Thanks for tuning to Subs, what's radio, with me, Ryan, and Mr. Buckville, Will Hickey. Hey, how's it going? And we've got another Skate Companion, a few guys.
This is a video from Carhartt, skateboarding, and it's called Precious. So we thought we'd give a little skate companion. But the time you listened to this, it might be a while ago, but we did it a couple of days after it was released. So it's just the way it goes out.
Fourteen minutes and 27 seconds long, so nothing too crazy. Yeah. It's an easy one to go with, right? Oh, yeah.
Well, it came out on YouTube on the 31st of January, 2024, directed by Paris-based filmmaker, released on the 31st of January, 2024. It's got 79,000 views, mate. So it's still all right. It's still all right.
Yeah, for only being out for a few days. So we might as well get straight into it. If you haven't listened to a skate companion before, we have the video in front of us lined up on YouTube. We've got it.
So if you've got YouTube, Carhartt, skateboarding, Precious, you should be able to find it. Countdown three, two, one, and then press play. Listen along to us. You can have it playing along with us.
It doesn't really matter. Does it work with this? It's up to you. But you're just going to get our take on it.
A little bit of commentary and see our first reactions to the video. So we'll go three, two, one, press. All together. So three, two, one, press.
And we're going. Lovely. So it's probably going to be a little bit artier. Don't you think, mate?
It's going to have a little bit more substance than just pure skateboarding. But that's not always a bad thing. Carhartt, work and progress logo comes up. Straight in with a beautiful kicklet, mate.
Yeah. I mean, it's probably got more of a Travis Rice snowboarding video to it than the true skate video. But I like it. I like it.
I like it. Sound of travel sounds. That's good. Got some nice line in here, mate.
Finish off with a nose blunt. I say finish it off. You haven't finished yet. It's not good.
It's stuck the backside flip. I've been intrigued. I've been intrigued to see what it's like, mate, because it's always different when you get those companies like a dickies. Yeah.
Heart. Even Volcom. Even Volcom can, you know, they've got a different take on the skate video. Yeah, definitely.
We have seen this spot a few times, and we, you know, that have all kind of banks allege. Been in a couple of hockey videos and FA videos. Been in a lot. Like a New Yorkie sort.
That's like a switch. Yeah. Switch will ride to kind of those grind pop out. Yeah.
Look to me there anyway. Oh! Oh! Impossible to nose lines.
With an expectant. 180 out or pivot out. Very quick. Expectant that, mate.
Been enjoying it. Come on, give us a little background sound to skateboard and as well, mate. Exactly, mate. And the voiceover as well is a nice touch.
Yeah. Again, it is like, you know, a quick silver video or something like that where they just, they've got a different angle, but I like it. Yeah. It doesn't give us the names.
What are your thoughts on that, mate? I mean, I suppose in this style. Yeah, you have to go big, do you? You could just have a little caption in the bottom right and corner.
Just nice, nice camera work there though. Yeah. Proper fishing at Fibo. He's getting a nice and close to the camera there.
Yeah. I mean, I suppose with Carhart, they're not a skateboard company. They're not a shoe company. So they are selling the lifestyle of wearing some Carhart jacket or Carhart hoodie or whatever.
Yeah. You know, oh, mate, that rolling. Yeah, no, thank you. Yeah, exactly.
It's a really cool shot, see me. Yeah. Obviously, it's a slower approach to a lot of skate videos, but it's still really cool. Really good filmmaking.
Almost in a static spot like that. Max Palma chilling on the banks. I like some of the static shots. And just the side B roll.
Well, it just gets you closer into it. You can feel the textures and the substance of a spot. I haven't seen the spot in a while. He's went up it.
No. You did go up it. There he is. Yeah, Jack of Grady.
Max Palma. Backtail slide. Little pop out there. Oh, backside flip out of that 50 on that.
Come down. Got some really interesting spots. I really like the vibe mate. Yeah, really nice spots.
Yeah. You know, I suppose it's still got like the advert influence, you know, because again, these promotional videos are adverts. Yes. They really are.
That's what all skate videos are. But they're put together nicely. Oh, beautiful. Yeah, I'm going to say again, really, really nice choices.
Farts from these guys. Yeah. And great, you know, double angles mate. Really cool long-length shots.
Static long-length shots, which I like. I really show enough the actual street and the street skating here. So. It's just nice seeing a video that's different.
Yeah. You're seeing things from a different angle. It's almost trying to, you know, get your sensors going. Feel what the skates are feeling when they turn up to these spots.
That's it. It's really. The sound. Really setting the environment of this raw street.
And the soundtrack's awesome mate. Yeah. I'm really digging it. And the B-roll is really, really good.
Yeah. Nice. Blum, blum, blum. Right there mate.
That is lovely. Up and down. Mm. Yes.
Slappy front, right on. Yeah. Yeah. Big time power slide.
Nice. No better cross there. Yeah. The pace of the edit is really, really good.
It's just, it's. Spent up a little bit. It's choppy at our areas. Yeah.
Exactly. Choppy, sped up. Oh, I know. The, the using slow motor right places.
No, it's a big gap. And the spose, a good thing about like a car heart video mate is that you don't necessarily, you're not going to give it all your technical shit because you don't need to. No. You give it the, the biggest stuff that you can kind of visually appreciate, but you don't have to get, you know, you don't have to deep dive into the levels of skateboarding that you'd expect from a core skateboarding company.
100%. I was kind of worried that it was going to be washed out with a load of simple tricks and a load of background bricks. Yeah. But, uh, no, they've done it just right.
They're giving you enough simple tricks and enough visually nice tricks to get hooked in. Yeah. Because they could just slow mo a load of kick flips mate. Yeah.
You know, and, and if they do cool, they kick flips a nice trick to see in slow mo, but they, you know, they're doing some, they're showing, Ollie's and something like that, which is still cool. I like that. Yeah. It's a skateboarder.
It's good to see. And a lot of that, that, that trick. Harder to skate kind of outside the box streets, that street, street, street saying. Here we go.
Nice. Really cool spot. Just backing them back up your centre mate. Really interesting bank, you know, two flat banks across the, with a stair set between the two.
Yeah, nice. Getting track choices. It's, you know, it's more, it's more kind of mainstream, but it's, it still works for me. And I'm, I'm a, and I, it makes you feel something.
Yeah. For a good skate video, you want couple genres in there mate. Lovely. We've had some cool good celebrities in this one.
Mm. And just a lot of handling business spots and tricks mate. Yeah. You know, nothing super, super crazy, but just getting, you know, I mean, that's crazy.
You can fucking mean that backslope 50-50. That drop off. Oh, the big cover. It's scarier and scarier as you go down.
And yeah, some of it, like you said, some of these tricks aren't unattainable, you know, some of them you could see yourself doing, some of them definitely not, which is nice, it's relatable. And keeping a theme going with the voiceover, just coming in again mate, you know, just keep just keeping it in its own kind of lane. Oh yeah. The video is still, still keeping its gimmick true throughout the whole thing.
Nice. 39 for that. And backing up the edit again mate, really like it. Yeah.
Really, really like it. It's, it is a bit mash, but it's pretty polished. The filming is fucking on point. So you can kind of get away with it hugely.
Now like, like saying, we've got enough double angles to really appreciate some of these weird spots in a nice way. Nice. Nice big eye leg over the bumptabar. The thing is somebody spots mate, you're not going to be doing a backslope over those bumptabars.
No, they're too big. You're going to be killing yourself. Yeah. Oh, that tray was huge.
Oh, yes. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no.
Yeah, I think it's no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no mate. Oh, oh, oh. Possible, no, no, that was lovely. Possible, no, as many.
From bigs. Nice. Quick feet. Yeah, just cheeky little touches.
Nice. So good. So good. No, it's like, no, it's like to crook to don't even want to call on that.
Suppose no is wrong. Take your nose grind. Yeah. Nice little Ollie.
Ollie up in there. Yeah, it's just, it's just using the space, using the kind of landscapes and just keeping, keeping a vibe going. Does it remind me of like a surfy video? Yeah, it kind of does, but you've got to appreciate it for what it's given you.
Yes. It's not, it's not giving you this, you know, it's not part to it. It's not full part to me. No.
So it's a, it's a crew hitting spots. So it's a, it's a good vibe video. Yeah. And I really kind of feel like some of these tricks, they're just doing Christmas spots there as well.
Like the, you've got the slappy curves with the drops or things like that. And I feel like a lot of those you don't really think about doing those tricks and just turn up. And if you know, sometimes whatever presents itself happens, which is cool. There we go.
Precious is up. That was it, mate. That was it. That was it.
Really enjoyable. Really, really enjoyable. It's hardly hard to get a separate for. It's a different type of video, but I think it's like a kind of solid three sort of thing.
Yeah. Audio, visual experience. It works. I feel the same thing.
Yeah. 100%. I was just going to say some of the names they got in the feature in here. So in the order they've got them in, they've got, notice Agales, Ewing, Ayla, Ayla, Guy Azale, Tanner, Brinsky, Taylor, Caruso, Eddie, Cernicki, Enzo, Camasi, Rob, Mac, man.
They got some good names, they make. Noah, Mae, Jackie, Michael, Jacko, Grady, Josh, Powell, Max, Paul, Riley, Pavey, Ibo, San Yang, Brian, Sedlick, Willow, Fernandez, Tuyo, Ory, Ory, Andrew Wilson, and Brett Weinstein. Good job. Good job, guys.
Really nicely done. Haven't really heard of many of the names in there. We're going to be completely honest. Yes.
It's obviously a couple of everyone knows, but really cool. The tunes, awesome. The edit was perfect. I was really impressed with it, mate.
Yeah. Because it could have got it really wrong. And it's a hard one for a non-skateboarding, you know, just as a fashion wear brand or a work wear brand, stepping out into something like skateboarding. It's a bit of a niche.
It's going to be a hard thing to fulfill, not being a core skate brand. They did a really good job. One of the things, kind of like you're saying earlier, really nice background shots of the spots in the B-roll, you know, when you skate street and you go and you skate the same sort of street or a new street, you go out, you're in a different city you've never been before. Your eyes kind of highlight all these little things you see out the window when you turn up out of the bus or the train or your car, wherever, walking around.
You see all these little hints of the street. I kind of felt that from here. It kind of almost felt like I was at some of the spots. Really cool.
Which I think that's definitely what the main guy, Joaquin Bale, his name is, directed and edited by. That was an Angelo Marquis as well, cinematographer. So people are taking this seriously, mate. It's a project with multiple people, with visions of making this look.
You know, you've got camera operator, Romaine, Batard, Trevideir, Ryan Metz. I mean, they put a written by, I suppose they would have put little storyboards together, mate, to really kind of just get a vibe, get a feeling through it. Like I said, repeat myself, I'm really impressed with this. Yeah, it is.
It's a lot of these videos can, you can get these, you know, even globe back in the day, you know, could put out some, they could vidsmate and everything, but they kind of almost lose the heart of skateboarding. They kind of, it's, but it is lifestyle. Yes. It is lifestyle.
And I think the older you get, the more videos you watch, you do have to appreciate what it is. Of course. It's not the same. It's not the same as a core video.
The same as things like, like, we are blood. Yep. Like I mentioned before, all the Travis, Travis, Ryan, Snowboard videos, they are lifestyle. They're, they're a bit, they kind of grab me as a skateboarder into a snowboarding universe, but I'm not really, you know, catching all the, all the street snowboard videos, you know, you're not in the culture.
You know, I'm a skater who likes a snowboard, but classifying yourself as a snowboarder is a different kind of fish, right? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. No, really impressive was a, not, not sure where this was going to go, but a sweet video.
And yeah, like trying to step back and think of it from a cloven street where, work where brand, you can't put it down as an average, generally as an average, skate sort of skate laid out video that was, yeah, top marks, what they did, I think that was really good. Definitely worth a watch. For 15 minutes, sit down, put something on, just to create a little vibe, you know, if you're, if you're a new skater as well, something that can just, not everything has to be kind of all guns blazing. They were wrong.
I grew up with the shotgun edit, watching zero, hammer, hammer. This is just a different take on it. This is trying to, even the spots look like they would in real life, because you see a lot of spots, you know, you've probably seen it made, especially that, that, that bank spot that you skated in Calgary. Yep.
Like, I've seen that spot from, you know, foot you've sent me, if you, if you touch it, but I don't know what that spot looks like. The lens on your iPhone or the lens that, you know, like a fish that you mostly see it. It's hard to tell. Yeah.
You saw on those banks, you know, they're kind of an establishing shot of the, that spot that Max Palmer was lying down on. You can almost see those banks were a lot bigger and a lot sketchy. Yes. It looks, you know, it looks when it, if someone was just doing a, you know, just doing a couple of tricks down and roll down it.
So it just, I really like it for that. It just brings you a little bit closer to the actual, what it's like, the space that you're in. Yeah, definitely. And sometimes you sometimes have a double angle of a certain spot from the totally opposite side or whatever really lays it out of the run up, the landing, how big, how small it looks sort of thing.
But they did a really good, really good way of showing the spots they were in. Nice. Well, should we leave it there, mate? Yeah, I don't think I've got anything else to say.
That was really good. Yeah. Well, don't go and check out Carhartt Whip on YouTube. They have released a few videos.
So, and it does seem like, I mean, this one said, yeah, directed by Paris space filmmaker Joaquin Bail, precious builds on Carhartt's, Carhartt Whip's last fall-like video. Which is released in 2022. So, I don't know if it's probably the same guy or the same kind of production team that kind of just getting this, you know, just getting a vibe going. This is storming at this floor.
Skateboarding in the United States, situating the team riders amidst the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles and New York's sleepless phrenic streets. I mean, yeah, that's a little bit wordy, a little bit too. I was so nice. I'm going to be clean on this there.
That was a bit, which I mean, they could have just said a vibe of New York and in LA. Trying a little bit too out there, but yeah, definitely worth a watch. Yeah, 100%. Right.
Well, we'll leave it there. Thank you very much for listening. We'll bring you some more skate companions soon. If there's something out there that you want us to touch on, hold on, you may be doing a little nostalgia.
You want me to talk about some old videos as well? Oh, yeah. Something that listens to one of here. Just let us know and we'll get on it.
But yeah, thank you very much for listening. And we'll see you next time. Bye, guys.
