#173. Cherry blossoms at Meguro River

from jENI NO PIKA PIKA NIHONGO 日本語

Hello. Welcome to Jenni's Pika Pika Japanese. In spring, Japan is all about cherry blossoms. The Meguro River is one of the most beautiful places to see cherry blossoms in full bloom, and it is truly beautiful to see the tunnel of cherry blossoms over the river from the bridge. The cherry blossoms in full bloom are really beautiful when viewed from the bridge, and the cherry blossoms lit up in the evening are just as enchanting as those in the daytime. And just this time of year, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and falling, the petals of the blossoms cover the surface of the river, creating a pink carpet. This scene is called "hananakida" (flower raft), which is also a very emotional Japanese term. The word "hanaradek" is said to be derived from the sight of scattered cherry petals floating on the surface of the water and flowing in a chain, resembling a raft. The Meguro River was called "Koritori River" in the Edo period (1603-1867). The word "kori" refers to the act of bathing in cold water when praying to the gods and Buddha, and it is said that this river was so called because people would cleanse themselves in this river before paying homage to Meguro Fudo. 花筏 はないかだ flower raft 川面 かわも surface of the river 垢離 こり 身を清める みをきよめる cleanse oneself 詣でる もうでる make a pilgrimage こんにちは。
