#170 10-minute JAPANESE A Starter Pack sample episode

from jENI NO PIKA PIKA NIHONGO 日本語

Hello. Welcome to Jenni's Shiny Japanese. It's April and it's still cold in Japan today, so we need heaters. But thanks to that, the cherry blossoms will last longer and we will be able to appreciate them for a longer period of time. Now, there was an article about Kabuki in today's newspaper, so I will introduce a little about Kabuki from there. Kabuki is one of Japan's representative traditional performing arts, and I think many people outside of Japan know about it, but I don't know much about the details. According to the article, Kabuki started in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1624. The Edo shogunate, which ruled Japan at the time, forbade women to perform in kabuki, so there were no women in kabuki. Female roles are played by women known as onnagata. Also, in kabuki, there is some kind of red or blue pattern on the face, and you might buy a picture of it as a souvenir from Japan, but that pattern is called kumadori, and that is used to show what kind of person is playing that role. The red kumadori represents youth, justice, power, and fury, while the blue represents an evil or vengeful spirit that plans to take over the country despite its noble status, and the brown represents a specter disguised as a human. Did you know this? I did not know until today. Well, today's episode is a good night with a sample episode from the audiobook.
