17 - How Backup Plans are Blocking Your Business Growth

from Mom Boss Freedom Podcast · host Paige Figueroa

Send us Fan MailWhat if your backup plans aren’t actually about being “responsible”… but about not fully trusting yourself yet?In today’s episode, I’m unpacking a quote that’s been sitting with me lately — from none other than Elle Woods: “I don’t need backups. I’m going to Harvard.”At first, it’s funny. But when you really sit with it, it opens up a powerful conversation about self-trust, nervous system safety, and the hidden ways ambitious mom business owners build escape hatches instead of committing fully to what they want. We’re talking about:Why backup plans often come from anxiety — not logicHow self-doubt can show up as over-planning, pivoting too quickly, or second-guessingThe very real financial and relational pressures that make trusting yourself feel unsafeHow “responsible” choices can quietly pull you away from alignmentAnd what it actually looks like to shift into Elle Woods energy — grounded, regulated, and committedThis episode is an invitation to unclench, slow down, and have an honest safety conversation with yourself about how you're showing up for yourself as a business owner. Not about hustling harder — but about redirecting your energy towards the version of you who knows she can sustain the success she wants. If you’ve been distracting, preparing backup plans, or wondering why you can’t fully commit to your main vision yet, this one’s for you.And...here are some of the reflection questions I toss at you inside of the episode so that you can reference them for your own contemplation and journaling:Step 1 - Reconnecting to the vision of who you're becoming: How do you feel in your body when this is normal for you? Where do you feel grounded? Where do you feel expanded? What are the physical sensations that come up for you?Step 2 - Notice the triggers:  What external triggers tend to kick up self-doubt for me? How can you begin to lessen the impact of those triggers?Step 3 -  Investigate why those triggers exist and if they're the ultimate truth: What feels scary about actually having the thing I want? Is it visibility? Outgrowing old versions of myself? Being the one others look to? Letting it be easier than I was taught it should be? Are these real, present-moment fears or imagined future ones?Step 4 - Be honest about your backups: How much of your time and energy is currently going toward backup plans? Side paths? Things that feel productive but aren’t actually aligned with your main vision?Final reflection - What’s one thing you would do differently today if you knew — without a doubt — that your main plan was going to work out for you? How would you show up? What would you stop overthinking about? What would you commit to more fully? Get access to the Success Recalibration Ritual here!
