17.01.25 Grocery Wars: Aldi's London Takeover, Amazon Ditches Own-Brand, & Lidl's Kid-Friendly Packaging Makeover

from Latest Deals Podcast · host Latest Deals

This podcast discusses recent changes in the UK grocery market, focusing on the expansion of Aldi, changes at Amazon Fresh, and Lidl's new packaging initiative. • Aldi: Aldi is planning to open nine new stores in London and invest £55 million in the M25 area in 2025. The supermarket aims to eventually open 100 new stores in London, creating approximately 3,500 jobs. Aldi will also be upgrading existing locations in the M25, including expanding its Colindale store. The company's managing director emphasizes their commitment to providing high-quality food at low prices, particularly in London where many shoppers still lack convenient access to Aldi stores. • Amazon Fresh: Amazon has replaced its own-label ready meal range, ByAmazon, with Morrisons' The Best products in both its physical Amazon Fresh stores and online platform. While Amazon Fresh saw growth in the ByAmazon range in the past year, particularly during the Christmas season, a senior retail advisor suggests that ready meals are not typically purchased for online delivery, making it difficult to justify an own-label offering. Amazon currently has 21 physical stores in the UK, primarily located in London, with one store in Sevenoaks, Kent. • Morrisons: Amazon's switch to Morrisons' The Best ready meals builds upon a 2016 supply agreement between the two companies that allowed Morrisons products to be sold on Amazon.co.uk. • Lidl: Lidl is removing all packaging designs considered attractive to children from its own-brand products deemed less healthy by mid-2025. This initiative will eliminate design elements such as cartoon characters, bright colors, 3D shapes, and playful names that do not reflect the actual food items. Lidl's chief commercial officer highlights their commitment to supporting healthier choices for families. The company aims to align with the EAT Lancet Planetary Health Diet by 2050 to promote a healthier and more sustainable future.
