If you’re going through a big career transition, think of your next position as a transitional and perhaps temporary job. The first, voluntary package is always better than the non-voluntary package. Everything is negotiable–you may or may not get what you’re trying to negotiate but there’s nothing wrong with asking. As soon as you are no longer employed, apply for unemployment.
