from The Lawyers Talk · host BLawyers Vietnam
Host Hello, dear listeners, welcome back to the Lawyers Talk channel from BLawyers Vietnam. I am Dang Thi Kim Chau, and I am pleased to meet everyone again on today’s Podcast episode. Today, we will discuss the key regulations concerning rooftop solar power systems in Vietnam, with a particular focus on systems operating under the self-production and self-consumption mechanism. Accompanying us today is Ms. Huynh Ngoc Uyen Chi. Ms. Chi will share with us insights into the relevant legal frameworks as well as practical advice drawn from her experience in supporting and advising clients in the renewable energy sector. Guest Hello listeners of The Lawyers Talk. I hope that sharing information within the scope of today’s topic we can help listeners have an overview of Vietnamese regulations on rooftop solar power projects. Listeners then can make decisions when installing rooftop solar power systems that best suit their needs. Host I have heard that rooftop solar power in Vietnam is currently one of the projects attracting a lot of interest, especially from foreign investors. To kick off today’s podcast, could you explain to our listeners what a rooftop solar power system is according to Vietnamese law? Guest To give a brief overview, a rooftop solar power system uses solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity. These photovoltaic panels are installed on the rooftops of buildings and have a capacity of no more than 1 MW. They can be connected directly or indirectly to the grid of the Vietnam Electricity Corporation. Host So, does that mean a rooftop solar power system must be connected to the national grid of the Vietnam Electricity Corporation? Guest Not necessarily. Whether to connect to the national grid depends on the system owner’s decision. The main difference is that if connected to the grid, the owner can use electricity from the national grid when the solar system cannot supply power and can sell excess electricity back to the grid. If not connected, the system needs to have storage batteries to use when solar power is not available. Thus, the owner can choose whether or not to connect to the national grid.
