. This is the bloody black one.
Oh, yeah. I was going to get to that. So basically let me in. So it's a horse power show.
So anything with a V8? No, no, no, no. It's not. It's either supposed to be like classic muscle.
Straight machine. Straight machine. There's supposed to be a degree of straight machine. Look, every year it changes some way.
The only thing that I could see wrong with this year was non-love security. Okay. Yeah, well, that's all the same. All the same.
Your car is now accepted. Your car is now accepted. Your car is now accepted. Your car is now accepted.
Guys, it's following the M5. Let's follow the program. There's a lot of people that have been there before. So now, fast forward to Thursday Friday, we've tickled the boxes, we turn up.
And then they nominate a time. And then they're screwed in here. So you drive through like an outdoor warehouse. Your car getting towed in or driven in?
Okay, well, okay. So I can drive it in, it's registered. Okay, you're going to separate. What are they looking for?
Is this safety? Is it sleep builds? Here we go again. This year, they looked at nothing.
They looked at nothing. Every other year, they've looked under the bonnet. Check things. Check brake lights, check.
And that's been there first. And I didn't get to screw it. I didn't get to screw it. I didn't get to screw it.
I didn't get to screw it. I didn't get to screw it. I didn't get to screw it. I didn't get to screw it.
I didn't get to screw it. So when you took the W427, which is a muscle car, it's a really car. to make such an event, you got knocked back. I drove in there that day with that car, and this chick screaming up and saying, oh, knock back 20 of these today.
I'm gonna know you have it knocked back at this particular car. I have, I go look, this car is nothing like the car. They just think it was a standard V8 Commodore with a V8 in it. But they don't know they asked him, they're all back.
And then you went back and then you came with the Australian I drove back. No, no, no, no, no, no. I drove back to Sydney, asked them what time they closed, put my family in the hotel, flew back to Sydney, rang up your brother, said to him, get the V8 in, group A, you ready? Have it full of petrol, I can't have it.
I'm out of the dash and I keep going. And he was waiting for me at the server, I think that's a breezeby. I jumped that drive back. So first of all, to this year, the cars that I saw was just a mishmash.
Like there was a car, it was just a frame. That was nice, I like that. They were trying to reverse it. They could sort of saw off someone's leg.
No, that was, come on. You have it was different. The cars that I couldn't understand in there, did you see the C63s? Yeah.
I don't know. That's what I mean, they let every man in their doggy. Yeah, but can I say another thing? Things have changed, they're making it into a business.
The reason why you're seeing at least the stickers now have to be peeled off the cars very easily before they used to peel off a little bit of pieces. They've come off, you know, you couldn't reuse it. Things have changed this year. Like the security was a big issue.
Stickers, chicken. So basically the way Simon has to set up, and I think we've described it in a couple of podcasts again. So effectively it's in the exhibition park in Canberra. It's like a Centennial park.
It's like there's a road that goes. It's a one lane each way, like a, it's a two way. It's a two way little road is if you're going to look for a picnic spot, right? And it does a circular route.
Yeah, three Ks, how big you reckon, how? Two to three Ks in the circular route. It's a perimeter of of of of. It goes around the camping ground around the.
Yeah, the perimeter of the exhibition park in the middle. There's a horse trotting track and a stage that got concerts, big theaters. Yeah. So it's a big area.
And then the crowds line up behind concrete barriers. And literally, and you never had before as well. And you egg people on and they do little burnouts, but you've got your kind of like burnout area. But lastly, I think you could wait up the half an hour to just turn it down.
And it's become I think it's post COVID that they've let people get a bit wild. But then what happened? You were there towards the end. How?
So you go around, you do your circuit. One, there were too many cars this year. Like there was almost like a traffic jam for half a lap. Yeah, but again, that's because of the people stopping doing burnouts and stuff.
I can't give you a round. That's why they introduced a couple years ago, that burnout strip. It took just to let out the. Yeah, but still the so many people there.
They put it on alcohol and car. When you start selling alcohol at nine AM? They're selling alcohol, right? Yeah, but they went on the entry to summon that inside, right?
Every other year except for this year, they'll open your boot, they'll check everything. This year they didn't do that at all. Why I'm booming a car? It's like you're going to go off.
You're going to go off. Yeah, but if you look at what's causing the issues, one, they've got barricades and crossings everywhere. So you're stopping. So every whatever 100 meters.
That's fair enough. I understand too. The crowd, like them stopping the traffic, what's the longest thing to do? What are you going to do?
I don't ask, like, you can't. You need that. But now, like... I've been going since the early 90s.
Wait, wait, wait, wait. Let me say this to you. Wait, wait, wait. Let me say this question.
Every year there's problems and every year it just grows bigger and bigger. You know what's going on? The book is growing. The book is growing.
No, it's not. It's going for more family oriented. 20 years ago, it would be driving around. Shall I?
It's getting started. You know what I mean? That was happening. You just didn't stay with me.
I didn't notice there's a lot more family. It was a lot more young people. But the bookhead element, they're jumping the barriers to get people to egg them on to do burnout. They're pushing people down.
They've got a mullet competition. They've got really big, big competition. They've got the mullet competition. Yeah, but they've got the mullet competition.
So you've got that element there. That's part of the street machine culture. You can't change that. No, it's not a weird suit.
I don't want someone to bring their hands off. One guy nearly had his. There was a guy with a supercharged Commodore. He's got the wind over him.
Yeah, he's got that. Now, if that guy didn't have his foot on the brake, that's going to go to the crowd. I've got an intercity talking. I've been watching all the shows and all that.
That was bad. Now, top, you go back 10 years or 20 years? No, no one would have that. Remember the right we used to have a new year's eve?
No one would have someone else's car. I've got to admit that. That's true, Pete. Nice to take up the 67 Mustang.
Mate, it was like I used to part the seat. No one ever touched a car. No one touched a car. It's only the last couple of years, like, especially post-COVID.
Did you see when they were doing Bernie? Actually, on the other side of the wall. Yeah, they pushed it. Yeah, but that was the help of them.
Yeah, that was the help of them. That was the end of the order. Actually getting one of touching people's cars. No, that's the end of the road.
That guy doesn't have his foot on the brake. That was wrong. That was really bad. Yeah, that was wrong or bad.
But the only way is to move their barricades further out. I don't know, look, they didn't have enough security. I think it's a bad thing. I know something else.
On the back section, we used to get a bit of a run. There were cameras and every interval. But there was no security. If you see, not on the radio and they'll kick people out.
But you're still, look, we're all wogs and skips. We don't understand cameras yet. We need to see someone standing in the middle and tell me to get out. Yeah, get out.
More security standing there. And what's happened is security was your mate, right? So you could do a little burnout up where the dyno cell is and everyone is there. You could do a little burnout, bag yourself, keep moving on, security didn't fail.
Now you do it, they radio in, you're out. Yeah, because of getting out of hand, they can see it. Look, but you know, hey, all the people, all of us take that little bit and make it a shitload more. And I think, anyway, you know what, if it was, look, we're all complaining about it, really.
But the fucking thing was massive. It was massive. Look, we're already saying about wanting to go next year. And it's already 30%.
And I wrote out to Adrian and Ada, thank you for the passes and the access to most of the area. I think they're probably having a will and break. I asked for some statistics and I didn't get it back. I'm like, I just wanted to know any cars, but then how many people in there?
I just emailed them for my numbers yesterday. I just wanted to be tired. I just want them to be. I just want them to be a bit tougher on the cars that enter.
But some of those cars were just there for one reason. You hear different stories too, but I. Yeah, I agree, Hal. I think the cars, okay, another example was standing there in the key electric car came round, the key EV6.
What the fuck is a key electric car? Some of those support cars, you know, who's car around all that? They get those car at wheels, wheels, Australia, because I saw a post. You know, remember, like I said, the stickers now come off in one piece.
Look, they were not checking, driving in. I caught onto that straightaway, right? If one of our cars got like broke down like I did last year, I would have just taken the stickers off of one piece. And we would have driven in none of the problem.
Yeah. Every year, whoever came on the Saturday, right, we'll try smuggling them in the car. And usually you'd just get a while, but this year, we could have had a car full of people who were driven in. All right, let's talk about some of the events.
Come on, man. How was that? It didn't even have a V8, nothing. I just, you were just like that, I made it.
Okay, this is one of the changes. Yeah, well done. Basically, right. Events.
I know you went to the drifting. That is fucking news. That's news. That's news.
It was their last year there, too. We went, actually, this is where Rick got pissed off with me. We should have interviewed the people because you gave me the money. Yeah, we talked to one of the fathers of the Sun doing it.
And we ended up watching him do it. Yeah. Fucking sensational. Because that was a tight course.
And they were like bumping up. That is. It's almost like a dance. But one was going to hit the concrete wall.
It took a bit wide. And all you see him do is just not. Just exhilarated. The wheels must have been like a couple of times.
And he stopped. Just to get a little bit more off the wall. Yeah. And you know, he didn't make they are putting it on the wall.
They are. It was a big turn out. Like a big support. I don't think many people understand it or know it's there.
Like I don't know. I'll tell you what, you can get a drift in there. You can do it. Like line up to get one in there.
The line was like, I'm going to do it next year. Yeah, there was a queue. You could do it. I want to do it.
Was that free or you had to pay? No, I didn't care. I saw a queue and I put it up and you could jump in and get drifted. That's what happened.
Yeah, you did. That's right. I don't know. Because every time they come and you know, you're like a passenger.
But I'll tell you now. Mate, that is sensational. I'm talking to the old man, but they've gone through, you know, do it. Mate, it is great.
And they will drive Japanese, like, 2006. Yeah, one half. That was super. One half.
All that stuff. And then there was a couple of LS motors in some of them. There was a holding new there. We're an LS, whatever motor in it.
But like Rick said, it seemed like it was awkward. I don't know what it was. But it was mad. I want to do it.
Yeah. I really do. It was good. So getting to the best part of something else.
Grand Champion, portion of the line. Yes. So you went to the great one. So that's the show and show.
So now more controversy now. So we walked in on Friday. Explained to the audience. That's a show and show.
No, no, no, no. This is the... Which is the competition. This is the...
So Grand Champion is basically a combination of judging for the build and the quality of it. But you've also got to tick all the boxes with the driving events. Yes. So you can't just trailer your car down there, putting the show...
No, it's a show quick. And it's the best car there, but you can't drive it. You can't drive it. So you need to...
So this is obviously the build. That's right. So you know, all those cars are brilliant. Yeah.
Did all those cars go in and drive events? No. No. I'll tell you now, I don't think half 50% of those sort of extractors...
No, they did. No, the statesmen were to judge it in late. Because he didn't go in any driving events. Okay, that understands.
He couldn't win anything. So really, when I finished my Mustang, I've got a chance of winning because I'll go in everything. That's right. So basically, there was a 70s, 911.
Hang on, can you drive? I'll do it by phone. I'll do it by phone. You can tell me which way it's over.
I'll do it by phone. You can tell me which way it's over. So this is the course. Yeah.
It's the course. By the time he finishes it, you'll be able to retrofit the Tesla driver. No, it's getting done. No, it's getting done.
Okay. So basically, this Porsche was not a bolt. Okay. And I walked into the pavilion and I walked past this car first because it was near the front.
And I walked past that. And even I just stopped there and I looked at it and I turned to my mate and said, this is the best car at the summer. It's really... I'm really glad with that.
No, you know what? Because I looked at the little things and I picked up straight away. He had the two piece wheels that he had made with forged centers that were basically copies of the 21 inch versions on the GT2 RS. To say the other cars or the other cars?
Like cars that Simmons on them. And we just... We've added them in right off. I'm trying these cars on your car.
These guys running Michelin cars. They're like little things. A little van. I think you look too good.
I did. I'm trying these cars. That pavilion was the usual cars that have been there for ever in a day. They painted the brake calipers different.
They've done these. They've got different things. They've got unveiling now. Yeah.
Look, they're not taking anything away from the builds were great. As grand champion, he did all the driving events. So he deserves the win. He doesn't matter if it was a Porsche or a Lambo.
What did you do? Porsche. So it was a six of a... Twinkly under us.
I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it.
I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it.
I'm not sharing it. Look, the social media is being a leader. I feel like when it skates one. Yeah.
Yeah. But yeah. It's going to... You know what?
In their defense of a lot of the people, they've told all these bull fiends where they go. They said, wait. So we need to understand this before Nick's Hero, Pete. Let's have a go at it.
We'll need to have a look at it. Yeah, let's have a look at it. Yeah, it'll look the part. We can kill it.
I don't care where we put it. We can drive it. Can you drive? Yeah.
But maybe we can drive it? Oh, drive? We should take it to it. Oh.
It's everything. Ross can't drive. Ross can do the marketing. So you'll tell them, we'll have a chance, even though it's like a...
Right. Grand champion is not having the best showcard in. Grand champion is everything. It's a combination.
If you can't get the car off the jacks. car off the jacks. You can't start it and drive it and drive it out and do a lap and do the super cruise right and do the driving events and pull on the dirt and get it dirty you're not me. They're not afraid to do that.
They must do it. Alright let's do it. But then you had the bullfeds who decided that they do burnouts outside the nuts. They do burnouts down the main street on Northbourne Avenue.
So I don't want to say something because everyone will know but I'll do it anyway. Apparently when you go to skit, uh, screw it nearing you can get the where the restaurants are, whatever the past. Yeah yeah yeah. But that's separate there was no carnage there.
That was alright. No, no, but to go into it. Yeah, you have to have a separate pass. So you just have to run it when you get through it.
So yeah, so Brennan had no chaos from the members. But whatever was the cops got called because the crowd started getting a bit roundy to many people. But cops got called and one of the cops that re-rendered another cop car. Shit.
Where's your stuff at the? There was um, but he was a little cops waiting outside. And Paul, Mary, Paul, Mary actually put the phone post the phone online and said, yeah, because there was um a couple of cars that got kicked out and then they decided to do burnouts out the door up to the lights. He goes, he goes, if only there was a place for these guys to go in and do this kind of stuff without getting in trouble.
It's got sarcasm. It's got sarcasm. Thanks guys. Yeah.
You've got kicked out and then you're not you're ripping hellies in front of the AP. Another event that I didn't go there, it was the burnout ring and that's huge impact and the colour tyres was big. You see a lot of colour tyres but you want to see people coming out and they smell. I mean, I smell a rubber on the other side for a couple of hours.
Thumbs up. You went on the, yeah man. Thumbs up with all the headaches man. It's terrific.
There's no other event in the world and shadow out to Zack from the smoking tyre. When I split them in November when I was in the States, they're hanging to come to some of that. It is one of, it is another thing that I've always said, imagine if Topguit came to some of that. Imagine Jeremy Clarkson, they have fun, it would be seeing them go crazy.
You know, I think they do a show once and mention it. I don't know but some of that is well famous. It's one of those unique things. There's not a place in the world that you can get away with what you can do in a safe, closed environment burnouts and the crowd just being literally centimetres away from the car.
I was thinking the other day, what could you do to match that? Could you do one in Queens then? Could you know what? You can't.
You can't. We're going to do it in Centennial Park. It's too big. Yeah but, no, Canberra's just one of them.
We're going to do Boston's annual park and that's what we're going to do. Okay so if you move that from Canberra, we'll go on. You can't. They try to drink COVID.
They're claiming to me and they don't get involved. The whole idea of someone that is, everyone's leaving it. Everyone's leaving it. Everyone leaves.
Yeah. Fucking their Sydney Brisbane Melbourne. It's pretty central. Where's Australia?
That's the way I'm a career. No one, if you do that in Sydney, no fucking Sydney once again. There's more to expect them to go on. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it's the whole thing. The whole thing, it's not central. You want to say central. It's still a high.
It's close to the city. It's close to the city. It's pretty this way. Wherever you go in Canberra, you're in Canberra.
Canberra's not going to let people. They have to sit in to say you do it at City Motor Park. But there's nothing around it. You can't go anywhere.
But it's a movie motor show. It's not static. You're not seeing cars behind ropes. The cars are driving.
The venues are here. But the problem is really the only place you can do it is Homebush. No. No, no, no more.
But that's not going to happen because there's too many people leaving in the car. Well, they're not. Yeah, you can't. So you can't have it at City Motor Park.
But the simple reason it's in the middle of Bumfuck. Yeah. And they won't leave. So they will know they have power crews, right?
Which is basically burnout from day round the track. Yeah. But there's nowhere for people to go. There's nowhere for people to go and have dinner.
It's not like only Canberra where three minutes down the road, you've got swanky restaurants and bars. Yeah. Right. So it's not leaving Canberra.
It brings too much to their economy. Whenever politicians will say blah, blah, blah, the winders will say blah, blah, blah. But at the end of the day, every business in the immediate area made a killing on the way to it. But we're not saying it's going to move from camera.
No, no, no, no, no. You can't compare. And recently when I went to Seema, I stayed for the Seema crews. And it was nothing like what they were doing in Canberra.
There's no burnouts. Like literally the cars are on stands for four days. Literally just drove out into an area where I could see them outside. There was no burnouts.
I mean, there was a few cars revving, but nothing like all day for three days and at night driving in the local can. Look, it's for the, like, like, everyone's whinging about something, but everyone wants to get there next year already. Yeah. Look, it's not the matter.
All the rubbish, everything you hear, it all it does is add to the hype. And that's the hype. And I was happy to see the cell, the sold outside that there was a lot of people then. It was just young people.
And that's good for the future of motoring cars and these type of cars that are highly modified and highly full of horsepower. By the way, I haven't seen so many VLs in my life. Oh, Kallos. Yeah.
Oh, VLs for you. You couldn't do any more till VL. It's already been done. Yeah, it's common with now.
There's no more older cars are getting to the. Yeah, you can see many H's or I think it's a couple of wagons. I'd say, you know, there's not even a rat right. But the VN's.
Hey, hey, hey, I'm just remember VR Commodore's now on Claprijoe. Yeah, yeah, yeah, 93. Yeah, yeah, we're getting it. So if you've got a VR, right, you're on Claprijoe for the January.
I put this way. It was good. Hey, how quick does a merchandise get sold out? I went there to get a T-shirt for my son.
No, he was really good. No, go on Friday lunch time. Yeah, good to go. Did you notice they had from every other, they had this table?
Yeah, which was good. And I don't know, it was like a magic table because I never get the saw or get refilled, but it was always getting refilled. Yeah. It was like magic, you know, we got down to a couple shirts and all of a sudden, did you think a hundred more go on there?
But they're every other year. You know what, I'm just talking. I'm just the actual, the exhibitors in the pavilions that used to be truckers and have a exhibit. And you had, you know, you had proper exhibitors.
I was thinking online. No, not just that. There was probably too expensive to retie. Look, we don't know that.
We're just not saying that. No, no, no, no. We don't know that. But you know what I mean?
We're crossing every year. Do you want to say the guy with a mic over his knife showing you how to cut up? No, no, no. No, no.
No, no. No, no. No, proper exhibitors that had automotive stuff there. Yeah, it's good.
Was there? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. They've got the guy there selling, you know, T-shirts like with the car part, like all the car, the chisels in the show. You know what I mean?
You know, he used to be there. He had the yellow T-shirts that made a one. The old school retro stuff. Well, it was a couple of those, but not old.
Yeah. It was a business like the, what did you call them? The prevalence, there was a shit load less. Yeah.
There was a lot less. Yeah. And the ones that were there took up more real estate for the civil race being obviously less. They took up.
Yeah, that's right. But there was a lot less. But thumbs up for me. I really got off on the fact that there was a lot of people, but I'd rather have it growing than getting worse.
You made me do three laps around the thing and I'd only do one in the park. I've done three for years. And look at my arm now. It's it's it's on 10 on one.
So I look like a driver trucker. And like we said earlier, I left the mic with Tom and I'm going to play a few of his little clips after this podcast. You can hear the sounds. You can hear some of that loud and alive.
And it was unfortunate that we couldn't find some of the cars that were going to go in. And it was just mayhem. It was just too busy. We'll have to spend more time.
We'll actually look what we've done. Yeah. Like I said, it's hard to do one day. So that was my mistake.
But hey, next year, you already know about actually. So let's leave the politics aside. So coming up road trip. I'm off to Melbourne for a couple of days in the Tesla.
So four days. We'll see. We'll see. We'll see.
I'm taking the mic down. I'm going to meet up with a few friends down there and probably do some podcasts. One too. I've got a road trip to where you're going when I invited you to.
Yes. Security wants to buy a V8 Cortina. So not the man that was looking for an escort. I mean escort.
Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. It is an escort.
What's the bug? Escort. So there was an escort for the man looking for an escort. It's a V8.
I'd rather him get an RS 2000. But he wants to get this. What's a V8? Escort.
Are we taking that to some of that next year as well? We probably will then. But anyway, we want to go up and say. How do you rally a V8?
